One match ended with no result.[5] Their most recent meeting was back in August 2009, where match ends no result. In 2007 ICC World Twenty20, they met on 14 September, where Australia won the match by 8 wickets.

Road to the final

England

England, who had a terrible road to every world cup in both ODIs and T20Is before, started 2010 World Twenty20 in group D with West Indies and Ireland. The start of the England in the tournament was not good at all, where they lost to the hosts West Indies by 8 wickets in D/L method. In the next match against Ireland, England batted first and scored 120/8 in their 20 overs. The game for Irish looks so much easy, where rain reduced Ireland's innings to 3.3 overs, causing the match to be abandoned. This gives England to qualify Super 8s with higher net run rate. The devastated start finished after England entered to Super 8, where they were able to win all three matches against previous World Twenty20 champions Pakistan and also defeated New Zealand, and South Africa as well. This gives England top of group E. In the semi final, they met Sri Lankans, but with continuous match winning performances by Kevin Pietersen, England won the match easily and qualified for the finals.

Australia

Australia started the tournament as one of the favorites in World Twenty20 arena, where they won against Pakistan and Bangladesh to top ranked in group A. In Super 8s, they merry way continues, where Australia comfortably defeated India, Sri Lanka and West Indies to top ranked in group F. In the semi-final, Australia met Pakistan for the second time in the series. Pakistan batted first, posted a challenging total of 191 in 20 overs. Australian top order had no mercy for the Pakistani bowlers, where Michael Hussey made Australia through to the final.

Both teams were unchanged from their semi-final winning squads.
