Development

The film is inspired from novel Red Tea written by Paul Harris Daniel. The real suffering of Plantation workers in southern India is reflected in this novel. The author worked in the Tea estate in those period and experienced the workers pain.Earlier times the management kept the workers as slaves. Therefore bala opted for the title Paradesi .

Casting

Adharvaa is reported to play the son’s role and Bala had asked him to shed 10 kilos.[7] Amy Jackson was said to be playing the lead role but she denied and said that she wasn't approached for the role.[8] Bala has roped in about 200 junior artistes for this film and had them all go bald. He wants all these junior artistes to stay bald throughout the 200-day schedule as it is one of the major requirements for the film.[9] Vedhika was signed to act opposite Atharva in this family drama.[10] Impressed by Uma Riyaz's performance in Mouna Guru, Bala has asked the actress to play Adharvaa's mother in this movie.[11] Pooja Umashankar was originally selected to play a crucial role in this movie,[12] but she could not act due to call-sheet problems. Later Dhansika bagged that role.[13]

Filming

First schedule of the film has been completed on 28 January 2012 on Ramanathapuram and the team is getting ready to start the next schedule in Connoor.[14] However, with the tiff between the FEFSI and Producers’ Council still going on, the director has decided to postpone the shooting schedules until the issue is resolved.[15] The film was shot in Salur and Manamadurai in Sivagangai district, Munnar and Talaiyar in Kerala, and the forest areas in Theni district.[16] To get her act right in the climax scene, Dhansika survived with mere water and fruit juice for four consecutive days.[17] The film that was wrapped in just 90 days had released its first look poster on 8 August 2012.[6]

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar. The audio launch and trailer release of the film happened on November 25, 2012 at Sathyam cinemas, Chennai.[18] Vairamuthu joined hands with director Bala for the first time in this film. The visuals have been shot and music has already been composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar. Vairamuthu wrote the lyrics based on what has been shot and composed.[19]
