Toy Story 4 is an upcoming 2019 American 3D computer-animated romantic comedy adventure film, the fourth installment in the Toy Story series, and the sequel to Toy Story 3 (2010). It is in production by Pixar Animation Studios, and will be released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is directed by Josh Cooley, and executive-produced by John Lasseter, director of Toy Story (1995) and Toy Story 2 (1999). The story was conceived by the writing team on the original Toy Story: Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich.[2] The film is set to be released on June 21, 2019, twenty years after release of Toy Story 2 (1999), in 3D and IMAX 3D.

Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Laurie Metcalf will reprise their respective roles as Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Bo Peep and Andy's Mom from the previous films, with Kristen Schaal reprising her role as Trixie from Toy Story 3. The plot will focus on Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the other toys after their former owner, Andy, gave them to a young girl, Bonnie.[3] The story will involve Woody and Buzz searching for Bo Peep, who did not appear in Toy Story 3.[4]

Premise

Woody and Buzz Lightyear set out on an epic journey to find Woody's romantic interest, Bo Peep.

In a 2010 interview, Lee Unkrich initially stated that a fourth Toy Story film was not being planned. "Well, we don't have any plans for Toy Story 4," Unkrich said. "I'm flattered that people ask about it—it reminds me how much people love the characters, but it was really important to me with this film that we not just create another sequel, that it not just be another appendage coming off of the other two." Unkrich went on to say, "there may be opportunities for Woody and Buzz in the future, but we don't have any plans for anything right now."[11] It was also reported that Hanks and Allen were signed on for a fourth Toy Story film if Pixar ever decided to produce one.[6] In a BBC interview in 2011, Hanks said that he believed Pixar was working on a sequel.[12] In February 2013, Disney denied rumors that a Toy Story 4 was in production with a 2015 release date, saying, "nothing is official."[13]

Toy Story 4 was officially announced by Disney during an investor's call on November 6, 2014.[14] John Lasseter was scheduled to return to direct, with writers including Rashida Jones and Will McCormack joining the project after Lasseter and Andrew Stanton wrote a film treatment based on a discussion among themselves, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich. Galyn Susman will produce.[15] Lasseter has stated that Pixar decided to produce the sequel because of their "pure passion" for the series.[3] He said Toy Story 4 will be a love story.[3] According to Lasseter, "Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz's story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself."[16]

In March 2015, Pixar president Jim Morris stated that the film would not be a continuation of the third film but will instead be a stand-alone sequel.[17][18] The same month, Variety revealed that Josh Cooley, the head of story on Pixar's Inside Out (2015), had been named the co-director of Toy Story 4.[19] Around the same time, Lasseter revealed that the fourth film had been such a closely held secret at Pixar that even Morris and Edwin Catmull (president of both Pixar and Disney Animation, to whom Morris reports) did not know it was being discussed until Stanton had already finished a polished treatment.[20] He also stressed that at both Pixar and Disney Animation, "[w]e do not do any sequel because we want to print money[.]"[20] According to Lasseter, both studios do sequels only if the filmmakers who created the original film are ready to tell another story in that same world.[20]

In August 2015 at the D23 Expo, Lasseter said that the film would focus on the romance between Woody and Bo Peep and the journey Woody and Buzz go on to find her.[4] In May 2016, Hanks confirmed that he had finished his first stint in dubbing for his character.[5][21]

Don Rickles was originally going to reprise his role as the voice of Mr. Potato Head; however, he died on April 6, 2017 and reports stated that he did not get the chance to record dialogue for this film before his death.[22] Two days later, Rickles' representative confirmed that he was unable to record any lines for the film.[23] In July that year, Lassetter stepped down as director, leaving Cooley as the film's sole director.[24] Lassetter explained that, between his positions as chief creative officer of Pixar, Disney Animation and DisneyToon Studios, he could not commit to directing the film.[25]

On January 18, 2018, it was announced that the film would be written by Stephany Folsom, replacing the original writers, Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who withdrew from the project in November of 2017.[26]

Release

The film was originally scheduled for theatrical release on June 16, 2017,[14] but on October 8, 2015, the release date was delayed to June 15, 2018, allowing Pixar to give the original release date to Cars 3.[27] On October 26, 2016, the film was delayed again to June 21, 2019, while the June 15, 2018 date was taken by The Incredibles 2, which was further along in production.[28] The film will also be shown in IMAX theatres.[29]
