Widevine DRM  is a digital rights management component of the Google Chrome web browser.[1] In 2010 Widevine Technologies was acquired by Google, now Alphabet Inc.[2]

Usage

Widevine DRM is also used with the Chromium web browser and on Android.[3] It supports MPEG-DASH and Encrypted Media Extensions.[4] Over thirty chipsets, six major desktop and mobile operating systems and various hardware devices such as Chromecast are listed as supported platforms on the Widevine web site.[5] Chrome and Firefox users can disable Widevine.[6]

Among other content providers Amazon Video and Netflix stream protected videos with Widevine encryption.[7][8] In 2016 a security issue was detected by Ben-Gurion University researchers.[9]
