Hiphop Tamizha is an Indian musical duo consisting of musicians Adhi and Jeeva based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Initially underground, the duo achieved wide recognition through the track "Club le Mabbu le"; a radio performance of the song received over two million views within a week of its release on YouTube in 2011. The international brand Remy Martin, after hearing the song and being impressed with their determination, eventually launched Hiphop Tamizha as an official brand. In 2012, Hiphop Tamizha released their debut album Hip Hop Tamizhan which became a critical and commercial success. According to Adhi, Hiphop Tamizha is a "movement started to promote hip hop culture" in Tamil Nadu; they are also credited to be the pioneers of Tamil hip hop. The duo have also contributed to numerous works outside independent music, including performing and composing for films and launching a clothing brand.

Origins

"Initially in 2005 most of hip hop artists used the Internet as the forum to promote their music. On the advice of YOGI-B and looking at the gradual growth of music in Tamil Nadu, I took the initiative to have an online forum called HIP HOP Tamizha with active participation from many artists. Later in 2010, it became a registered organisation uniting all the hip hop artists including beatboxers, MCs , DJs and every single artist interested in this kind of music together under one wing. It's a movement started to promote hip hop culture in the State."

— Adhi, on how Hiphop Tamizha developed[1]

Adhi was born Adhithya Venkatapathy,[2] into a middle-class family with no knowledge in music or cinema; his father works at Bharathiar University while his mother comes from an agricultural background.[3] Adhi came to know of rap music through Michael Jackson's "Jam".[4] His interest in hip hop music started developing when he was in the tenth grade. He would upload rap songs to the internet and got positive response from people expressing interest in listening to more of his music; this encouraged him to start rapping in Tamil, also because he was more comfortable with it.[1] Adhi named his account on the then less popular video-sharing site YouTube as "Hiphop Tamizha" with an image of the Tamil poet Subramania Bharati, to avoid being caught by his parents.[2] Adhi's father had initially opposed his idea of choosing music as his career;[5] Adhi himself had no formal education in music.[6] He studied at Chavara Vidya Bhavan, and electrical engineering at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology. He holds a state-level rank in Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test and is a graduate in Master of Business Administration from Madras University. As of October 2014, he is studying a Ph.D course at Bharathiar University.[2]

In 2006, Adhi released Viswaroobam Arambam,[7] considered the first Tamil hip hop mixtape.[1] In 2006, he met Yogi B of the Malaysian hiphop group Poetic Ammo, who became Hiphop Tamizha's advisor.[4] Adhi first met Jeeva in Orkut in 2005;[2][8] the latter adopted the moniker "DJ Jeeva Beatz".[7] The group started as underground, until they were asked by the Tamil Nadu Election Commission to compose an election anthem; Adhi never knew how they found the group.[4] Hiphop Tamizha's single "Ezhuvoam Vaa" was eventually chosen as the official anthem for Tamil Nadu's 2011 state elections;[9] the song was however unsuccessful.[10] While Hiphop Tamizha consists primarily of Adhi and Jeeva,[8][11] other independent artists have also collaborated with them, including beatboxer Bharadwaj Balaji (also known as BBB or Triple B) and B-boy Bravo.[7][12][13] The official logo of Hiphop Tamizha is a graffiti of Bharati.[1]

Career

The song "Club le Mabbule" was composed by Adhi when he was in his first year of college. In 2011, when Adhi started taking it seriously and doing it as a project, he approached several radio stations;[4] Ma Ka Pa Anand — then an RJ at Radio Mirchi — allowed Adhi to perform the song on his show,[2] with Bharadwaj Balaji also performing.[14] The recording became viral, crossing over two million views within a week of its release on YouTube. Afterwards Remy Martin, an international brand, was surprised by his determination and after listening to the song they decided to launch "Hiphop Tamizha" as an official brand.[2] Hiphop Tamizha are often credited to be the pioneers of Tamil hip hop.[15]

Their debut album Hip Hop Tamizhan was released on 17 August 2012 at Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai. Publicised as "India's first Tamil hip hop album", the album was launched by Purple note and produced by Remy Martin, who was for the first time associated with an Indian album. The music for all the songs was composed by Adhi and Jeeva while the songs were written by Adhi.[9] The studio version of "Club le Mabbu Le" released on 26 August 2012 on YouTube.[16] The official music video for "Iraivaa" was officially launched on 6 April 2013,[17] along with a video documenting it's making.[18] "Iraivaa" was uploaded to YouTube 13 April 2013.[19][20] Venkatrangan R of Musicperk called the album "A must listen. Not only for the music but for the messages hidden in it."[9] The album was a commercial success, and became the best-selling music album of 2012 on Flipkart.[21]

