Annabelle is a 2014 American supernatural horror film directed by John R. Leonetti, produced by James Wan, and written by Gary Dauberman. It is both a prequel to and spin-off of The Conjuring.[4] The film stars Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton, and Alfre Woodard. The film will be released worldwide on October 3, 2014.[5]
Annabelle premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on September 29, 2014.[6]
Plot
John Gordon has found the perfect gift for both his pregnant wife Mia and their unborn child; Annabelle, a beautiful and rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. Unfortunately, the family's delight with the doll is short-lived. On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack John and Mia. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity, which is so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now Annabelle.

Production
On November 8, 2013, a spin-off film of The Conjuring, featuring Annabelle the Doll from the film, was announced to be in development by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. It is based on a true story that was also investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren[10] and the case of Annabelle was covered in chapter three of The Demonologist: The Extraordinary Career of Ed and Lorraine Warren by Gerard Brittle. With Peter Safran and James Wan to produce, John R. Leonetti was set to direct the film from a script written by Gary Dauberman.[4]
Director John R. Leonetti states that some supernatural phenomena might have actually occurred on the set of Annabelle, Leonetti said:
"The first [incident] was when we were prepping," says Leonetti. "We went into the apartment where we were shooting, and in the transient window above the living room window. It was a full moon, and there were three fingers drawn through the dust along the window, and our demon has three fingers and three talons. [The markings] were being backlit by the moon. I have a picture! It was sick."
Peter Safran, producer of both Annabelle and The Conjuring, also stated that supernatural events possibly occurred on the set, stating:
"We shot in this amazing, old apartment building near Koreatown and we had some funky stuff go down," Safran told THR. "In particular, the first day that the demon was shooting in full makeup, we brought the demon up in the elevator. He walks out and walks around to the green room to where we’re holding the talent, and just as he walks under — a giant glass light fixture is being followed by the actor playing the handyman of the building — and all of a sudden the entire glass light fixture falls down on his head, the janitor‘s head. And in the script the demon kills the janitor in that hallway. It was totally freaky."[11]
Casting
On January 15, 2014, news confirmed that Annabelle Wallis and Ward Horton had joined the lead cast of the film.[7] Two more actors, Eric Ladin and Brian Howe, joined the film in late January before award-winning veteran Alfre Woodard also joined the cast.[8][9]
Filming
Principal photography began on January 27, 2014 at The Book Shop in Covina.[8][12][13][14] On February 25, 2014, filming continued at an apartment in South Normandie Avenue where the 55-member crew shot for several days.[15]
Release
Warner Bros. has set the film for an October 3, 2014 worldwide release.[5] It will be released in over 52 foreign markets on its opening weekend.[16]
Reception
Critical reception
Annabelle has been met with mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 29%, based on 33 reviews, with an average rating of 4.5/10. The site's consensus reads, "Annabelle borrows unabashedly from better horror films, content to leave viewers with a string of cheap jolts that fail to build on the far more effective The Conjuring."[17] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 40 out of 100, based on 15 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[18]
