Tulip Fever is a forthcoming film directed by Justin Chadwick and produced by Alison Owen. The screenplay, by Sir Tom Stoppard, is adapted from a novel by Deborah Moggach.[1] The production was backed by The Weinstein Company[2] and Worldview Entertainment.

Plot

Set in the Netherlands in early the 17th-century, during the period of the Tulip mania, an artist (Dane DeHaan) falls for a married young woman (Alicia Vikander) while he's commissioned to paint her portrait by her husband (Christoph Waltz). The two invest in the risky tulip market in hopes to build a future together.

Cast

Development

The film was originally planned to be made in 2004, with Jude Law and Keira Knightley as lead actors and John Madden as director. However, the production was halted as a result of changes in tax rules affecting film production in the UK.[3][4] In 2014, Alison Owen partnered with Harvey Weinstein to restart the film after re-acquiring the rights to the film from Paramount Pictures.[5] Steven Spielberg had originally offered to buy the film rights.[6] Dane DeHaan, Alicia Vikander and Christoph Waltz were cast in the lead roles of Jan Van Loos, Sophia and Cornelis Sandvoort.[1] Dame Judi Dench plays the 'Abbess of St Ursula's', who takes in orphaned children.[7] Other cast members include Holliday Grainger,[8] Jack O’Connell,[9] Cara Delevingne,[10] Matthew Morrison (who replaced first choice Harry Styles),[11] Tom Hollander,[12] Cressida Bonas (Prince Harry's ex-girlfriend)[13] and David Harewood.[14] Deborah Moggach also appears in the film, playing “Woman Smoking Clay Pipe and Drinking Glass of Beer”, when at Pinewood Studios with Cressida Bonas.[6] The crew of Tulip Fever includes cinematographer Eigil Bryld, production designer Simon Elliott, costume designer Michael O’Connor, hair and make-up designer Daniel Phillips and editor Rick Russell.[15] Tom Stoppard has adapted the screenplay for the film. Filming

Filming took place at Cobham Hall in Cobham, Kent, Norwich Cathedral,[12] Holkham (in Norfolk),[17] Tilbury, (in Essex), Kentwell Hall (in Suffolk) and at Pinewood Studios on various dates throughout June and July in 2014.[18]

Release

The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.[19] In December 2015, the first image of the film featuring Alicia Vikander and Christoph Waltz was released.[20] It has been delayed to rumours of re-editing, as Harvey Weinstein was 'unhappy' with the final cut.[21]
