Arrambam (Template:Lang-en) is an upcoming Indian Tamil action thriller film directed by Vishnuvardhan. Produced by A. Raghuram, the film will feature Ajith Kumar, Arya, Nayantara and Taapsee Pannu playing lead roles. The film is in post production stage and will be released on Diwali 2013.[2] The film's title was not revealed until the post production of the film. A teaser also released without the title and became popular on YouTube.[3]

Cast

Production

In September 2011, producer A. M. Rathnam stated that he was working in a project with Ajith Kumar.[4] Ajith will be possessing salt and pepper look from Mankatha and also hitting gym to build body in a good shape.[5] Vishnuvardhan in an interview opened up about the film that "I am planning to work on a drama, more on family action drama."[6]

The film was initially reported to be titled as Surangani,[7] but was in January 2013 stated by "A source in the know" to be Valai.[8][9] Although not officially confirmed, the film was henceforth referred to as Valai by the media. Vishnuvardhan, who was at Anna University’s Gateway 2013 Short Film Festival by the Department of Media Sciences revealed that that the film was not titled Valai, adding that two titles were under consideration.[10] The films title was not revealed until the post production of the film. A teaser was also released without the title and became a popular video on YouTube.[3]

Casting

Nayantara was named as the female lead.[11] Next Vishnuvardhan approached Arya for another lead role.[12] Yuvan Shankar Raja is scoring the music for the film.[13] Richa Gangopadhyay was initially considered for the second female lead.[14] Later Taapsee Pannu was selected for her role.[15] It is also reported that Arvind Swamy and Prithviraj Sukumaran will play pivotal roles[16] and Telugu actors Akkineni Nagarjuna, Ravi Teja and Jagapathi Babu will have cameo appearances in the film.[17][18] Mahesh Manjrekar will be essaying the role of a villain in the film.[19] Suman Ranganathan has been cast role of a reporter.[20] Furthermore, the director approached Rana Daggubati for an important role in this film.[21] Rana Daggubati will do a "special appearance".[22] Rana took part in the shooting in Mumbai.[23] Kishore would enact an Anti-terrorist squad member, claimed to be a prominent role in the film.[24] Akshara Gowda stated that she was also part of the film.[25] Prashant Nair informed that he had a small role in Valai.[26]

Stephen Richter will be working stunts in this film.[27] Sunil Babu was initially called in as the art director but opted out later, with Ilaiyaraja taking his place.[28] P. S. Vinod was replaced by Om Prakash as cinematographer.[29] Vishnuvardhan's wife Anu Vardhan, who had worked on all of her husband's film, was in charge of costume designing in this film as well.[30]

Filming

Vishnuvardhan said that Ajith Kumar will have a "salt and pepper" look, and that Ajith Kumar underwent supervised weight-training.[5] Vishnuvardhan stated that he was "planning to work on a family action drama."[6] Production of the film began on Chennai on 31 May 2012.[31] The first schedule of filming began on 2 June 2012 with portions involving Ajith Kumar, Nayantara and Arya. The filming was expected to proceed until the end of the month in Mumbai,[32] but later cancelled due to monsoon and location was shifted to Bangalore[33] and later in Hyderabad.[34] On 7 September, during the second schedule, Taapsee Pannu joined the crew and began shooting her portions.[35] During the next schedule that started on 2 November 2012, filming was held in Mumbai and its suburban locations.[36] While shooting an action sequence, Ajith Kumar was injured, suffering an ligament tear.[37] Despite his injuries, Ajith Kumar continued shooting.[37]

The team returned to Mumbai a third time for a 15-day schedule on 1 January 2013, with scenes involving Arya, Nayantara and Taapsee being filmed in the Bandra area of Mumbai in the first week and Ajith Kumar's part in the latter part of the schedule.[38] Ajith filmed a boat sequence for the film in an Arab country, which was choreographed by Hollywood stuntman Lee Whittaker. After finishing the boat scene, he tweeted, "Finished amazing boat sequence here in Dubai! Ajith was absolutely amazing! Couldn't have done it without his skills!"[39] In March 2013, Ajith, Arya and Nayantara shot a holi song featuring both Tamil and Hindi lyrics at a studio in Mumbai,[40] which was choreographed by Dinesh.[41] The crew will be shooting the last schedule in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan from 1 May onwards,[42][43] after which the unit will move to Orissa, where a song and a few scenes will be shot.[44]

Soundtrack

Yuvan Shankar Raja was signed on to compose the film's soundtrack and score, continuing his association with director Vishnuvardhan and actor Ajith Kumar. The soundtrack album consists of five tracks. Pa. Vijay penned the lyrics for all songs. It was released directly to stores on 19 September 2013 and opened at number one on iTunes India within a few minutes after its release at midnight,[45][46] which, according to Sify, "no Tamil album has done before".[47] It also received positive reviews from critics.[48][49]

Marketing

The films title was not revealed until the post production of the film. A teaser was also released without the title and became a popular video on YouTube.[3] On 1 May 2013, coinciding with Ajith Kumar's birthday, a 42-second teaser trailer was uploaded on YouTube, which indicated that the film was untitled.[50] The teaser crossed 1 million hits within 2 days' time.[51] The teaser became viral on YouTube breaking previous records of Tamil cinema except Why This Kolaveri Di.[3]

For the first time, the making videos of the film were telecast on Jaya TV on 15 August 2013. The official logo design of Arrambam was also revealed at the program.[52]

The film's theatrical trailer was released along with the music album on 19 September 2013. The 1min 50sec video faced a massive response and reached the 1 million hits mark on YouTube within two days.[53]

Controversy

Film producer K. Kannan filed a suit in the City Civil Court on 29 October 2013, seeking to restrain the release of Arrambam. In the suit, he claimed that he had already commenced the production of a film titled Ini Dhan Arambam, and its title had been registered with Film and Television Producers Guild of South of India.[54]
