The Maan massacre was an alleged massacre in the village of Ma'an, Syria on 9 February, 2014. 21 Alawite civilians were killed according to the SOHR, during the capture of the village by rebels. 20 pro-government militiamen were also reportedly killed in the attack. Syrian state media described the attack as a massacre.[1][2][3] SANA claimed most of the killed were women, elderly and children. They put the death toll at 42 civilians whereas the SOHR said 25 people were killed, mostly fighters.[4] The Nusra Front denied they took part in the attack, claiming another group was behind it.[5] A spokesman of the UN expressed "great shock" over the massacre.[6] The Syrian Coalition stressed that “the battalions liberated the village of Ma’an in rural Hama to protect civilians and ensure their safety.
