So, naturalists observe, a flea
Hath smaller fleas that on him prey;
And these have smaller still to bit 'em;
And so proceed ad infinitum.
Thus every poet, in his kind,
Is bit by him that comes behind.

Thank you

I've seen how much you hate paid editors, and continuously making an effort to stop them, I really grateful to have you here on English Wikipedia :D .--AldNonUcallin?☎ 15:43, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Aldnonymous: Thanks for noticing! It's always good to get positive feedback. I will correct you, however, I don't hate paid editors, rather it is paid editing that is hateful. It is tearing down a wonderful structure that has been built up by many volunteers, that provides good information to whoever has access to the internet. If that information is poisoned, and people can't trust us, then the whole structure may collapse.
Your post reminded me of a news story from a couple of decades ago. After the fall of the Soviet Union people started cutting down and selling copper cable from high power electrical transmission systems (nominally still in use). I don't hate those folks who cut down the cable - they were doing what they had to do to survive. I did hate the fact that the transmission systems were being destroyed. It just seemed like there must be a pretty simple enforcement system that would stop the destruction. Everybody likely knew who was buying the cable - these folks could be stopped fairly simply if anybody took the obvious steps. Similarly, most people likely knew who was cutting the cable or where to look to stop folks from cutting more. So the system was messed up, but the parts of the system that led to the destruction of the cable could easily be fixed. The actual folks who cut the cable, in my mind, were less responsible than the authorities who couldn't be bothered to take a few minimal steps. That's my reading in any case.
Thanks again.

That was insightful, I'm the one who should thanking you (again :D), and... You're welcome.--AldNonUcallin?☎ 19:54, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week, for integrity and valiance in the fight against paid editing. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Coretheapple submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Smallbones as Editor of the Week for the integrity that he brings to the project, and for his yeoman work - unsung, unrecognized, unappreciated - fighting to preserve Wikipedia from encroachments by paid editors. He has been an editor for more than eight and a half years, and during that time has edited a staggering 11,337 articles at last count. He is not an administrator, heaven only knows why (too much sense?), but a content contributor par excellence, with in excess of 31,000 edits, 65% of them in article space. He is a generalist's generalist, with his top contributions ranging from Bernard Madoff to Media, Pennsylvania. But his prodigious talents as a contributor are not the only assets he brings to the project. No one has fought longer and more valiantly against paid editing. It is a great pleasure to nominate Smallbones for Editor of the Week.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Hey Smallbones, just wanted to express my thanks as well for both for your contributions and your engagement with others on broader ideas with Wikipedia that I've seen on Jimbo's talk page and other spots. I often find it difficult to jump into those conversations myself, but I do read them, and I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I, JethroBT drop me a line 02:02, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any plans to go to back to Hazleton anytime soon? If so, may I suggest some photo request ideas? WhisperToMe (talk) 21:58, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@WhisperToMe: I've got a ton of other things to do in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, but Hazelton looks pretty well covered. Look in Commons, esp. in the Postcards category. Banc De Binary

Can you please tell me why you're insisting on retaining unverified claims on the page?--Tianderni (talk) 16:52, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Banc de Binary is prohibited from advertising in the US by the SEC. Please don't mess with it. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:55, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes they are and it is on the article. But Banc de Binary is not banned in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand so why you are keeping this fact. Can you please give a reliable source? Then I will add it back myself. --Tianderni (talk) 17:00, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Done (diff). Johnuniq (talk) 00:41, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know how to do this?

I'm trying to revert Evergreen Cemetery (Adams County, Pennsylvania) back to its original name, Evergreen Cemetery (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania). (Technically, the original name was Evergreen Cemetery (Gettysburg, PA).) The directions say an administrator must do the move. Please take a look at the article and see if you agree. Thanks, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 15:57, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your efforts. The article on Evergreen Cemetery and the one on its gatehouse seem to go to strange lengths to downplay their connections to Gettysburg. To me, Evergreen Cemetery (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania) is a FAR more useful name for the average user, even if the cemetery technically is outside the borough. I didn't find the Articles for Deletion discussion until after I left you the message.
I may be heading to Gettysburg next weekend. My nephew -- a sophomore at Penn -- wants to borrow a car to go to Gettysburg. If I tag along, I'll try to get photos of the last 20-or-so monuments that need images.

