Bilhana is a 1948 Indian Tamil-language historical drama film directed by B. N. Rao and produced by Mubarak Pictures. Based on the life of the Kashmiri poet of the same name, the film features K. R. Ramaswamy, A. R. Sakunthala, R. Balasaraswathi, ‘Pulimoottai’ Ramasami, M. Jayasree, S. M. Shaikappa, G. Sakunthala, M. Jaya and K. S. Angamuthu.[1]

Plot

A king hires the poet Bilhana to educate his daughter Yamini. To prevent any form of romance from developing between the two, he tells Yamini that Bilhana is blind, and tells Bilhana that Yamini is deformed. He hangs a curtain between the two. One day, while lessons are in progress, Bilhana is amused on seeing the full moon in the sky. He immediately starts reciting a poem, and Yamini wonders how a blind man could sing about the moon so well. She pulls down the curtain and finds that Bilhana is attractive and youthful, while he is in turn attracted by Yamini's beauty. The two fall in love and decide to marry, much to the anger of the king who sentences them to death. His friends and people revolt against his decision; he yields, and the two lovers marry.[1]

Production

The TKS Brothers adapted the story of the Kashmiri poet Bilhana twice. The first instance was for stage and second was for screen, in April 1948 under the title Bilhanan. The story was not protected by copyright; this allowed Mubarak Pictures to produce their own version of the story. Titled Bilhana, this version was directed by B. N. Rao, scripted by S. Sundarachariar and had music composed by Papanasam Sivan. The film featured K. R. Ramaswamy as the title character and A. R. Sakunthala starred as Yamini. R. Balasaraswathi, "Pulimoottai" Ramasami, M. Jayasree, S. M. Shaikappa, G. Sakunthala, M. Jaya and K. S. Angamuthu played supporting roles.[1]

Release and reception

Bilhana was released in November 1948. According to film historian Randor Guy, the film was not successful because the earlier film version by TKS Brothers was "still green in the minds of moviegoers". He did, however, say the Mubarak Pictures version would be "Remembered For: The interesting storyline, singing of Ramasami and deft direction of B.N. Rao."[1]
