Hiphop Tamizha is an Indian musical duo consisting of vocalist Adhithya "Adhi" Venkatapathy[1] and disc jockey Jeeva based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Initially underground, the duo achieved wide recognition through the track "Club le Mabbu le"; a radio performance of the song received over four and a half lakh views on YouTube. In 2006, Adhi released Vishwaroobam Arambam, considered the first Tamil hip hop mixtape from India. In 2012, Hiphop Tamizha released their debut album Hiphop Tamizhan which became a critical and commercial success. According to Adhi, Hiphop Tamizha is a "movement started to promote hip hop culture" in Tamil Nadu. The duo have also contributed to numerous works outside independent music, including performing in films and launching a clothing brand.

Origins

Adhi came to know of rap music through Michael Jackson's "Jam".[2] His interest in hip hop music started developing when he was in the tenth grade. He would upload rap songs to the internet and got positive response from people expressing interest in listening to more of his music; this encouraged him to start rapping in Tamil, also because he was more comfortable with it.[3] Adhi's father had initially opposed his idea of choosing music as his career;[4] Adhi himself had no formal education in music.[5] Adhi studied at Chavara Vidya Bhavan, and finished a course on Electrical engineering at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Coimbatore. He holds a state-level rank in Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test and is a graduate in Master of Business Administration from Madras University. As of October 2014, he is studying a Ph.D course at Bharathiar University.[1]

In 2006, Adhi released Viswaroobam Arambam,[6] considered the first Tamil hip hop mixtape.[3] In an interview with The Hindu, Adhi spoke of the group Hiphop Tamizha's formation:[3]

Initially in 2005 most of hip hop artists used the Internet as the forum to promote their music. On the advice of YOGI-B and looking at the gradual growth of music in Tamil Nadu, I took the initiative to have an online forum called HIP HOP Tamizha with active participation from many artists. Later in 2010, it became a registered organisation uniting all the hip hop artists including beatboxers, MCs , DJs and every single artist interested in this kind of music together under one wing. It's a movement started to promote hip hop culture in the State.

Adhi, in an interview with Sudhish Kamath, said that he was inspired by the works of Michael Jackson and Jay-Z. In 2006, he met Yogi B of the Malaysian hiphop group Poetic Ammo, who became Hiphop Tamizha's advisor.[2] Adhi first met Hiphop Tamizha's disc jockey Jeeva in Orkut in 2005;[1][7] the latter adopted the moniker "DJ Jeeva Beatz".[6] The group started as underground, until they were asked by the Tamil Nadu Election Commission to compose an election anthem; Adhi never knew how they found the group.[2] Hiphop Tamizha's single "Ezhuvoam Vaa" was eventually chosen as the official anthem for Tamil Nadu's 2011 state elections;[8] the song was however unsuccessful.[9] While Hiphop Tamizha consists primarily of Adhi and Jeeva,[7] other independent artists have also collaborated with them, including beatboxer Bharadwaj Balaji (also known as BBB or Triple B) and B-boy Bravo.[6][10][11] The official logo of Hiphop Tamizha is a graffiti of the Tamil poet Subramania Bharati.[3]

Career

Their debut album Hip Hop Tamizhan was released on 17 August 2012 at Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai. Publicised as "India's first Tamil hip hop album", the album was launched by Purple note and produced by Remy Martin, who was for the first time associated with an Indian album. The music for all the songs was composed by Adhi and Jeeva while the songs were written by Adhi.[8] "Club le Mabbule" was composed by Adhi when he was in his first year of college. One year prior to the album's release, when he "started taking it seriously and doing this as a project", he approached several radio stations who helped him on the song; a radio performance of the song received over four and a half lakh views on YouTube.[2] The studio version was released on 26 August 2012.[12] The official music video for "Iraivaa" was officially launched on 6 April 2013,[13] along with a video documenting it's making.[14] "Iraivaa" was uploaded to YouTube 13 April 2013.[15][16] Venkatrangan R of Musicperk called the album "A must listen. Not only for the music but for the messages hidden in it."[8] The album was a commercial success, and became the best-selling music album of 2012 on Flipkart.[17]

The India Book of Records later recognised Hiphop Tamizha as the "first artiste to release a Tamil hip hop album from India".[18] On 14 February 2013, Adhi received the award for "Internet sensation of the year" from BIG FM 92.7.[19] Later in the same month, Hiphop Tamizha won the "Independent Artist of the Year" award at Anna University's annual event Techofes.[20]

In November 2013, Adhi had signed an international album with Remy Martin, titled International Tamizhan, which will feature 8 tracks, including two songs by American artists Sol and MC Call. The album, which was incorrectly named Hip Hop Tamizhan by The Hindu, will be released in English, Hindi and Tamil, and was initially scheduled for release on 15 August 2014;[9][21] however, the band instead released the official video for the song "Vaadi Pulla Vaadi" from the album on the same date,[22] and as of October 2014, the album, according to Adhi is "under progress".[1]

Controversies

The number Club le Mubbu le created a stir because of its portrayal of Tamil women in bad light, such as "clubbing, pubbing, drinking, smoking, doing weed, having live-in relationships and so on and so forth".[23] Sofia Ashraf, lyricist and rapper of the Chennai-based Peter Kaapi band claimed that "the song was not only disrespectful to women but also an insult to rap music which began as a medium of subversion". Adhi however defended the song and said, "Hip hop is about self expression and opinions so such controversies are only natural. The song was intended as a fun number and most people like it because the lyrics are witty. We also sings [sic] about social causes like education and individual identity".[24]
