Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya (English: Boy, wish to eat Laddu?) is a 2013 Tamil comedy film directed by Manikandan. It stars Santhanam, Srinivasan, Sethu and Vishaka in the lead roles. The film is the maiden production of Santhanam, who makes the film along with Rama Narayanan while S. Thaman scores the film's music. The plot revolves around the three friends who fall for the same girl, who has just moved into their locality and they are forced into a game of one-upmanship to win over the girl. The movie released on 13 January 2013, to positive reviews from both critics and audiences.

Plot

The film is about three friends who fall for the same girl. The three friends Kaliyaperumal (Santhanam), Power Kumar (Srinivasan) and Shiva (Sethu) have no job other than getting drunk and chasing girls. A pretty girl named Sowmiya (Vishaka) gets relocated with family to the opposite house of Shiva. They three fall for the girls beauty and makes a gentleman agreement leaving the decision of the girls choice to choose her lover. To impress her, the three attempts three different methods. Shiva helps Sowmiya's aunt (Kovai Sarala) in kitchen works; Kaliyaperumal joins Sowmiya's uncle (Ganesh) to learn singing; Power joins Sowmiya's father (Shivshankar) to learn Bharathanatiyam. One day, when none of Sowmiya's family is home, the three men eventually propose their love, leaving Sowmiya confused. Through the advice of her neighbour (Devadarshini), Sowmiya tells the three that she loves actor Simbu. The three then decide to bring Simbhu as a gift for Sowmiya's birthday, but Simbhu says he does not know anyone named Sowmiya. They then hire a thug named "Kolaveri" David to kidnap Simbhu, but he kidnaps Sowmiya instead. After Simbhu refuses to help, Shiva, KK and Power go and save Sowmiya from David, and she falls in love with shiva, because Power and KK had earlier beaten Sowmiya's uncle and father severely.

Production

Lawsuit about storyline credit

Prior to release, filmmaker K. Bhagyaraj filed a suit against the film. He stated that Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya used the same storyline as his earlier film Indru Poi Naalai Vaa. He also accused the makers of the film of not acquiring due permission to do so, and falsely claiming to have acquired the rights of his film. It was later announced that the film, upon orders of a high court, would carry a card in its title sequence, giving credit to both Bhagyaraj and his story of Indru Poi Naalai Vaa.

The music was composed by S. Thaman. The audio was released in 10 December 2012. The notable guests of the audio function were director Shankar, Simbu, actor-producer Udhayanidhi Stalin and director Rajesh to name a few. Musicperk.com rated the album 7/10 stating, "The composer Thaman has done a credible job to make sure the album’s genre is met with properly".

Release

Critical Reception

Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya opened to mostly positive reviews. Vivek Ramz from in.com rated it 3.5/5 and stated that KLTA is a perfect Pongal treat for the family thanks to its clean humour. Go watch it and have a blast! N. Venkateswaran from The Times of India gave 3.5/5 and said "Manikandan has now carved out a name for himself in the Tamil film industry by giving a huge hit with his first movie itself" MovieCrow gave 3 stars and said that "You can have fun while it lasts. Don't go with high expectations and you will not be let down." Sify gave 3 stars and said, "Gags galore, Laughs. This one’s strictly for Kollywood junkies whose funny bones are easy to tickle", and called the film a "Jolly fun ride". Oneindia.in said "Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya is a fun ride." In contrast, Behindwoods rated the film 2.5 out of 5, but said, "Replete with humor, KLTA offers what it is set out for-gives an unabashed hilarious 140 minutes for the viewer." and gave the verdict "An enjoyable fun ride for the festive season, go for it, you won’t regret!".

Box office

The film took a big opening and collected ₹ 6, 80,65,560 in the first three days of release, in Tamil Nadu alone.

Sequel

Shortly after the film's release, a sequel was reported to have been planned. Lead actor Srinivasan has also expressed interest in doing one.