Congratulations. "Clearly a very dodgy company" sounds like another editor I know ... but not credited ... - Bri (talk) 19:12, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Bri: I'm not entirely sure where the interviewer got that, probably the talk page at Jimbo Wales which I mentioned to her as background material. I did notice a couple of times she quoted others uncredited. Maybe @Nagle: as well. 3 points:
  • I'm sure the Times of Israel knows the proper fair use standards in Israel.
  • If that was you being quoted - I think you got some extra mileage beyond want you expected when you wrote it.
  • Thanks, just thanks. If there is anything I can do to give proper credit, please just let me know.

I thought at first it was a certain British admin, but it turned out not to be (you're right, Jimbo talk Archive 164). However, they did quote me elsewhere w/o credit: "...badly polluted by promotional editors..." Zigzig20s I briefly looked at the two nominations and the nom photos. I won't have a chance to do a thorough reading until Monday, but it looks to me like 2 buildings in a similar style (but 1 without a tower) at the same address, but with different coordinates! And similar names. Something has to give. If you are in the neighborhood, visiting in person would probably help. I'll try looking at Google street view now. BTW something very similar happened on the Sitka, Alaska list yesterday. Smallbones(smalltalk) 19:44, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
They are next door to each other with Ravennaside and its tower viewable on Google Street view. From the Ravennaside nom. "Ravennaside was built- , by Mrs. Byrnes' parents, Anna Metealfe Fleming..and James S. Fleming,

on land acquired by Anna's father in 1884 (Adams Co., Miss., Deed Book 22:9). The site adjoins the property of Ravenna (ca. 1837), home of the Metealfe family since 1857. Roane, eldest child of Anna and James, was twelve in 1902 when her family moved from Ravenna into their new house, Ravennaside. " Smallbones(smalltalk) 20:09, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The milieus and proposals are individually closed, so the full closure could be done by other team volunteers. However, I see that you've archived the whole discussion into Wikipedia talk:Conflict of interest/Archive 27. May you please explain why? Thanks. --George Ho (talk) 21:48, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oh... I see you asked, which the proposer okay-ed the archiving. --George Ho (talk) 21:57, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think about this response from Meta-wiki? Would this persuade you into un-archiving it? --George Ho (talk) 12:28, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Before you archived, I put the "do not archive until" comment to prevent the bot archiving. Therefore, I would have awaited Primefac, S Marshall, and KrakatoaKatie's teamwork closure after doing separate closures. Do you believe that WMF would likely reject the consensus after all this? --George Ho (talk) 12:43, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind the request for joint teamwork closure. Maybe another RfC in the future? ;) --George Ho (talk) 13:28, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I explained why key closures by us "non-admins" were done, and then pinged you and Casliber. You can explain there if you want. --George Ho (talk) 13:10, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't seem like one person is still happy with the archiving. --George Ho (talk) 19:42, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Cover of the book "Rise of the Rocket Girls, The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars" (2016) by Dr. Nathalia Holt.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Cover of the book "Rise of the Rocket Girls, The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars" (2016) by Dr. Nathalia Holt.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:07, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

AfD:Supersymmetric theory of stochastic dynamics

Vasilii Tiorkin (talk) 20:38, 28 June 2017 (UTC) Hello, thank you for your comment on "Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Supersymmetric theory of stochastic dynamics" where you suggested to move the discussion to a talk page. Allow me to ask you a few questions to clarify your suggestion. Which talk page did you mean, the wikipage's talk page or the corresponding AfD project's talk page ? Should we remove the AfD notice box on top of the wikipage ? Also, your interpretation that "there are enough references in the physics literature, but this is written for mathematicians so is more like original research " is accurate, though with a subtle correction. The page/theory is written by physicists and for physicists. The previous version, however, did not have enough references on earlier papers so that a mathematician flagged it for deletion. This mistake, however, is corrected and now the page has all the references on the history of the theory.[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Cover of the book "Rise of the Rocket Girls, The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars" (2016) by Dr. Nathalia Holt.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Cover of the book "Rise of the Rocket Girls, The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars" (2016) by Dr. Nathalia Holt.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:54, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to dispute the speedy deletion nomination, then follow the instructions in the template and use Template:di-replaceable fair use disputed. Moreover, you assertion that the book is discussed in detail seems incorrect; the book is mentioned by name a single time in Nathalia Holt#Works. The link to the external media site is not really sufficient per WP:NFCCP. In addition, as mentioned in WP:NFC#cite_note-3, it's not the book, but the cover art itself which needs to be the subject of discussion. If you can add discusion of this cover to the article (perhaps citing the external media as a reliable source), then this might possibly be considered NFCCP compliant. An alternative would be to create a stand-alone article for the book itself if you feel it meets WP:NBOOK. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:16, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much

