Anjaan ([Fearless] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help)) is a 2014 Tamil action thriller film directed by N. Lingusamy, and produced under his banner Thirupathi Brothers.[6] The film stars Suriya in a dual role,[7] with Samantha Ruth Prabhu as the female lead,[8] while Bollywood actors Manoj Bajpai, Vidyut Jamwal, Rajpal Yadav, and Dalip Tahil play supporting roles.[9] Cinematography and editing were handled by Santosh Sivan and Anthony, respectively, while Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the film's music and background score.[10] The premiere of the film was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 14 August 2014,[11] and released worldwide on 15 August 2014.[1][12] The Telugu dubbed version was titled Sikander.[13] The film received mixed reviews from critics,[14] who praised Suriya's performance, the background score and cinematography, but criticised the script, the direction, the length of the film, the placement of songs and the screenplay.[15]

Plot

The film begins with a crutch-wielding Krishna (Suriya) coming to Mumbai to locate his brother. He visits a few places where his brother's acquaintances could be found and learns that his brother Raju (also Suriya) is Raju Bhai to the people of the city. He then meets Karim Bhai (Joe Malloori), who reveals that Raju and Chandru (Vidyut Jamwal) were inseparable friends who were gangsters with growing clout and were well-respected and feared even though they weren't big time dons. As they start getting popular in the underworld, their list of enemies too grows. A new police commissioner then decides to clean the city and kills a few men from their gang for which Raju Bhai retaliates by kidnapping the commissioner's daughter, Jeeva (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) and subsequently they fall in love. Things go well until Raju and Chandru invoke the wrath of Imran Bhai (Manoj Bajpai) an underworld don and a bigger criminal than them. A twist in the tale takes place when Chandru is murdered in a ghastly manner and a clueless Raju who goes in search of the killers is also trapped. In a twist of events, it is revealed that Krishna is Raju. Raju survived the gunshots and he came back as Krishna to avoid being identified as Raju unitl he finds out who were the betrayers. He then goes on killing his betrayers until Jeeva gets kidnapped. Raju then battles the villains to rescue Jeeva and reunites with her after having successfully rescued her.

Development

In July 2012, it was reported first that Suriya had signed on Lingusamy's film to be produced under the director's banner and that he would work on it after Maattrraan (2012) and Hari's Singam 2 (2013).[16] After the completion of both films, the actor was reported to work simultaneously with Lingusamy and director Gautham Menon for a film titled Dhruva Natchathiram.[17] In September 2013, many sources incorrectly stated that the film was titled Mumbai Rowdy, however the director denied these as rumors.[18] Suriya reportedly waited for six months after Singam 2, but failed to receive a complete script from Gautham Menon and no progress took place in this period of time. Owing to this reason, he opted out of Gautham's film in October 2013 and announced that he would soon start work on Lingusamy's film.[19] The director confirmed the news and also stated the film would officially start filming from mid-November 2013. It was said that the script had been modified a few times.[20] The film was started without a title. In January 2014, the title was officially announced to be Anjaan.[21] Vijay Milton was initially signed by Lingusamy as the cinematographer for the film,[22] but in October 2013 he was replaced with Santosh Sivan, collaborating with Lingusamy for the first time.[23] The film's editing was reported to be handled by Anthony while Rajeevan was recruited as the art director. Brinda Sarathy was confirmed to be the dialogue writer for the film.[24]

Casting

In early November 2013, Manoj Bajpai was reported to be playing the film's antagonist while Vidyut Jamwal would also appear in a prominent role.[25] Dalip Tahil was signed on for the role of a small, but powerful don in the film.[26] In January 2014, actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu was added to the cast.[27] Comedian Vivek was approached to play a role in the film,[28] but could not take up the offer as a result of date clashes with Vai Raja Vai.[29] Instead in March 2014, another comedian Soori was signed.[30] Sana Khan was approached to do a special number in the film but she declined the offer as she wanted to promote her Bollywood film Jai Ho (2014).[31] Actress Maryam Zakaria was chosen to do an item number in the film.[32] Chitrangada Singh was chosen for another item number after discussions to have Sonakshi Sinha[33] and later, Kareena Kapoor, in the song were unsuccessful.[34]

