Agecroft Cemetery was opened as Salford Northern Cemetery by Salford City Council on 2 July 1903 with 45 acres (18.2 hectares) of burial ground, as the existing cemetery at Weast was near to capacity. At that time the cemetery, lying in the Irwell valley alongside the river at Pendlebury, was actually outside the city limits but is now within since the merging of Pendlebury into Salford. Since it was opened more than 53,700 interments have been carried out, including 160 burials of war dead. The original non-conformist chapel was converted to a crematorium in January 1957 which since then has handled nearly 60,000 cremation services. The crematorium chapel can hold up to 60 mourners.