Quite a thrill to see that POST-ed. Almost as if the SUN was shining. Ahahahahaha...ha...hahaha...ha.

Hi. In 2012 you uploaded File:Baltimore Parker Metal.JPG and added it to Parker Metal Decoration Company Plant. A few days ago an IP added a paragraph to the article in this edit, claiming it's not the right building. Content disputes can hold up article development and make editing difficult for editors. Gouyoku (talk) 22:08, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

FXCM

Absolutely not. The introduction is supposed to be a broad summary of the article, and the banner at the top is eminently deserved: the article needs to be written from secondary sources, not primary sources like news reports. I don't remember discussing your professional background before (whether on-wiki, by email, or face-to-face), but I don't see how that's relevant to the issue of the page presenting a grossly newsy style rather than being an encyclopedia article with equal weight on all periods of the organisation's history. Nyttend (talk) 00:40, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

PS, I'm not going to bother editing the article again. I wasn't aware that this was the subject of conflict, and I've learnt not to wade into situations where people are insistent on writing a hit piece with primary sources. Nyttend (talk) 00:41, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Understood, but where are the secondary sources? Remember that you're writing history here, so following the historical definition of secondary sources is just as critical as following the medical definition of secondary sources when writing about medicine. Nyttend (talk) 00:53, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
PS, your You don't want to help these guys rip off more customers, do you is profoundly troubling: this is an encyclopedia, not a place to right great wrongs. Nyttend (talk) 00:55, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please educate yourself on the definition of a primary source in history: it's one written at the time of an event, in the context of that event (or a later-compiled record such as an oral history that presents a participant's perspective), while a secondary source is written later based on primary sources. Can you find me Ph.D. dissertations in history, or JAH or AHR articles, that include news reports in their literature reviews, for example? Instead, you'll find plenty of Ph.D. dissertations in history and articles in those journals that rely on news reports as primary sources. The idea of a news report being a secondary source for the event in question is an idea that departs significantly from the prevailing views or mainstream views in its particular field, and it needs to be treated thus. Formal mediation has been requested

The Mediation Committee has received a request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to "FXCM". As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by 2 August 2017.

Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page. Thank you.

Request for mediation accepted

The request for formal mediation of the dispute concerning FXCM, in which you were listed as a party, has been accepted by the Mediation Committee. The case will be assigned to an active mediator within two weeks, and mediation proceedings should begin shortly thereafter. Proceedings will begin at the case information page, Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/FXCM, so please add this to your watchlist. Formal mediation is governed by the Mediation Committee and its Policy. The Policy, and especially the first two sections of the "Mediation" section, should be read if you have never participated in formal mediation. For a short guide to accepted cases, see the "Accepted requests" section of the Guide to formal mediation. You may also want to familiarise yourself with the internal Procedures of the Committee.

FTC

Hi Smallbones, I was reading this FTC document recently: "Native Advertising: A Guide for Businesses", Federal Trade Commission, December 2015.

In its discussion of native advertising, it seems to describe perfectly the problem we experience. Native advertising, according to the WP article, is "a type of advertising, mostly online, that matches the form and function of the platform upon which it appears".

The FTC says: "[A]n ad is deceptive if it promotes the benefits and attributes of goods and services, but is not readily identifiable to consumers as an ad. Thus, as the Policy Statement explains, the FTC will find an ad's format deceptive if the ad materially misleads consumers about its commercial nature, including through an express or implied misrepresentation that it comes from a party other than the sponsoring advertiser."