Filming

In mid-October 2013, a test shoot occurred with Suriya and Malavika Rampradeep, a Bharatanatyam dancer, with the Red Dragon 6K Digital camera along with a high zoom lens.[35] It was reported that it was the first film in the world to be shot with the camera.[36] The technology had not even been used in Hollywood films, according to the makers.[37] Suriya was said to possess two different appearances for filming, starting with a raw and jagged look,[24] whereas, his other look was not yet revealed and that it was kept as a surprise for his fans in the movie.[38] Filming started on 20 November 2013 in Mumbai.[39] A few days before it began, Suriya completed a photo-shoot of the film which was done by still photographer Venkatram.[40] The lead actors were shooting in Mumbai, but came back to Chennai before the one-month schedule.[41] In December 2013 the intro song was filmed with Suriya, Vidyut Jamwal and Maryam Zakaria.[32] The song was shot in a set, worth 80 lakh (US$96,000), that had been erected in Borivali in Mumbai.[42] The first schedule was wrapped in early January 2014.[43] In early February 2014, the crew was shooting for a song sequence in Panchgani.[44][45] The third schedule started on 5 March 2014 in Mumbai.[46] An item number featuring Manoj Bajpai and Chitrangada Singh was shot in March 2014.[33] The song written by Na. Muthukumar was shot in June 2014 at the Morjim and Miramar beaches of Goa during the final schedule of 10 days.[47]

Incidents

On 30 March 2014, when shooting progressed in Mumbai, a group of people belonging to a Tamil group disrupted the shoot and hurled abuses at director Lingusamy and cameraman Santosh Sivan, for making Inam (2014). Lingusamy decided to cancel the shoot for the day.[48]

While shooting for the film in Goa, Suriya injured his knee during a stunt sequence. Lingusamy stated that the actor suffered a minor ligament tear when a fighter who weighed about 120 kgs fell from a height on his leg. The entire unit panicked when the incident happened but the actor wasn't fluttered. The director clarified that Suriya would be fit and fine soon and that he took a short break from shooting.[49][50]

Music

The soundtrack and the score for the film were composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, making Anjaan the fourth collaboration between the composer and director Lingusamy. The soundtrack album, released on 23 July 2014, features five tracks, written by four lyricists. The male portion of one of the songs, "Ek Do Theen", was sung by Suriya and became his first attempt at playback singing.[51]

Release

The film released worldwide on 15 August 2014.[1]

Distribution

Sridhar Lagadapati bought Anjaan's Telugu dubbing rights and distributed the film in Andhra and Telangana under his Larsco Entertainment banner.[13] Abirami Ramanathan, owner of Abhirami Mega Mall, acquired the rights to distribute the film in Chennai. As soon as the advance bookings for the film opened in Chennai, almost 5000 tickets were sold within 2 hours, therefore making a landmark record in Tamil cinema.[52]

The film released in 37 screens across Chennai,[53] 450 screens in Tamil Nadu[54] and 1400 screens worldwide,[55][56] in Tamil and Telugu languages.[57] Around 850 screens were allotted for the Tamil version alone.[58] The film also released in 25 screens in France,[59] 58 screens in the UK and 5 screens in Australia.[60][61] Yahaya Bhai of United India Exports distributed and marketed the film in foreign locations,[62] and Narmadha Media distributed the film in the United States,[63] where the film released in 65 screens.[64] The theatrical rights of the Telugu version was sold for 13 crore (US$1.6 million) and its rights in Karnataka were purchased for 3.5 crore (US$420,000).[5] The film was released in over 150 theatres in Kerala,[65] where its theatrical rights were sold for 3.5 crore (US$420,000).[5]

Anjaan reportedly set a record for pre-release business of Tamil films as it made about 87 crore (US$10 million) from its distribution, satellite and music rights.[5]

