History

Paravur was an important place for the Kings of Travancore. They have used Pozhikara Palace in Paravur, to take rest during their long journeys. Before and after the independence of India, Paravur was a famous business center in Kollam. It holds a very old history and a 1000 years old civilization.

Paravur was a part of 'Pennarasunaadu'(situated between Venad and Desinganadu). Paravur Fort was under the Queen of Attingal during that time. Paravur was a famous trade hub for the foreign countries. An important ancient document revealing paravur's yester importance is 'Pozhikkara sasanam' built in 12th century at Pozhikara sivakshetram (later it became a devikshetram ). It was encrypted on a 'sila phalakam' in 'vattazhuthu'. Another mentioning of Paravur is in 'Unnineeli sandesam' which was written above more than 600 years.

Pozhikara was the administrative headquarters of Paravur. Remnants of old fort, Thaana(police station) and Anchalappees(Post office) are still remaining there.[8] The Paravur panchayat was formed on 1936. It was one among the 4 Panchayats sanctioned by Sir C.P.Ramaswamy Iyer (Diwan-Thiruvithancore). The others were Boothapandi, Nedumangadu, and Perumbavoor. The so formed Paravur Panchayat included 9 territories-Thekkumbhagam, Kottappuram, Kongal, Pozhikara, Kurumandal, Koonayil, Kalakkode, Bhoothakkulam and Nellettil. Sree Ramavarma koyi thampuram from Kilimanoor Palace was the first executive officer of the panchayat. The first election for Paravur panchayat was held at 1942 and Sri Achuthan Pillai became the first elected Panchayat President. Later Paravur became a Municipality on 1988 May 1. For the first 7 years it was ruled by special officers. In 1995 after the first Municipal election Smt. Bhanumati became the first Municipal Chairperson.[9]

Transportation

Paravur is well connected with other Kerala cities and towns. Rail, road and water transportation are the various modes of available transportation in town.

Air

Nearest Airport is Trivandrum International Airport, which is about 55 kilometres (34 mi) away. Kollam Helipad (Asramam) is about 24 kilometres (15 mi) away from Paravur and Varkala Helipad (Cliff) is about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) away. Government of Kerala have proposed a Seaplane service connecting Paravur with Ashtamudi, Punnamada, Kumarakom and Bekal. They have plans to build a Water drome in Paravur Kayal.

Rail

Entrance of Paravur railway station

Paravur railway station, an "Adarsh station", is situated at a distance of half kilometer away from the heart of Paravur town. It is a 'D-Class' railway station coming under the Southern Railway Zone. The annual passenger earnings of Paravur Railway Station during 2012-2013 is Rs. 1,40,58,504(USD 230108.89) and became the third railway station in Kollam district collecting more than Rs.1,00,00,000 through passenger tickets.[10] It is well connected to Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Salem, Madurai, Kanyakumari, Mangalore, Coimbatore, Pune, Tirunelveli, Trichy and various towns in Kerala through Indian Railways. Paravur Railway Station is the nearest railway station to ESI Medical College Parippally. There has been a constant demand for stoppage of more trains taking into account the number of commuters using the trains to commute to Kollam and also to Trivandrum for access Educational and vocational needs. It is the only railway station in Chathannoor constituency.

Paravur is accessible from NH-47 from both Chathannoor and Parippally. Varkala is about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) from Paravur. K.S.R.T.C and private bus services connects Paravur to other adjacent towns. In fact, Paravur is just 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) away from Kollam City through the coastal road which is now engulfed by the Arabian sea. Constant efforts are there to repair the coastal road, but the repaired road cannot withstand the furious waves most of the time. Paravur may included in the proposed JnNURM plan for the Kollam.

But renewed efforts are underway to start linking the waterways to an ambitious inland waterways system being sponsored by the state government on the lines of what had once existed. One could easily view them on the way towards Pozhikara and towards Kappil. The lake meets the sea and in between a small stretch of road which divides them can be viewed on way. Paravur Lake is one of the emerging tourist destinations in the district which attracts a good number of tourists.[14] So many tour operators in India are providing leisure trips that connect with Paravur.[15]

Paravur Lake – An evening scene from Paravur Thekkumbhagam

The National Centre for Earth Science Studies in Thiruvananthapuram has carried out a Coastal Regulation Zone(CRZ) mapping during March 2014 to June 2014. The field data was generated from 33 coastal villages of Kollam district and Paravur Municipality. Lakes like Paravur, Ashtamudi and Kayamkulam are the major backwaters of the district which are interconnected by T.S Canal. Pozhikkara & Thekkumbhagam-Kappil are the small tidal inlets identified in the district. The CRZ-II is the developed areas(with more than 50% build-up area) in legally designed Kollam Municipal Corporation and Paravur Municipality urban areas. Kollam Municipal Corporation and Paravur Municipality are highly developed with a very high potential of further development, the CRZ in the Corporation and Municipality, other than CRZ I, CRZ IV and open spaces such as parks and play grounds is considered to have build up area more than 50% and hence categorized as CRZ II.[16]
