Yennai Arindhaal ([Well, If You Know Me] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help)) is an Indian Tamil drama-thriller film[2][3] co-written and directed by Gautham Menon, and produced by A. M. Rathnam. The film stars Ajith Kumar, Trisha Krishnan, Anushka Shetty, Arun Vijay, Parvathy Nair and Vivek. The soundtrack album and background score for the film is composed by Harris Jayaraj. The film is edited by Anthony while Dan Macarthur handled the cinematography. Yennai Arindhaal is the story of a man named Sathyadev, from the age of 13 till the age of 38.[3] It is also the conclusion of Menon's "cop trilogy" that began with Kaakha Kaakha (2003) and continued with Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006).[4] The film featured in the Behindwoods list of the "Top 10 most Anticipated films of 2014",[5] before it's release was delayed to 2015. The film was released on 5 February 2015 to divided reviews.

Cast

Production

Development

In October 2013, producer A. M. Rathnam signed up Ajith Kumar for another film following their collaboration in Arrambam (2013) and director Gautham Menon was confirmed to direct the project.[6] Sridhar Raghavan, who wrote the script for the Bollywood film, Dum Maaro Dum (2011), was also signed by the team to assist Gautham Menon with film's script, Thiagarajan kumararaja an national award winner is also credited for the screenplay.[7] Harris Jayaraj was signed on as composer,[a] despite early speculations that A. R. Rahman would work on the film.[9]

Anirudh Ravichander had hinted about himself working in the film, but his inclusion remained unconfirmed, and ultimately proved to be untrue.[10] Australia-based cinemtographer Dan Macarthur was selected to do the film's cinematography.[11] The film was earlier rumored to be titled Sathya, which was denied by sources.[12] Another potential title for the film was Aayiram Thottakal.[13] On 29 October 2014, Suresh Chandra, Ajith's agent, confirmed the title for the film to be Yennai Arindhaal ([Well, if you know me...] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help)).[14] The title of the dubbed Telugu version was announced as Yentha Vaadu Gannie ([No matter how strong the opponent is...] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help)) along with few poster designs on 23 November 2014.[15]

Casting

Anushka Shetty was signed on by the team to play the female lead, despite early suggestions that Pallavi Subhash had been selected for the film.[16] Actresses Trisha Krishnan and Amy Jackson were also reported to be approached by Gautham Menon to play the first female lead role.[17] Prior to the official announcement of the cast, several actors were linked to portray the role of the antagonist in the film including Karthik and Prashanth.[18] Actors Aadhi, Arun Vijay and Arvind Swamy were also reported to be part of the cast, though the latter denied signing the film.[19][20] Aadhi also clarified on not acting in the film.[21] In mid-April 2014, Arun Vijay was confirmed to portray the film's antagonist and had started filming his portions.[22]

On 18 April 2014, comedian Vivek joined the cast, collaborating with Gautham Menon after the director's first venture Minnale (2001).[8] Bangalore based Amit Bhargav was selected to play the role of Anushka's beau in the film.[23] On 15 May 2014, Trisha Krishnan was officially cast as another female lead of the film, collaborating with Gautham Menon for the second time after Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010).[24] Her role was later confirmed as the wife of Ajith's character.[25] Actor Thalaivasal Vijay was chosen to play a supporting role.[26] Ajith's salary was reported to be around ₹250 million (US$3.0 million) for the film.[27] Parvathy Nair was cast in a prime role paired opposite Arun Vijay,[28] making this film her second in Tamil after the upcoming Uttama Villain.[29]

Menon stated that details regarding the film would be unveiled by the end of August 2014.[30] As per his statement, Menon later said that Ajith would appear in four different looks in the film, and Anushka would portray an IT professional in the film.[31] Trisha said that her portion in the film would have a more intense love story than her last outing with Gautham Menon, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010).[32] She further said that though Ajith had been playing commercial films off late, this film would show him in a radical avatar that she herself would love to see him in.[33] It was confirmed that Ajith would be sporting black hair, a thick moustache and a slimmer look in the portions involving Baby Ankitha and Trisha, whereas he would appear in his natural grey hair style in the portions involving Anushka.[34][35] According to sources, Ajith would be seen riding a Bullet Bike in the film.[36] Stills featuring Ajith sporting a bearded look were released in early October 2014.[37] In November 2014, Vivek confirmed that his character — a police officer — would be a rather serious character with only a subtle sense of humour.[38]

Filming

A. M. Rathnam issued an official statement confirming that the film would be launched on 9 April 2014 and a ceremony was thereafter held to mark the beginning of the project.[39] The first filming schedule subsequently began on 11 April 2014 near the VGP Universal Kingdom theme park near Chennai.[40] The first schedule was completed after 12 days of shooting in Chennai, during which an action sequence was filmed.[41]

The second schedule began shooting on 14 May 2014.[42] A lot of night time shooting was said to have taken place in the film, especially in Mount Road.[43] Shooting also took place in Malaysia.[44] Dan Macarthur confirmed that the second schedule was completed by the end of May 2014.[45] A wedlock scene between Ajith and Trisha was canned in the last week of July 2014.[46] Shooting continued in Chennai along the ECR stretch up to the first week of August,[47] during which the portions involving Baby Ankitha were completed.[48] In the second week of August 2014, about 75% of the filming was reported to be completed and a few scenes, including a train sequence, were shot in Hyderabad.[49] A scene featuring Ajith and Trisha and background artists was filmed in a theatre.[50]