Marketing

The first look posters of the film were released on 1 May 2014.[66] The teaser of the film was launched along with the teaser of Kamal Hassan's Uttama Villain during the 8th Vijay Awards held on 6 July 2014 and was simultaneously uploaded to YouTube.[67] The teaser received positive response[62] and crossed 1 million views[68] Indiaglitz in it's review of the teaser said, "One could see the monotony which features in all the gangster flicks, but that has been easily shadowed by the power packed cast and crew".[69] The official trailer of the film was released on 8 August 2014 and aired on Sun Music.[70][71][72] The trailer too received positive response[73] and also crossed 1 million views[74] within 3 days of its release.[75] Behindwoods wrote in it's trailer review, "Lingusamy is eyeing another blockbuster here."[76] Indiaglitz in it's review, summarised, "Overall, the trailer lives up to the expectation and it is up to the movie now."[77] The video clip of the track "Ek Do Theen", featuring Suriya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu was released on YouTube on 11 August 2014.[78]

The official game titled Anjaan Race Wars was developed by Vroovy, a joint venture between Hungama Digital Media Entertainment and Gameshastra, who had previously developed and released the official movie games of Kochadaiiyaan (2014). It released on 28 July 2014.[79] The game play revolved around Suriya chasing the goons in a car. The features of the game included two types of AI - One of them shooting and the other ones try to run away, 5 different cars, including Hummer, featured in the game. Power ups included Nitro, Fuel, Ammo, Instant repair and Shield, while the weapons included Pistol and Shotgun. The game is available on Android and iOS operating systems.[80]

The film was released only through digital screens and no physical print was allowed for screening it anywhere. Since the film was shot with 6K resolution quality, the makers wanted only digital projection and this would enable it's makers to easily find where video piracy of the film had emanated from through special codes in each print.[81][55] As a result of this initiative, Anjaan became the first Indian film which had a 100% digital release.[82] It was also revealed that the film would release in Dolby Atmos surround sound system.[83]

Lingusamy and Suriya went to promote the film in Kochi,[84] at the prestigious Kavitha theatres in Ernakulam.[85] Two days before the film's release, Samantha and Lingusamy promoted the film at The Forum Vijaya Mall in Chennai.[86] The entire crew of the film including Suriya, Vidyut Jamwal, Lingusamy, Brinda Sarathy and Yuvan Shankar Raja attended the premiere of the film at Kuala Lumpur.[87][88]

Pictures of Samantha featuring in a bikini in one of the songs from the film was trending on Twitter and Facebook upon the film's release.[89][90][91]

Home Media

The television rights of the Tamil version were sold to Sun TV[92] for 16 crore (US$1.9 million).[5] and Gemini TV purchased the satellite rights of the dubbed Telugu version for 3 crore (US$360,000).[5]

Reception

Critical Reception

Anjaan was panned by critics and audience alike. Anupama Subramanian of the Deccan Chronicle gave 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, "It is high voltage revenge drama seen in umpteen numbers of films, but what makes the film work is Suriya’s stunning charisma combined with his incredible performance and glossy packaging of Lingusamy with all commercial elements including action, glam quotient, romance, friendship, humor, sentiments, vengeance in a fitting manner".[93] R. S. Prakash from Bangalore Mirror wrote, "With a wafer-thin theme that appears to be a blend of Rajinikanth films like Baasha and Thalapathy, Lingusamy appears to have lost his touch in churning out an effective script and hence the film struggles to move steadily right from the start", although he gave the film a rating of 3.5 out of 5.[94] Bollywood Life gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and stated, "This Independence Day treat from Lingusamy-Suriya combo is a must watch as the film packs all the elements of commercial cinema into an intriguing story which will leave you satisfied while you leave your seats".[95]

Ramchander of Oneindia Entertainment gave 2.5 out of 5 and wrote, "Surya's Anjaan is lengthy and it is just an average movie in the end".[96] Indiaglitz wrote, "Anjaan would be in the list of movies that could have been etched better. Barring a few twists and turns, [it] does entertain Suriya fans to an extent and leaves out the rest" and called the film a "commercial entertainer [that] might not go beyond Suriya's fan base", while giving it 2.5 out of 5 stars.[97] Sify wrote, "Anjaan tries its best to be a mass masala entertainer but falls short, due to inherent weakness in the script and execution. To a large extent the film is salvaged by Suriya’s charisma and star power".[98]

