Normani Kordei Hamilton (born May 31, 1996)[2] is an American singer and dancer, best known as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, which was formed on the second season of The X Factor US. She was a contestant on the season 24 of Dancing with the Stars.

Early life

Normani Kordei Hamilton was born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in New Orleans to Derrick and Andrea Hamilton.[3] She has two older half sisters, Ashlee and Arielle Hamilton. She and her family relocated to Houston, Texas, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. At a young age, Kordei competed in gymnastics and beauty pageants.[4] When she was 13 years old, she recorded her first song and had a small role in HBO's Treme. As a child, she used to sing gospel music.[3]

Career

The X Factor and Fifth Harmony

Kordei auditioned on the second season of The X Factor US in 2012 with Chain of Fools by Aretha Franklin.[5] She advanced to the next round after getting all four approval yeses from the judges. It was during the second round of boot camp that led to her elimination.[6] That marked the end of Kordei's X Factor journey as a solo artist, but it wasn't until she got called, and brought back to the show and put into a group with four other girls, Ally Brooke, Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane, and Camila Cabello, who would later become Fifth Harmony.[7] At the end of the show's season, the group managed to make it to the finale and finished in third place.[8]

In October 2013, Fifth Harmony released their first EP, Better Together. Subsequently, the group released their debut album, Reflection (2015), and their second record, 7/27 (2016), which spawned singles such as "Worth It" and "Work from Home", respectively.[9] On August 2017, Fifth Harmony released their self-titled album, their first as a quartet.[10]

Solo projects

In 2015, Kordei released two dance videos, "Commas" and "Do Not Disturb" with Fifth Harmony's choreographer, Sean Bankhead.[11] As of December 2017, she has released three cover-mashups (of Rapper Drake's songs Fake Love and Sneakin', R&B Singer Solange's songs Cranes In The Sky and Don't Touch My Hair and Hip-hop and R&B singer Tory Lanez's song Say It) with the help of the producers, The Invaders.[12] Kordei confirmed that she is working on "new song ideas" with R&B singer Khalid and was featured as a cameo in his music video Young Dumb & Broke.[13][14] On October 21, it was announced via Instagram that Kordei had signed to management company and record label S10 Entertainment.[15][16]

Dancing with the Stars

Kordei competed on season 24 of Dancing with the Stars. Her partner was professional ballroom dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy.[17] The couple reached the finals, and placed third with an average score of 36.6.[18]
