The special train is likely to be fixed as a scheduled weekend special train, say railway sources. The development follows the completion by Southern Railway’s construction wing of gauge conversion on the 45km Sengottai-Punalur section in the 

Western Ghats

in January.

The line provides a shorter route to Trivandrum via Kollam, say railway officials. The other route is from Coimbatore/Pollachi to Palakkad and from Madurai via Kanyakumari. Railway sources say they encountered difficulties as the area is a dense forest and was infested with snakes and other fauna, making it difficult for workers to proceed...

The Tambaram Kollam Express (06027/06028), is a tri-weekly train that runs between Tambaram Railway Station and Kollam Junction Railway Station, India.

History

Quilon-Madras rail line was the first line in Travancore, opened on 1st June 1904. The official gauge conversion of this line started in 1998 and the works completed in 2018. On 31st March of 2018, the entire Kollam–Sengottai line thrown open for passenger train services.[1][2][3] The first passenger train on the stretch was Tambaram-Kollam-Tambaram special train service(06027/28) and completed the service by earning Rs 3.15 lakh as passenger ticket collection from its 879 passengers against a capacity of 712.[4]

The line provides a shorter route to Thiruvananthapuram via Kollam. The other routes are from Coimbatore & Pollachi to Palakkad and from Madurai via Kanyakumari. [5]
