Nurul Iman Mosque (Masjid Nurul Iman) is a mosque located in the corner of Jalan Imam Bonjol and Jalan Muhammad Thamrin of Padang, Indonesia. The mosque was built by the Indonesian National Armed Forces and the national government as a gesture of apology following a West Sumatran rebellion in 1960.[1]

History

In 1961, the Indonesian national army and the government planned the building of a new mosque in Padang as a gesture of reconciliation, following the suppression of a regional rebellion of West Sumatra in 1960 by the national government.[1] Construction of Nurul Iman Mosque began on September 26, 1965, during the tenure of Kaharudin Datuk Rangkayo Basa as the governor of West Sumatra. The mosque is built on an area of 1.18 hectares (2.9 acres) and was planned as a two-floor building.[2] But until 1966, the construction of this mosque has not been completed. The construction of the Nurul Iman Mosque could start again after the mosque received extra funding by the government of West Sumatra.[3]

In the evening of November 11, 1976, when the mosque was not in use, a bomb exploded from the inside of the mosque.[1] The mosque caused severe damage in the attic on the first floor and broke some of the glasses of the windows. There were no casualties in the event. Despite the closing of the mosque for investigation, on the next day, the Friday Prayer was held anyway. The culprit was named Timzar Zubil, said by the military to be a member of the Komando Jihad, an Indonesian Muslim extremist. In 1979, Timzar was captured, tried and sentenced to death penalty. Later, his sentence was changed to life imprisonment. In 1982 (while still formally in custody), he visited two churches in Medan, and the Nurul Iman mosque in Padang, and expressed his apologies for his actions. In 1999 he was released.[4]

During the tenure of the Governor of West Sumatra Zainal Bakar, the mosque was dismantled in 2004 to be rebuilt. However, until the end of Zainal Bakar's term in 2005, the process of demolition of the mosque seemed neglected. This caused disappointment among the people. The reestablishment of the new mosque can only be completed during the tenure of Gamawan Fauzi. The mosque was finally completed in 2007, the inauguration was conducted by Vice President Jusuf Kalla on July 7, 2007.[2]

Two years after it was inaugurated, the mosque was damaged again following the earthquake that struck West Sumatra on September 30, 2009. Damage in Nurul Iman Mosque was apparent in the wall panels and the ceramic floors.[3]
