Nabiha Bensouda (born 1987) is a Danish singer-songwriter who has gained attention after releasing two albums and enjoying a number of successful singles on Tracklisten, the official Danish Singles chart as well as reaching no 1 on the official Airplay chart with 2 singles and on all online shops.
Early life
Bensouda was born and raised in the Vesterbro area of Copenhagen, Denmark, to a family with both Danish and north-west African roots, specifically Gambia, Mali and Morocco. Bensouda is the eldest child of three. Nabiha grew up listening to a variety of genres of music, from her mother’s Malian lullabies to disco, soul, reggae, rock, R’n’B, and electronic.
Career
Bensouda’s first album released in Denmark on February 1, 2010 on iTunes and in stores. Bensouda co-wrote all of the songs on the album together with her London-based Swedish producer/writer, Carl Ryden produced the album. Some songs also included collaborations with songwriters Nina Woodford, Cozi Costi and Terri Walker. Most of the album is mixed by Jeremy Wheatley, except 5 songs which are mixed by Carl Ryden, Kevin KD Davis and Peo Haggstrom. Bensouda was from the beginning developed and A&R'd by her manager Mette Buhl, who continues to A&R Bensouda.
”Deep Sleep”, the first single from the album peaked as 4 on Danish Tracklisten Singles Chart and was certified gold. Bensouda has already played a number of large venues including opening for James Morrison at Falconer Theatre in Copenhagen and playing at the Danish National Football stadium.
Nabiha was a support act for Rasmus Seebach on a sold out tour. She also toured with James Morrison concert in Copenhagen, Jason Derulo's and Jamie Cullum's German tours. In February 2011 Nabiha toured all over Denmark with marked success.
2011 saw Nabiha change label to Sony Music, and in September 2011 Nabiha released the new international edit of her debut album now called More Cracks and included four new songs; "Never Played the Bass", "Sound of My Gun", "Can't Do Anything" and "Trouble" which went into high rotation on Danish radio stations. "Never Played the Bass" was very popular in urban, club and airplay charts and reached number 4 on Tracklisten and was certified gold. It was number one for 4 weeks in the Hungarian Singles Chart.
2012 Nabiha participated in the reality show Toppen af Poppen together with six other established artists, where each one had to do their own interpolation of the one of other participants songs on the show. Nabiha did a interpolation of "Det' passer" and "Vodoo" among others. She also toured US with shows in Los Angeles and New York. Nabiha had more than 14 syncs in the States, on shows such as; Mobwives, Basketball Wives of LA, Basketball Wives, SMASH, SoapTV and many more on the local Danish scene.
2012 also saw Nabiha's singles "Mind the Gap" and "Never played the bass" reaching no. 1 on Danish Airplay, as well as both being in the top 10 of teh yearly most played songs on Danish Radio. That even "Mind the gap" was released end of 2012.
2012-2013 "Never played the bass" reached no. 1 on Danish Itunes, TDC play, the 2 biggest music shops in Denmark. It went no. 2 on the UK Urban Chart, no. 1 on US Billboard Break Out Chart, no. 37 on US Billboard Dance Chart. No. 1 on Itunes in Hungary, No. 1 on the Dance Chart in Hungary, no. 1 on Airplay in Hungary, no. 1 on The Voice Airplay Bulgaria and stayed in top 40 and 50 for more than 8 weeks in Sweden and Italy on all Charts.
"Mind the gap" went to no. 1 on Danish Itunes, TDC Play, TDC Streaming, TDC Download, no. 2 in Hungary on Sales. It will be released in 17 Countries across the world.
"Mind the gap" album went to no. 1 on the Danish BIT Chart - the most official downloaded albums.
Newest single "Ask yourself" went to no. 2 on Danish Airplay.
Nabiha started the year with headlining 11 concerts across Denmark. She is confirmed to do 24 Festival shows and another 18 concerts in Denmark as well as to do shows and tours in Germany, Hungary, Holland, Finland, Belgium, US and UK.
