The Eurovision Song Contest 2015 will be the 60th annual Eurovision Song Contest. The contest will take place in Austria, following Conchita Wurst's victory in the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, with the song "Rise Like a Phoenix". During the winner's press conference, an Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) representative stated that the host city could be Vienna, although official confirmation on the host city and venue have yet to be announced, with Graz and Innsbruck being the other two contenders for hosting the contest.[1][2] It was announced during the meeting of the Head of Delegations in 2014 that the dates for the two semi-finals are 12 May and 14 May 2015, with the final planned for the evening of 16 May 2015.[3][4][5] This will be the second time Austria is hosting the contest, the first time being in 1967. During a follow-up meeting between the host broadcaster ORF and the EBU, the representatives of the core organising team were selected. Edgar Böhm, who is the Head of Entertainment at ORF, was announced as being the executive producer.[6]

So far, twenty-one countries have confirmed their participation on the contest, with Cyprus returning after a one-year break.[7]

Bidding phase

After Austria's victory in the 2014 Contest, their delegation revealed the possibility of hosting the contest either in the capital city, Vienna, or in Salzburg.[1] Vienna, Klagenfurt, Innsbruck, Lower Austria, Graz, Upper Austria, Burgenland, and Vorarlberg are all reportedly interested in hosting the contest while Salzburg pulled out of the bidding phase as the city is not able to meet the cost of the venue and promotion.[8]

Vienna, the capital city and the considered front-runner in the race, has two venues in the phase: the Wiener Stadthalle which hosts the annual Erste Bank Open tennis tournament, along with many concerts and events throughout the year, and the trade fair centre, Messe Wien. These venues have capacities of up to 16,000 and 30,000 respectively. Also in the race are Stadthalle Graz and Schwarzl Freizeit Zentrum, both located in the second largest city of Austria, Graz. With a maximum capacity of 30,000, the Wörthersee Stadion, located in Klagenfurt, also joined the race of hosting the contest. However, the stadium would require the construction of a roof for the contest to be hosted there. Innsbruck also joined the race with Olympiahalle, the venue which hosted ice hockey and figure skating at the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. A fifth city, Linz, joined the race for hosting the contest with Brucknerhaus, although the venue is not big enough for the contest. Being geographically close to Linz, Wels showed desire to host the event as well.[9] Oberwart, with the Exhibition hall and Vorarlberg, with the Vorarlberger Landestheater were the latest cities to declare an interest.

On the 29 May 2014, host broadcaster for the 2015 contest ORF and the EBU released some requirements and details about the venue.[10][11] ORF requested interested parties to respond until 13 June 2014.[12] They stated that the venue needs to be available for at least 6 to 7 weeks before the contest and one week after the conclusion of the contest. The chosen venue must not be open-air, but an air-conditioned building with a capacity of at least 10,000 and a minimum ceiling height of 15 meters, that is insulated for sound and light. The Green Room should be located in the arena or as near it as possible, with a capacity of 300. An additional room that is at least 6,000 m2 that will house 2 catering stands, a viewing room, make-up rooms, wardrobe, and booths for approximately 50 commentators. Separate offices that must be open between the 11 and 24 May 2015, that are at least 4,000 m2 in space to house the press centre, with a capacity for at least 1,500 journalists.[10]

After the deadline ended on 13 June 2014 ORF announced 12 venues interested in hosting the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest:[13] ORF announced on 21 June 2014, that 3 cities (Vienna, Innsbruck, and Graz) have been short-listed in the final stage of the bidding process. The chosen city will be announced before August 2014.[14][15][16]

Format

The format of the 60th contest has not yet been confirmed. However, Jon Ola Sand has said that it will be something that will properly pay tribute to the anniversary of the contest.[18] On 10 July, the EBU announced that the deadline for countries to confirm their participation will change from mid-December to mid-October. The EBU and ORF decided to change the deadline due to the anniversary.[19]

In late 2011, it was announced by the EBU that they had begun archiving all the contests since 1956 with the results expected before the 2015 Contest.[20] It was later reported that the archive is ready and will be released on the 60th anniversary. The content will be available to journalists in broadcast-ready formats. Additionally, "selected content" of the archive will be accessible to the public through the official Eurovision website.[21]

Host

Conchita Wurst stated in an interview after winning the contest that she would like to host the Eurovision in 2015 if asked.[22] Andi Knoll, the Song Contest commentator for the Austrian broadcaster ORF, said in an interview with the Kurier that he is interested in hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2015.[23]

For a country to be eligible for potential participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, it needs to be an active member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).[52] The EBU have issued an invitation of participation for the 2015 Contest to all 56 active members.[52] So far twenty countries have confirmed their participation. Whilst a decision from the remaining invited EBU Active Members has yet to be announced, the following list of countries have announced their decisions.

  •  Andorra – The Andorran broadcaster Ràdio i Televisió d'Andorra (RTVA) has confirmed that Andorra will not return to the contest in 2015.[53]
  •  Bosnia and Herzegovina – Bosnia and Herzegovina's possible return in the 2015 contest may be in doubt due to the ongoing financial crisis.[54]
  •  Bulgaria – Despite withdrawing from the contest in 2014 due to financial difficulties, the production director at BNT Stanislav Terziev, has stated that the country is currently seeking sponsors to help fund a Bulgarian entry and hope to return to the contest in Austria in 2015.[55][56]
  •  Georgia – Since Georgia's jury votes in the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 were declared invalid, Georgia may be disqualified from the Song Contest for the following three years by the EBU.[57]
  •  Greece – On 12 May 2014 there were rumours that Greece was considering a withdrawal from the 2015 contest. However, Greek Broadcaster, NERIT denied the rumours on 13 May 2014, saying that the Greek team were really sad about the results and running order, but that did not mean they were considering withdrawing.   •  Israel – According to local sources, the Israeli government is planning to shut down the IBA channel in March 2015 and therefore they're likely to withdraw from the 2015 edition.[60][61] Şalom, a Jewish newspaper from Turkey announced that Yaakov Neve, who is a member of the Israeli Eurovision delegation, said that Israel will withdraw from the 2015 edition due to the failure to qualify for the finals since 2010.[62]
  •  Italy – Although it has yet to confirm its official participation in the 2015 contest,[63] the official RAI Eurovision Song Contest Italy page on Facebook reported: "Si va a Vienna 2015!" (Let's go to Vienna 2015!)".[64]
  •  Monaco - Despite rumours of their possible return in 2015, the Monegasque national broadcaster Télé Monte Carlo (TMC) has confirmed that Monaco will not be returning to the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest.[65]
  •  Serbia – In a press conference on 7 April 2014, head of press at RTS, Duška Vučinić, stated that RTS hope to send a representative in 2015 and continue Serbia's participation in the contest.[66]
  •  Slovakia – A representative of the broadcaster channel Radio and Television Slovakia (RTVS) stated that Slovakia will not participate in the 2015 contest due to a lack of sponsorship.[67][68]
  •  Turkey – Though TRT announced that Turkey would not be participating in the 2014 Contest for the second year in-a-row, it was later reported that a return in the 2015 Contest is possible.[69] In February 2014, the Eurovision event supervisor Sietse Bakker tweeted about the possibility of the country's return.[70] Despite the rumours of the country's return, Volkan Bozkır, a member of Turkish parliament from the conservative government party AKP, reported during a press conference that Turkey will no longer participate in the contest.[71] According to the EBU and a German news site, state broadcaster TRT has not confirmed their non-participation in Austria.[72]