One I objected to not long ago was Whistle (company). This purports to be an article about a new company, a subsidiary of Mars Petcare. In fact, the article is an example of native advertising of the company's sole product, a pet tracker. Someone cleaned it up a bit recently, but earlier versions (e.g. [2]) focused even more on the product. When I last checked, the sources were articles by reporters who had been sent pet trackers by the company to test. So the company created the sources, then paid someone to create an article based on those sources—an article purportedly about a company but in fact about a product.

I recall that you were in touch with the FTC years ago. Did anything useful come of that, and what do you think about approaching them again with some examples? SarahSV (talk) 20:38, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dennis Hastert

I have undone an edit in regard to Dennis Hastert in the category of prisoners and detainees of the United States government. Hastert has served his time and it would appear he no longer fits the category as he is no longer a prisoner and or detainee of the US government. I can understand why he would be listed in the category at the time of incarceration. However, now that he is no longer imprisoned he does not seem to fit the parameter. Happy New Year to you. Scams

It seems as if there is now some overlap in our efforts. It wasn't my intention, but after seeing the early thread on Wales' tp today, I started the one on mine. Wales' tp is a place I watch occasionally when an interesting ES pops upon my watchlist, but I very rarely comment there. It has its use, but IMO is basically WP's soap, and Jimmy himself, understandably, only chimes in occasionally. Anyway, what I mean to say is that today's discussions are a clear example of why a dedicated workgroup is required that can bring all the talk into one place, and possibly James' suggestion, which got consensus, for a special functionary group to deal with these issues should now begin to be physically put together. I don't mind the groundwork being on the user sub page I created this morning, but I don't really want to be again in the vanguard of an important campaign. WT:RFA

Hey Smallbones. Looking back at the discussion on WT:RFA regarding the fourth question, I'm not happy with how I presented my argument. I didn't mean to reference the moral panics as an attack on your work; my intent was to show that, while some proposals have been good, others seem more directed at the people than the underlying problem of subtle promotional edits being made. It was a poor wording choice to make, and so I apologize for that. If I participate in future discussions on the topic, I'll try to find more constructive ways of getting my point across. Regardless of my views on the subject, I respect the work you've put into trying to develop policy solutions for the issue of paid editing. Apology

I'm sorry for having a go at you the other day. I was feeling a bit under the weather.

Lourdes pretty much got my intent correctly - in a climate where we're struggling to recruit admin candidates, we need as few obstacles as we can get. It is possible to do good work on WP for pay (eg: adding sources for all unreferenced BLPs is something that just isn't going to happen voluntarily), just that most of what we currently call "paid editing" is simply bad paid editing and lumping all of it together means the type of grunt-work I'd like to see isn't going to happen. The way it is now, I think the uninformed, and most users will be ill informed, may think this is all the lynching victims there were. Until it is expanded as discussed, I feel strongly that the “incomplete” tag should remain, and have restored it. "Routine awards"

Hey there, given your edits to the Revelator Coffee article, could you possibly elaborate on the term "routine award"? In the section you removed were two rankings in which locations of theirs are included, an award that is handed out annualy and a one-off honorable mention, wherefore I cannot quite see how they all fit the same category. Also, the reliable sources that were used to source the reception section are still present in the reflist template, wherefore they display errors and should be removed from it if the section stays out of the article. You can find information about these at our welcome page which also provides further information about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. If you only meant to make test edits, please use the sandbox for that. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. The problem with your edit is that:

  • It messed the definition of a cryptocurrency: per WP:IRS, controversialness is not a condition for being a cryptocurrency.
  • The source you cited does not confirm that cryptocurrencies have to be controversial to deserve the cryptocurrency classification. Ladislav Mecir (talk) 18:45, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cut the BS. The source says that cryptocurrencies are controversial, as anybody who knows anything about them knows. We are writing encyclopedia articles, not dictionary definitions. Your POV (we can only note that something is controversial if "controversial" is part of its definition, would effectively outlaw the use of "controversial" on Wikipedia.
