Biography

In Berlin on 11 October 1472, eight-years-old Barbara married Duke Henry XI of Głogów, around thirty years her senior. In the the marriage contract was stipulated that, in case of the Duke's death without issue, all his lands were passed to his wife, with reversion to her family. Four years later, on 22 February 1476, Hendy IX died suddenly, probably poisoned by Brandenburg agents. This death leave the twelve-years-old Barbara as the sovereign Duchess of Głogów, but a long succession war erupted. Henry IX's closest male relative, his cousin Jan II the Mad, former Duke of Żagań, claimed the whole inheritance, but he had to faced not only the pretentions of the Elector of Brandenburg but also the intervention of Kings Matthias Corvinus of Hungary and Vladislav II of Bohemia.

At the end of succession dispute, Barbara -who counted with the support of the Głogów states-, after the violent dispute with Jan II the Mad, finally obtained the Duchy of Crossen, with the towns of Bobrowice, Sulechów and Lubsko pledged to the Electorate of Brandenburg against Barbara's dowry, a sum of 50,000 florins.

In the same year, Barbara married the future King of Bohemia and Hungary; Vladislaus. They were married in Frankfurt, the bride was twelve and the groom was twenty.

Vladislaus was proposed for the Bohemian throne by the widow of the previous king, George of Podebrady, and was crowned with Barbara as the King and Queen of Bohemia on 22 August 1471. They were crowned as King and Queen of Hungary on 18 September 1490, in succession to Matthias Corvinus, who had also claimed the Bohemian throne. No regnal number was used by Vladislaus at the time, but works of reference retrospectively assigned him various ordinals for each of his kingdoms. The most usual number is II, though he was also the seventh Ladislas (VII) on the Hungarian throne and the fifth Vladislav (V) on the Bohemian throne.

The marriage was childless; Vladislaus had no legitimate children. Desperate for an heir, Vladislaus divorced Barbara, he married again to Matthias' widow, Beatrice of Naples. After her death, Vladislaus married Anne de Foix who gave birth to Vladislaus' only legitimate children, Louis II of Hungary and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary.
