The Angry Birds Movie is a 2016 American-Finnish 3D computer-animated action-adventure comedy film based on the video game series of the same name. It was directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly (in their directorial debuts),[5] produced by John Cohen and Catherine Winder,[6] and written by Jon Vitti.[7] The film was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks, and stars Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader and Peter Dinklage.[8] It is set to be released in the United States on May 20, 2016.

Plot

On Bird Island, an island inhabited by flightless birds. In the first scene, Red (Jason Sudeikis) is running through the forest, in a hurry to get somewhere with a wooden egg. Red is revealed to be a reclusive, cruel violent but grumpy red bird outcast prone to hissy fits. He is a clown whose job is to entertain newly hatched birds. After failing his latest client because of his temper, he is sent to bird court, where the honorable Judge Peckinpah (Keegan-Michael Key), who stands on another bird named Cyrus (Tony Hale) and covers him with a robe, sentences Red to anger management class. The class is taught by Matilda (Maya Rudolph), who was an angry bird herself. Among the birds in the class are Chuck (Josh Gad), a fast yellow bird who caused problems with a bird cop, Bomb (Danny McBride), a gentle black bird who tends to literally explodes whenever he gets surprised or upset, and Terence (Sean Penn), a giant red bird who only growls. The class fails to improve Red's attitude and he attacks a sign made by Chuck.

One day, while taking the class, Red and the other birds in his anger management class are informed by Stella (Kate McKinnon) that "Something's coming!" to the island, which turns out to be a large boat (which Maltida refers to as an unidentified floating object). The anchor of the boat crashes on Red's house and soon, the boat door opens up and reveals a large, overweight, bearded pig named Leonard (Bill Hader) and his smaller assistant, Ross (Hale), who say they are from Piggy Island. Leonard claims to be peaceful explorers and brings offerings of friendship. They are immediately accepted on the island and later that night, they put on a show, during which two other pigs are revealed to be on the island with them, which contradicts Leonard's earlier claim that it was only him and Ross. The pigs introduce trampolines and a giant slingshot to the birds, demonstrating it by launching fruit to the crowd Red to the beach. Red, mad at Leonard for wrecking his house with his ship's anchor rock, and suspicious of him, decides to search his boat alongside Chuck and Bomb. They find many pigs on the ship. Thinking he's got something on them, he reveals the additional pig to the birds, but Peckinpah is more concerned that he searched the boat and Leonard claims that he wanted to surprise the birds with a cowboy show with his "cousins". Red, now even more of a misfit, sulks to his house.

Eventually, the pigs adjust to society. After Red asks Leonard if he's actually and explorer, why the pigs are still on the island, and why more are coming. Peckinpah informs Red to steer clear of the pigs, refusing to believe his bad feelings about the pigs. He recruits Chuck and Bomb to help him find Mighty Eagle, a giant eagle who is said to be the protector of the island, and the only bird that can fly. After searching for a few days, they find his "Lake of Wisdom" on top of Bird Mountain. Chuck and Bomb begin to swim in the lake and drink from it, until Red drags them out when Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) emerges from his cave above (only for him to urinate in the lake to Chuck and Bomb's horror). As Red attempts to tell Mighty about his suspicions about the pigs, the Mighty Eagle is revealed to be a lazy, boastful retired bird, who hasn't flown in years, and spends his free time dancing to disco music and spying on female birds as they are bathing. Angry with Mighty, Red and his friends leave after Red sees the pigs planting TNT around the island through Mighty's binoculars and they discover that Red's suspicion of the pigs was correct as they are stealing the birds' eggs while the residents are distracted by a party. After discovering that the pigs are stealing every egg on the island, Red and Bomb attempt to retrieve the eggs while Chuck runs to alert the rest of the island's residents (who are having a party started by the pigs far from the village) about the theft-in-progress. Red and Bomb fail to stop the pigs, who leave in their boat. When the birds arrive on the beach the following morning, Peckinpah apologizes to Red for not listening to him and asks him: "What do we do now?". Seeing the depressed birds, Red rallies them to let their anger loose for once, and set sail for Piggy Island in order to retrieve the stolen eggs. The birds construct a boat from the supplies left behind by the pigs, set sail and eventually land on Piggy Island. The pigs are revealed to live in a walled city, with a giant castle in the centre. After red sees a painting of Leonard wearing a crown by the castle entrance, he realises that Leonard is the pigs' king, and that the eggs are most likely in the castle.

