Hereditary Prince Johann Leopold (Wilhelm Albert Ferdinand Victor) of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (b. Schloß Callenberg, 2 August, 1906 - d. Grein, Austria, 4 May, 1972) was the eldest son of Carl Eduard, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Princess Victoria Adelaide of Schleswig-Holstein. From his birth until his father's abdication, he was known as Hereditary Prince Johann Leopold.

Ancestry and family

His paternal grandparents were Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany and Princess Helena, Duchess of Albany. Leopold was the fourth and last son of Queen Regnant Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Johann Leopold had four younger siblings: Sibylla, Hubertus, Caroline Mathilde and Friedrich Josias.

He was heir to Saxe-Coburg and Gotha from his birth until the forced abdication of his father on 18 November, 1918. The abdication was a result of the German Revolution.

Marriage

In Dresden on 9 March, 1932, Johann married with Feodora Freiherrin von der Horst. This was considered a morganatic marriage and the Prince was forced to cede his own succession rights. They had three children, all barren of the succesion of the duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha:

  1. Caroline Mathilde Adelheid Sibylla Marianne Erika (b. Hirschberg, 5 April 1933), married on 5 December 1953 to Michael Nielsen.
  2. Ernst Leopold Eduard Wilhelm Josias (b. Hirschberg, 14 January 1935 - committed suicide at Bad Wiessee, 27 June 1996), married firstly on 4 February 1961 to Ingeborg Henig, with who had a son; this marriage was dissolved in 1963. Secondly, he married on 29 May 1963 to Gertraude Monika Pfeiffer, with who had a five children; this marriage also ended in divorce in 1985. On 20 January 1986, he married thirdly with Sabine Henning, who committed suicide with him.
  3. Peter Albert Friedrich Josias (b. Dresden, 12 June 1939), married on 12 May 1964 to Roswitha Henriette Breuer. They had two children.

Johann and Feodora were divorced on 27 February, 1962 after almost thirty years of marriage.

In Bad Reichenhall on 3 May, 1963, Johann married secondly (and again morganatic) with Maria Theresia Reindl. They had no children.
