Unmaiye Un Vilai Enna? (lit.'Truth, what is your price?')[1] is a 1976 Tamil-language satirical film written and directed by Cho Ramaswamy. It is based on his stage play of the same name. Cho also stars, alongside R. Muthuraman, Padmapriya and S. A. Ashokan.

Plot

A priest is convinced that a youngster, who confessed to having committed a murder to save a victim of attempted rape, is innocent. All his attempts mobilise public opinion are thwarted and his witnesses turn hostile as corruption rules the day.[2]

Production

Unmaiye Un Vilai Enna? was a popular play staged by Cho Ramaswamy through his Viveka Fine Arts Club.[7][8] The play, which also starred R. Neelakantan,[9] was critically acclaimed,[10] and Cho adapted it into a film under the same name, serving as director, writer and even as actor.[3] The film adaptation was produced by D.A.B. and Rana under Mohind Movies.[11][12] Cinematography was handled by Sampath, and the editing by E. V. Shanmugham.[11]

Themes

According to the 1983 book Cinema as Medium of Communication in Tamil Nadu by C. R. W. David, the point of Unmaiye Un Vilai Enna? is to illustrate that "Movies have sharpened God-consciousness by emphasizing the neighbour-consciousness."[13]

Soundtrack

The soundtrack of the film was composed by M. S. Viswanathan.[14] The song "Ethanai Maandharuku" was sung by him and written by Vaali.[15]

Unmaiye Un Vilai Enna? was released on 30 April 1976.[5]
