Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics characters Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman and will be co-produced by Dune Entertainment and Syncopy Films, distributed by Warner Bros.[2] It is the intended sequel to 2013's Man of Steel and the second installment in the DC Cinematic Universe. The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer, which stars Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.[3] Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, and Holly Hunter join the cast along with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane.[4]

The sequel was announced at 2013 San Diego Comic Con International, after the release of Man of Steel. Snyder and Goyer were both brought back in June 2013. Pre-production began at East Los Angeles College on October 19, 2013.[5]

Dawn of Justice is scheduled for a worldwide release on May 6, 2016.[6]

Cast

  • Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman: A billionaire turned crime fighter.[10] Josh Brolin had been in discussions for the role prior to Affleck's casting.[11] In an interview, director Zack Snyder stated that, "Ben provides an interesting counterbalance to Henry's Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne."[10] Affleck's casting as Batman was the subject of media controversy,[12] including outcry by fans for Warner Bros. to remove Affleck from the role.[13] He himself was initially reluctant to accept the role, feeling that he "didn’t fit the traditional mold. But once Zack showed me the concept, and that it would be both different from the great movies that Chris [Nolan] and Christian [Bale] made, but still in keeping with tradition, I was excited."[14]
  • Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor: Snyder described the casting of Eisenberg as Luthor by stating, "Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions."[16][17]

Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey and Tao Okamoto were cast in unspecified roles.[18] On April 24, 2014, theater actor Ray Fisher had been cast as Victor Stone / Cyborg in a minor role.[19]

Production

Development

In June 2013, it was announced that director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer would both be returning for a Man of Steel sequel, which is being fast tracked by Warner Bros. Goyer had previously signed a three-film deal, which includes Man of Steel, its sequel, and a Justice League film featuring Superman. Christopher Nolan has announced he will be attached as executive producer, while composer Hans Zimmer is set to return to score the sequel.[20] Later in the month, the studio was considering a 2014 release for the film.[21]

In July 2013, Zack Snyder confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con International that the sequel to Man of Steel in 2015 will have Superman and Batman meeting for the first time in a cinematic format. Goyer and Snyder will co-write the story, with Goyer writing the script. Cavill, Adams, Lane, and Fishburne will reprise their roles.[8][22] Snyder stated that the film would take inspiration from the comic The Dark Knight Returns.[23] However, in November 2013, Snyder clarified that the film would not be based on the graphic novel. "If you were going to do that, you would need a different Superman. We’re bringing Batman into the universe that now this Superman lives in."[24] Goyer stated at the Superman 75th Anniversary Panel at Comic-Con, that Superman and Batman will face off, and titles under consideration were Superman vs Batman or Batman vs Superman.[25] The production will film in Toronto, Ontario, rather than Vancouver as Man of Steel did.[26]

In January 2014, it was announced that the film had been delayed from its original July 17, 2015 release date to May 6, 2016, in order to give the filmmakers "time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story".[27] In April 2014, Hans Zimmer confirmed that he would return to compose the sequel's score.[28] The film's official title was announced on May 21, 2014, following the beginning of principal photography.[29] Prior to this, it was widely referred to in the media as simply Batman vs. Superman.[25][16][15] In December 2013, Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio was hired to rewrite the script, due to Goyer's commitments in other projects.[30]

Filming

In September 2013, Larry Fong joined the crew as cinematographer after previously having worked with Zack Snyder in 300, Watchmen and Sucker Punch.[31] Initial filming commenced on October 19, 2013, at East Los Angeles College to shoot a football game between Gotham City University and rival Metropolis State University.[32] At the end of the month, construction began on the Kent farm seen in Man of Steel for the film.[33]

In March 2014, the Illinois Film Office revealed that additional filming will take place in the Yorkville, Illinois area in late 2014.[34] The principal photography involving the main cast of the film began on May 19, 2014 in Detroit, Michigan,[35][36] with scenes featuring Gal Gadot being filmed early on May 16.[37] Additional filming locations include the Michigan Motion Picture Studios, Illinois, Africa, and the South Pacific.[1]

Design
