=== Sizing ===
<!--- Unlike traditional footwear, Vibram FiveFingers do not follow the typical US or UK shoe-sizing scales.{{fact|date=December 2013}} They require precise foot length measurement with accuracy down to 1/8" and conversion to the FiveFingers sizing chart. This ranges from 38-50 for men, 34-42 for women, and 29-36 for children. As a result, the shoe sizing more closely mirrors the EU system. However, minor discrepancies exist between the women's and men's sizing, so (for example) a 39 women's does not equal a 39 men's. <ref>"Size Conversion Chart." www.vibramfivefingers.com. Vibram, n.d. === Materials ===
<!--- Vibram FiveFingers comprise many different materials that vary depending on the style of shoe. The most common components are Vibram TC-1 performance rubber, which makes up the sole of these shoes, a thin stretch polyamide comprising the frame of the shoe that molds to the contours of the user's foot, and an antimicrobial microfiber footbed. --->

Xero Shoes are a type and brand of minimalist shoe manufactured by Feel the World Inc. in Boulder, Colorado, marketed as a more natural alternative for running. The footwear is meant to replicate being barefoot and has thin, flexible soles that are contoured to the shape of the human foot.

Background

In the latter half of the 20th century, there has been much scientific and medical interest in the benefits involved in barefoot running. The 1970s saw a resurgent interest in jogging in western countries and modern running shoes were developed and marketed.[3] Since then, modern high-technology running shoes have often been blamed for the increased incidence of running injuries and many runners have switched to barefoot running for relief from chronic injuries.[4] However, the American Podiatric Medical Association cautions would-be barefoot runners, stating that there is still not enough research on the immediate and long-term benefits of the practice.[5] Additionally, individuals with diabetes or other conditions which affect sensation within the feet are at greater risk of injury and are advised not to run barefoot.[6]

The alternative to going barefoot is to wear thin shoes with minimal padding. This is what people wore for thousands of years before the 1980s when the "modern running shoe" was invented. These permit a similar gait as barefoot, but protect the feet from cuts, abrasion and soft sticky matter.[7] This theory, and the development of modern materials, has lead some modern shoe manufacturers to design footwear to mimic the barefoot running experience, maintaining optimum flexibility and natural walking while also providing some degree of protection.[8] Sales of minimalist running shoes have since grown into a $1.7 billion industry, with the market growing 303% from November 2010 through November 2012.[9][10]
