I Don't Know How But They Found Me is an American musical duo formed in December 2016 by musician Dallon Weekes (former bassist of the American rock band Panic! at the Disco) and drummer Ryan Seaman (formerly of the American rock band Falling in Reverse). Weekes is known for being the long-time touring bassist of Panic! at the Disco, as well as his additional solo project The Brobecks. Seaman left Falling in Reverse in 2017, in which he was the drummer since 2011. Weekes established the band and acts as singer, bassist and primary lyricist of the duo; Seaman supports him on drums.[1] As evidenced by old tweets and also Weekes confirming it in interviews, the project idea had existed since 2009.[2][3]
On August 18, 2017 the band released their first single, Modern Day Cain, which hit the Top 10 Alternative Music Charts on iTunes on the day of release.[4]
On October 26, 2017 the second single, Choke, was released, reaching number 7 on the iTunes Top 10 Alternative Music Charts.[5] In February 2018, three months after its release, the song has reached over 1 million plays on Spotify and has 2.5 million views on the official lyrics video on Youtube.
The band has been interviewed by Rock Sound[6] and x96[7], revealing more information, such as a David Bowie influence in the project, and the band name origin being from a quote from the 1985 movie Back To The Future.[8]
As of February 2018 the duo has not been signed by a music label and is self-managing touring and music releases. Even though the band does not advertise itself or their music, IDK have already amassed a large fan base with over 75 thousand followers on their Instagram.
History
Weekes and Seaman are long-time friends who have worked together in the past. Seaman joined Weekes' former band the Brobecks in 2008, and has played drums for some of Weekes' solo projects including Sickly Sweet Holidays and Please Don't Jump (It's Christmas).
Weekes had been writing songs while on the road with Panic! At The Disco for several years.[9] He's stated that he never really had the time to work on them but eventually, with the help of friends, he got the chance to professionally record his songs[10]. He asked Seaman to help him out on drums, ultimately leading to Weekes inviting Seaman to join the band.[11]
Secrecy
Weekes and Seaman started playing small shows in late 2016, but kept it secret. They debuted at Emo Nite Los Angeles' 2-year anniversary event on December 6, 2016[12]; the only hint at their first show were posts on Weekes' wife's social media accounts. After the show, different sources wrote about a "new side project" by Weekes and Seaman, and confirmed the band name.[13][14]
Even when confronted with photos and videos taken at the shows Weekes and Seaman denied the whole project for months.[15] Weekes later stated that they didn't want to exploit both his and Seaman's name recognition and association with the well-known bands they played in at the time and in the past.[16]
Even though the band's existence isn't kept a secret anymore now, the duo still doesn't widely promote or advertise shows and songs.
First song releases and touring (2017–present)
IDK teased the release of their first song "Modern Day Cain" one day prior with a post on their Instagram account.[17] On August 18, 2017 the song was then self-released on iTunes and Spotify and followed up with a music video on the same day.[18][19] The single reached number 8 of the Top 10 Alternative Music Charts on iTunes on the day of release.[4]
The duo's second single "Choke" got released on October 26, 2017.[5] It was again self-published and accompanied by a lyrics video.[20] The single peaked at number 7 of the iTunes Top 100 Alternative Music Charts.
The band went on a few short tours between July and December 2017, playing shows in Utah, California and neighboring states, as well as one show in New York. They also performed as the opening act for The Aquabats[21] and Dashboard Confessional.[22]
Musical style and influences
On its website the band describes itself as "...a band out of time. One who faded away into obscurity after struggling to find success in the late 70's and early 80's."[23] The duo's music, as well as their appearance and social media presence, is strongly influenced by the style of the 1980s and can be described as synthpop.
Among others Weekes has named Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Oingo Boingo, Elvis Costello, The Ink Spots and Joe Jackson as musical influences on the band's sound.[24][25]

We knew if we going the standard route of a press release and a big announcement: "Hey come look at us,"–that there would already be a built in fan base, ready to come see. We didn't want to exploit that. We didn't want to take advantage of fans that way.

Think classic 70s Bowie, Oingo Boingo and Elvis Costello, all of which Weekes sighted as big influences while making the record.
