Yuvna Kim Currun, known as ‘Yuvna Kim’, was born in the heart of the Indian Ocean, on the island of Mauritius on October 17, 1984. Her cultural heritage has always been a bit of a mystery in the fashion industry as she fused well in a number of cultures since Mauritius involves the blending of several cultures from its history, as well as individual culture arising indigenously. The country's populace is composed of several ethnicities, mostly people of Indian, African, Chinese and European descent- a good mix of both the east and the west. This has impacted on her style and her outlook on fashion and the designs she creates.

Early life

Kim is the eldest daughter of English Literature teacher, Devendra Kim Currun (ex Member of the Parliament, also known as one of the ‘Amsterdam Boys’ in the Amsterdam Affair 1985), and Vinitta Kim Currun who raised Kim and her sister Diksha Kim Currun in the town of Vacoas-Phoenix, in the Plaines William District of Mauritius Island.

At the age of five Kim's attention had already turned to fashion. She used to cut patterns out of newspaper along with her grandmother Sajubai, a respected dressmaker, who is still renowned for her Bridal Trousseaux.

Kim was also very influenced by her aunt Shashi Babooram, an artist, with whom Kim spent most of her school holidays. It was her aunt who taught her the art of glass painting, canvas work and satin, silk and ribbon rose making.

Education

Kim comes from a long line of teachers and scholars, but she struggled a lot in her early academic years due to dyslexia, a brain-based type of learning disability. Home schooling and private tuitions became a dominate part of Kim's childhood.

In 1996 Kim joined Hindu Girls' College, Curepipe, Mauritius, where she studied various forms of performing and visual arts.

In 2002 Kim joined the Faculty of Law at University College of London, and later graduated with Honours in Law. She pursued a brief career in the legal professions.

Kim joined fashion school in 2007, where she completed for Bachelor's degree in Fashion and Master's degree in Textiles.

While studying fashion, Yuvna Kim also pursued part-time media studies with the Open University.

Career

Kim has been a model and actress.[citation needed] Currently Kim is the face of Sony Television Asia and hosts the fashion segment on SNAPSHOT. She explores the glamorous life of Fashion in the UK and abroad.

Kim was spotted and recruited at the age of 14 by Ms Soraya Currimjee, the owner of Haseena Modelling Academy. There on Yuvna Kim was a popular face occupying the ramp at the IVTB School of design and occupied the billboards for countless advertising campaigns.

As a model Kim won the ModelSearch UK 2002 and was recruited in the same year by Sandra Reynolds. She was assigned several contacts with High Street Designers Dorothy Perking, New Look and Top Shop. Kim also modelled for L’Oreal Id Artist Darren Reed, for the L’Oreal ID Campaign in 2009.

Kim has made a substantial mark on the Asian Fashion Industry.[citation needed] She has worked for prominent designers such as Arinder Bullar, Anjalee Arjun Kapoor, Gul Ahmed, R.C.K.C, Anokhi, Swapnil Sindhe, Kamia Rokni,Hassan Sheheryar Yasin (HSY), Anshu Jason, celebrity designer Manish Malhotra and legendary designer Satya Paul among others.

Kim debuted her television career with Zee TV in 2008 with her Mid-Morning Show Brits Bollywood on Zee Music. She has graced a number of shows including Zee Carnival in 2008 and 2009, The Ideal Home Show 2009 and 2010, IAFA Awards 2010, Asian Achievers Awards 2011, Eros International Premiere including R.A One Premiere, Rockstar in 2011, and the Political & Public Life Awards 2012 at the House of Commons.

In 2012, Kim launched her London-based fashion label Yuvna Kim London Ltd. Her atelier specializes in bridal couture making wedding dresses and gowns using rich fabrics, lace, detailed embroidery, pearls, crystals and silk threads.

Kim's style is a unique fusion of western and eastern culture. Yuvna Kim London designs are linked to tradition as well as providing a method to create individual style, influenced by family histories of migration and wider patterns of cross-cultural influence.[citation needed]
