After the death of his father, in [[1675]], and under a treaty of division of the family lands with his olders brothers, he received the towns of [[Saalfeld]], [[Gräfenthal]] and [[Probstzella]] (in [[1681]), [[Pössneck]] (in [[1682]]), [[Römhild]] and 5/12 of [[Themar]] (in [[1714]]).
His first marriage was to [[Sophia Hedwig von Sachsen-Merseburg]]. They had a son [[Christian Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld]] (1683–1745).

His second marriage was to [[Charlotte Johanna von Waldeck und Pyrmont]]. With her, he had a second son, [[Franz Josias, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld]], who succeeded his elder brother as Duke after he died in 1745. He died on [[17 December]], [[1729]].

Johann Ernst, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (b. Gotha, 22 August 1658 - d. Saalfeld, 17 February 1729) was a duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld.

He was the tenth but seventh surviving son of Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Altenburg and Elisabeth Sophie of Saxe-Altenburg.

After the death of his father, in 1675, and under a treaty of division of the family lands with his olders brothers, he received the towns of Saalfeld, Gräfenthal and Probstzella (in [[1681]), Pössneck (in 1682), Römhild and 5/12 of Themar (in 1714).

In Merseburg on 18 February 1680, Johann Ernst married with Sophia Hedwig von Sachsen-Merseburg. They have three children:

  1. Christiane Sofie (b. Saalfeld, 14 June 1681 - d. Saalfeld, 3 June 1697).
  2. Christian Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (b. Saalfeld, 18 August 1683 - d. Saalfeld, 4 September 1745).
  3. Charlotte Wilhelmine (b. Saalfeld, 4 May 1685 - d. Hanau, 5 April 1767), married on 26 December 1705 to Philipp Reinhard of Hanau-Lichtenberg.