M. Suganth of The Times of India gave 2 out of 5 and wrote, "When a film announces loud and clear all that it wants to do is be in service of its hero, and make him as larger than life as possible, we accept it and all that we expect from it is to entertain us. But when it takes almost three hours to narrate its story with predictable twists and underwritten characters in a non-engaging fashion, it becomes a painful watch. And, Anjaan is just that".[99] Behindwoods rated the film 2 out of 5 and concluded, "Suriya and Anjaan, [are] let down by the screenplay".[100] Haricharan Pudipeddi of IANS wrote, "It is high time Lingusamy, who is reluctant to change, accepts the fact that age-old formula doesn't work anymore", and rated the film 2 out of 5.[101] S. Saraswathi of Rediff gave 2 out of 5 stars and concluded, "Director Lingusamy's attempt to recreate Superstar's epic Baasha with good looking stars and technical brilliance fails miserably."[102]

Malini Mannath from The New Indian Express wrote, "The first thing that hits you as the movie unfolds is a sense of deja vu. The lazy screenplay and the amalgamation of incidents ripped from various films like Basha are a travesty. Suriya’s charismatic screen presence and the intensity with which he essays his role is the sole saving grace that holds the otherwise total-downer of a movie".[103] Baradwaj Rangan of The Hindu wrote, "This is a dull, dull movie. Lingusamy unleashes the technical arsenal and fractures the narrative and expects us to follow a trail of clues as if this were a twisty noir nail-biter, but it’s no use because the story has all the suspense of a housewife shopping for vegetables".[104] Gautaman Bhaskaran of Hindustan Times gave 1 out of 5 stars and wrote, "If director Lingusamy must understand that clichéd formulas like gangster dramas have limited appeal, actor Suriya must also realise that it's about time he quit playing Superman and got down to earthy roles".[105]

After receiving feedback regarding the length of the film, the film's co-producer, G. Dhananjayan announced that the team had removed about 6 minutes from the second half of the film and had also deleted the comedy scenes featuring Brahmanandam, but retained the scenes in the dubbed Telugu version.[106][107] Further information from trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai revealed that the running time had been reduced to 2 hours and 30 minutes and theatres had begun screening the re-edited version, where about 9 minutes from the first half and 11 minutes from the second half were cut.[108] Suriya defended the film, citing that there had been a lot of negativity surrounding the film and was hurt by the fact that people (who were yet to see the film) also started deriding the film. He further requested people to refrain from personal deriding of the film.[109][110] Actor Vivek, after watching the trimmed version of the film, reacted to the feedback regarding the film by stating that the film was "very sleek and entertaining". He also said that a film "should not be condemned without any due reasons" and insisted that the hard work of Anjaan's team should be appreciated.[111] Actor Vijay Sethupathi also supported the film tweeting that it was good and worth watching.[112]

Box Office

India

Anjaan had a "huge" opening at the box office,[113] with an occupancy of 90-95% in Chennai[114] The film reportedly made 11.5 crore (US$1.4 million) on its first day from Tamil Nadu alone[14] and collected about 14.5 crore (US$1.7 million) from the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka together.[115] From the Chennai region alone, it made 2.36 crore (US$280,000) in its first weekend,[116] outperforming Jilla, Veeram, Kochadaiiyaan and Velaiyilla Pattathari to set a new city record for the first weekend in 2014.[108] The Telugu dubbed version Sikander grossed 4 crore (US$480,000) on its opening day in AP/Nizam.[117] Sikander earned 5.45 crore (US$650,000) share in the AP/Nizam areas in its opening weekend.[118] Both versions together made 40 crore (US$4.8 million) domestic nett in the opening weekend.[119]

Sify declared the film a "below average" grosser in Chennai during its second week,[120] though it made about 3.93 crore (US$470,000) in 10 days.[121][122] The film was a major success in Kerala where distributors confirmed that it would continue to run in at least 50 major screens despite the release of Malayalam films for Onam.[123]

The film made 4.58 crore (US$550,000) in 17 days in Chennai and was declared an "average" grosser by Behindwoods.[124]
