Development

In mid-August 2011, Vishal confirmed that his next project after Vedi would be a film to be directed by Thiru, with whom he had collaborated in Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai before.[2] He went on to add that the same technical crew of Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai, including its music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, would be retained for the film,[3] and that it would be completed within four months.[4] The film was titled as Samaran in the first September week,[5] and was reported to be an action adventure film,[6] with Vishal playing a "forest trekker".[7]

Casting

Trisha Krishnan, who had previously declined four of Vishal's films -Sathyam, Thoranai, Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai and Vedi [4][8]— was signed as the female lead few days later.[9] It was widely reported that Arvind Swamy had agreed to essay a negative character in the film,[10][11] however Thiru informed that Arvind Samy was considered but never approached, adding that it was not a negative character either.[12] Arvind Swamy later clarified that he was not going to make a comeback,[13] and Prakash Raj was roped in for that character.[14] Sneha Ullal was supposed to play a prominent role in the film,[15] which was eventually bagged by Sunaina.[16] As the filming became delayed by a month, Prakash Raj opted out of the project and was subsequently replaced by Manoj Bajpai, while J. D. Chakravarthy was recruited to play another pivotal role.[17]

Filming

The film would be filmed in the forests of Chalakudy, Kerala while few portions are planned to be shot in China.[6][18] First schedule of the film has been wrapped. Most of the scenes from schedule one was canned in Ooty and featured only Vishal and Sunaina.[19] The team left for Thailand on December 20, 2011 for a nonstop 50 day schedule, following which the last schedule will be in famous locales of Europe and includes an action sequence in there as well.[20]

Controversy

The movie ran into legal troubles over the title. A producer named Vijay has brought an interim injunction over the usage of the title, Samar. In his plea, he has claimed that the makers of Vishal Krishna's movie had no right to use the name, as he registered the same last year for his upcoming movie. He has said that the Samar title is registered in his name at the Film and TV Producers Association and the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce. He has renewed the same this year for his forthcoming venture. On hearing this, the court ordered an interim injunction on Vishal starrer Samar and has given deadline till August 31 to reply.[21] It was later confirmed that the title issue has been resolved. Director Thiru clarified that they won the title tussel in the Madurai court.[22]

In December 2012, producer and distributor Malaysia Pandian filed a complaint with the Producers' Council against producer T Ramesh, claiming that he had not yet received the 2% commission that he had entitled to for helping him sell the overseas rights of the film.[23]

Soundtrack is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja collaborating with director Thiru for second time and Vishal for sixth time. Audio was released in 4th December 2012 at Prasad Labs. Na. Muthukumar and Adhityan were present at the event, among other media personalities. Yuvan Shankar Raja was in Kuala Lumpur, mastering the sound for the film, and hence couldn’t attend the event. Trisha and Sunaina too missed the event as they were busy with their current projects[24].

Critical reception

Musicperk.com rated the album 6.5/10 quoting "This album is a treat for Yuvan fans". [26]Milliblog wrote:"Samar is proof that Yuvan can doze off while composing"[27]. Behindwoods wrote:"The album on the whole is a collection of new sounds, that are dark and sometimes jarring, and generic tunes that lack the spark that Yuvan showed with his earlier releases"[28].

Distribution

Five clours Multi Media bagged the Telugu rights of this film.[29]

Release

Earlier the film was planned to release on 28 December, but due to "severe financial problems" it was later postponed to January 2013, to release on Pongal day.[30] The film will be releasing alongside another Vishal-starrer Madha Gaja Raja.[31]