Filming moved to Rajasthan where a song sequence was shot in segments in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer for 10 days.[51] A romantic song, "Mazhai Varapoguthey", which featured Ajith, was shot in September 2014.[52] Filming then proceeded in Sikkim, where a "lullaby" song sequence featuring Ajith and Baby Ankitha was shot.[53][54] The final schedule of filming began at Hyderabad again, where filming continued for 15 days.[55] By late November, the shoots of all the songs have been done and a fight sequence was shot in Binny Mills in Meenambakkam, Chennai. A solo song with Trisha was also completed. In early December, shooting of the climax chase sequence was done in guerrilla film-making mode in some busy roads of Chennai without the knowledge of the public.[56] Shoot of climax fight sequences began on 8 December 2014.[57] Few key scenes were shot at Hyderabad Railway Station in mid December 2014.[58] Later few patchwork scenes were shot at Chennai for 3 days with which principal photography came to an end.[59]

The film was shot entirely with Arri Alexa digital camera.[60]

Music

The film's soundtrack album and background score was composed by Harris Jayaraj. The soundtrack album consists of seven tracks.[61] In July 2014, Harris recorded a romantic song sung by Karthik with lyrics penned by Thamarai.[62] For the first song in the film, Harris updated that he had recorded a fresh voice from the UK.[63] It was confirmed that the background score of the film and the film's songs would be done in Dolby Atmos surround sound system.[64] According to reports, the introduction song in the film was planned to be similar to "Karka Karka" from Menon's Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006).[65] In August 2014, Harris wrote on his Twitter page that he had started recording his third song for the film.[66] On 18 September 2014, Harris updated that 3 of the songs were completed.[54]

The audio rights of the film's soundtrack album were purchased by Sony Music.[67] Harris Jayaraj was busy working on the final mix of the OST in early December 2014.[68] He then announced on 8 December 2014 that a single track will be unveiled soon as per the makers' plan in response to the request by Ajith's fans.[69] The soundtrack was confirmed to feature six tracks including the introduction song, a mass number featuring Ajith and Arun Vijay sung by Vijay Prakash and Gaana Bala. The soundtrack was expected to be unveiled on 19 December 2014 considering the Thursday sentiment being followed by the makers who are ardent devotees of Sai Baba.[70]

It was later confirmed by Sony Music that a track titled Adhaaru Adhaaru would release as the lead single from the soundtrack.[71][72] The song was released on the 11th of December 2014 and its lyrics were penned by Vignesh Shivan. It was also known that out of the remaining five songs, Trisha would have a solo song.[73] Adhaaru Adhaaru became an instant hit among Ajith's fans who started trends with two hash tags - #CelebratingYennaiArindhaalSingle and #AdhaaruAdhaaru. In 24 hours, the single track got over 30 thousand hits on YouTube. It was liked by more than 7 thousand viewers.[74] The Hindu remarked that Harris Jayaraj's music repeatied the magic of his last collaboration with Gautham Menon for the film Vaaranam Aayiram (2008).[75] Through his official twitter handle, Harris Jayaraj confirmed that Adhaaru Adhaaru is a gangster song and not Ajith's introduction song in the film.[76] Within hours of its release the track topped the iTunes Indian songs chart.[77][78][79] [80] The track list of the soundtrack was released by Sony Music on 26 December, 2014.[81] The audio was released on 1 January, 2015 at exactly 12.00 am. Within hours of its release, the soundtrack topped the iTunes Indian albums chart.[82] The album received positive reviews from critics.[83][84][85][86]

Release

The satellite rights of the film were sold to Jaya TV. The film was earlier expected to be released in January 2015.[87] But Gautham Menon confirmed that the audio launch would take place in November 2014 and the film was planned for a December release.[52] On 22 November 2014, it was confirmed that the film would be released in 15 January 2015, during the festive occasion of Pongal,[88] but the film was again postponed to 29 January, due to delays in post-production,[89] and later to 5 February.[90]

Marketing

Trisha's first look in the film was revealed in mid-August 2014, where she was seen on the sets sporting a saree.[91] Another still of the actress was made available on the 29th of August 2014.[92] The film's title and first look poster were reported to be revealed in August 2014, on Ganesh Chaturthi.[93] However, a still featuring Ajith in his black haired look was released instead, where he was pictured riding a Royal Enfield Bike.[94] More stills featuring Ajith and the other cast and crew members were released on the same day.[95] The first teaser trailer was released on 3 December 2014, and gained over 5 lakh views within 12 hours of its release on YouTube.[96] The teaser received over 44000 likes in YouTube, the highest number of likes for a South Indian film, in just over a day.[97] The teaser later went on to cross 55,000 likes in three days. The teaser became the most-liked Indian film teaser, which was previously held by Bang Bang! (2014) with 61,429 likes at that time.[98] Sony Music released the Telugu version of the teaser on 8 December 2014.[99]

The teaser of Ajith's Yennai Arindhaal has crossed a major milestone in the form of 5 million views on YouTube, becoming the second South Indian film after 'I' to cross this mark. The teaser has also received a 92,000 plus likes so far.[100]