Using the giant slingshot, the birds attack the pigs by slinging birds (such as Hal (Anthony Padilla) and Bubbles (Ian Hecox)) at them, but fail to reach the castle. Red, Chuck, and Bomb make it to the castle, and find that the eggs are in a boiler room. The trio manage to enter when Chuck defeats the guards (in a scene reminiscent of the Quicksilver scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past[9]) Before they can save the eggs, they are picked up in a giant net. Red makes it onto the net and climbs to the egg pile while Bomb and Chuck are locked outside. "Leonard", whose real name is revealed to be King Mudbeard decides to boil Red too as he refuses to let go of the net. Chuck and Bomb manage to enter the room, and Mighty Eagle flies in (having seen the conflict from Bird Island through his binoculars and deciding to help, having felt guilty after Red had earlier told him he used to look up to him) and tries to carry the eggs out, but Leonard holds onto Red's leg when he's hanging onto the net. It starts to tear and a blue egg falls out, back into the castle. Deciding to risk his life, Red lets go of the nest to save the egg from Leonard and eventually floods the castle with the boiling liquid the pigs were using to cook the eggs. Red outsmarts Leonard and takes back the egg, leaving the King to blow up with TNT in the castle basement that the pigs had used during their heist, taking refuge in the giant overturned pot the eggs were going to be cooked in. After the explosion, the birds mourn the loss of Red, but he emerges with the egg (which has hatched, revealing three blue birds) and is hailed a hero. When approached by Mighty Eagle, the giant bird claims that he isn't really lazy and made Red, Chuck And Bomb lose faith in him to teach them to find faith in themselves (despite not remembering their names). Later, the birds appear to give Mighty Eagle all the credit for the egg rescue, Red humbly takes it in stride. However, he discovers that the birds have rebuilt his house as a sign of gratitude and Red decides that it would be better in life to be part of a community.

During the credits, it is revealed that all of the pigs have survived, who sing along to the song "I Will Survive".

In a mid-credits scene, the three blue birds use the slingshot to launch themselves out to sea.

Cast

Production

The film was made partly in response to the success of the Angry Birds Toons series which according to Rovi employee, Jami Laes, "validated" the idea of creating a feature film.[14] The first image from the film was revealed in October 2014 along with the ensemble cast, which includes Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Peter Dinklage.[8] Gad at first defclined to star in the movie, feeling it was too similar to his role in "Olaf" in Frozen but the director eventually convinced him to sign through a 30 minute "visual pitch".[15][16] The film's budget is estimated at $80 million (€75 million).[17] In addition, Rovio and Sony Entertainment will spend roughly €100 million for the marketing and distribution of the film.[17] Exact share was not disclosed, but Rovio will invest in the film over €100 million, which would make it the largest budget in the film industry in Finland, where its most expensive film was Big Game, a 2014 adventure film, made for €8.5 million.[17] Despite the massive budget, Rovio's CEO Mikael Hed stated that "it is the one that I don't ever lose any sleep over",[18] calling it "tremendously strong as a story".[18] During August 2015, Rovio announced that they were expecting to cut 250 jobs equaling 40% of the company. The only sector spared from the job cuts would be personnel working on the movie.[19]

Four months later, the official theatrical trailer for the film was again released onto YouTube[33] and was shown in theatres for screenings of Kung Fu Panda 3. Promotion

An estimated $300 million marketing effort helped promote The Angry Birds Movie, and along with its production budget, the spending has reached $400 million, making it the biggest-ever campaign for an animated Sony movie, according to executives at the company.[3] To help with the film's promotion, Rovio made a deal with The Lego Group to make a series of 6 Lego sets, scheduled for a spring 2016 release. A balloon themed after Red debuted at the 2015 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to promote the film.[35][36][37]