The India Book of Records later recognised Hiphop Tamizha as the "first artiste to release a Tamil hip hop album from India".[22] On 14 February 2013, Adhi received the award for "Internet sensation of the year" from BIG FM 92.7.[23] Later in the same month, Hiphop Tamizha won the "Independent Artist of the Year" award at Anna University's annual event Techofes.[24]

In November 2013, Adhi had signed an international album with Remy Martin, titled International Tamizhan, which will feature eight tracks, including two songs by American artists Sol and MC Call. The album, which was incorrectly named Hip Hop Tamizhan by The Hindu, will be released in English, Hindi and Tamil, and was initially scheduled for release on 15 August 2014;[10][25] however, the band instead released the official video for the song "Vaadi Pulla Vaadi" from the album on the same date,[26] and as of October 2014, the album, according to Adhi is "under progress".[2] In December 2014, he announced that he will launch "Madrasi Mafia", a music label that will manage independent music artists.[3]

Musical style

Adhi told Sudhish Kamath that he was inspired by the works of Michael Jackson and Jay-Z.[4] Although the songs "Manithan Tamizhan" and "Tamizhanda" glorify the culture and language of Tamil Nadu while simultaneously lamenting their negligence in present day,[9] Adhi has stated that through Hiphop Tamizha and their songs, he does not want to preach that Tamil people should speak their native language or sing praises for it, but to give it the same respect as English.[8] He has also said that he wants to change the Indian urban culture of hip-hop being about wearing "baggy pants, ‘bling’ and big shirts" and eliminate the notion that rap music is about "the money, the women and the gangster-ism".[27]

The duo's songs cover a wide range of issues across various fields; "Club le Mubbu le" covers the ills of Tamil women, which include clubbing, pubbing, drinking, smoking, doing weed and having live-in relationships.[28] "Vaddi Pulla Vaadi" focuses on the conflicts of caste and love, and was inspired by the personal experiences of Adhi's friends.[8] According to him, "Iraiva" talks about how love is not the end of life: "Two people might really be in love, but because of things like caste, they might not be able to be together. This, we feel, is because of lack of education and awareness". The song "Karpom Karpippom" is dedicated to education.[12]

Controversies

"Club le Mubbu le" created a stir because of its portrayal and depiction of Tamil women.[28] Sofia Ashraf, lyricist and rapper of the Chennai-based band Peter Kaapi band claimed that "the song was not only disrespectful to women but also an insult to rap music which began as a medium of subversion". Adhi however defended the song and said, "Hip hop is about self expression and opinions so such controversies are only natural. The song was intended as a fun number and most people like it because the lyrics are witty. We also sings [sic] about social causes like education and individual identity"; he eventually released an apology video titled "Senthamil Gal".[29]

Other works

Despite initially expressing no interest in singing or composing for films,[30] Adhi and Hiphop Tamizha have contributed to numerous works concerning cinema; Adhi sang his first film song,[30] titled "Thapellam Thappe Illai" composed by Vijay Antony for Naan (2012).[31] He also sang the title track of Ethir Neechal (2013) composed by Anirudh Ravichander and accompanied by Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh.[32][33] Adhi wrote "Sudden Delight", composed by Santhosh Narayanan for Soodhu Kavvum (2013).[34] In May 2013, Anirudh again collaborated with Adhi to perform the song "Chennai City Gangsta" along with Hard Kaur for Vanakkam Chennai.[35][36] In July 2013, Hiphop Tamizha composed "Na Na Na (Nice v/s Naughty)", a song used for promoting The Smurfs 2 in India. The song also features nine contestants from the singing reality show Indian Idol Junior.[37][38]

In August 2013, Adhi told Behindwoods that he would be acting as the lead in a film based on Hiphop Tamizha, which did not materialise;[39] in October 2014 he told Kungumam that despite receiving many offers, he has no interest in acting as a cinematic hero.[40] In November 2013, Hiphop Tamizha launched "Tamizhanda Clothing", a collaboration between them and a firm named Difference of Opinion.[41] Hiphop Tamizha's third collaboration with Anirudh was for Kaththi (2014) where they performed the song "Pakkam Vanthu".[42][43] Hiphop Tamizha debuted as music composers for Aambala (2015),[44][45] where they wrote all the six songs and performed three: "Pazhagikalaam", "Aye Aye Aye" and "Inbam Pongum Vennila".[46][47] They will also compose for Indru Netru Naalai,[48][49] set to be released in March 2015.[50] Adhi wrote and co-performed "Naam Vaazhndhidum", composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja for the upcoming Vai Raja Vai.[51][52]
