Series chronology

The 26th series of The Bill, a British television drama, was the last series of the programme. Nearly two years after the final episode, Supt. Jack Meadows was featured in an episode of SOKO Leipzig, which involved him investigating a suspected murderer who has been living in London. In the episode it is revealed that some point during the year and a half following the events of Respect, Meadows has retired.

The case takes a further twist when the man identified as the attacker claims he was acting in self-defence.

Newly promoted Smithy urges caution, but Stevie puts herself in danger after the downtrodden husband sets out for revenge - carrying a gun.

A child abandoned in a busy market alerts Roger, Millie and Grace to the fact his nanny has been abducted and badly beaten in what turns out to be a case of mistaken identity. Neil recognises the intended target as a psychiatrist he worked with on a previous case in which a mental health patient in her care was shot dead on his orders - so their reunion is less than cordial.

When psychiatrist Julia Bickham's partner is injured in a hit-and-run incident and her nanny is attacked in what turns out to be a case of mistaken identity, Neil and Grace investigate the possibility somebody holds a grudge against her. Among the suspects is a man whose wife died two years previously from an overdose. On the strength of Julia's professional testimony that it was a case of suicide, the man lost his life assurance claim and subsequently custody of his daughter.

Banksy renews acquaintance with the Sissoulu family after a telephone used to tip off the police about a murder is traced back to grieving father Joseph, whose son Danny was recently killed in a similar manner. The dead teenager's friends are reluctant to say much, but suspicion falls on Mo Campbell when his prints are found in the newsagent's shop. Further investigation, however, puts the informant in the frame for both murders.

Neil and Max investigate the murder of a 17-year-old girl, shot through the heart, who had recently left foster care to live alone. Relations between the detectives are strained when Max makes a disparaging remark about kids placed in care at the children's home, and Neil is left trying to regain their trust in order to find the killer. However, the case takes an unexpected twist when the prime suspect for the shooting turns out to be the partner of the victim's drug-using mother.

After Max and Jo lead a raid on the home of a young married couple, Paul Brewer is arrested for having indecent images of their four-year-old girl on his laptop. He claims to have lent his computer to convicted paedophile George Fielding, whom he met in prison. When questioned, Fielding admits to downloading the pictures, but tests prove they were taken by camera and were not from the internet. Banksy and Max are left to sort out which of the pair is covering for the other.

Following days of surveillance, Max and Jo raid the house of mule Jimmy Mack, aware that he has just received £40,000 worth of heroin. However, the officers are frustrated when they fail to uncover the bulk of the drugs or Jimmy’s missing girlfriend, Rochelle Chapman. Elsewhere, Sally and Roger are called to the home of former prostitute and drug addict Fran Morris, where her young son Noah has collapsed after having taken some unknown tablets found next to him.

Max and Jo are called to an incident at the home of the informant, and discover that she is suffering from serious head injuries after a savage beating. Convinced that the drug dealer she helped setup, Tucker, is behind the attack, Max decides to visit Tucker in jail. However, he is wound up as Tucker taunts him about failing two people under his care. Max feels sure Tucker is behind Fran's assault and her son's disappearance, suspecting the attack and abduction has been arranged by proxy.

A distressed seventeen-year-old is found traumatised by years of prolonged abuse, after being kidnapped by a mystery man named Gareth. Stevie struggles to establish his identity after the lad's sister fails to recognise him. Max re-examines the evidence from the disappearance of a twelve-year-old boy five years previously, hoping to make a connection with someone called Gareth, and despite discovering his identity as Gareth Harthill, it soon becomes clear the troubled young man at the station is not telling the whole story.

When an eight-year-old is abducted from outside his school, Terry is appointed family liaison officer, and finds himself keeping the peace between the boy's divorcing parents. CCTV footage reveals the child got into a car with a man after taking a phone call, and the race is on to discover the identities of the mystery caller and the driver. His father, however, soon becomes prime suspect when further CCTV footage shows sightings of him outside the primary school with the mystery man.

Leon disturbs an observation mounted by Max and Terry, when he gets involved in an altercation with the target. He discovers that his prison officer friend is reluctantly caught up in a plot to smuggle a telephone into Long Marsh prison for a drug dealer. The constable persuades her to go ahead with the plan - despite the risks to herself and her young son - and deliver a bugged phone so CID can continue their surveillance of the gangster, but it soon becomes clear the villain has murder in mind.

A frantic mother reports her car has been stolen with her baby still strapped inside. The suspect is soon traced, but the child is not recovered until later when her father, following an alleged tip-off, leads Roger and Mel to an alleyway where she is found distressed and badly bruised, still strapped in her car seat. Leon is not convinced the injuries are a result of her recent adventure, and suspects the infant has been abused - but leaves the case in jeapordy after he begins to grow close to the baby's mother.

Jack and Smithy hold a public meeting, hoping to gain the trust and cooperation of hostile residents on the Manley Road estate, who are being terrorised by drug dealers, who have just accepted a large quantity of cocaine ready to be sold to local residents. A plucky shopkeeper takes matters into her own hands to halt the reign of fear, only to find her daughter suffers a backlash from the gang. At the end of a tiring day, Tony stuns Smithy with unexpected news that he is leaving Sun Hill.

Leon responds to a call from a distraught mother whose eighteen-month-old child has sustained serious head injuries. She claims the toddler fell from her highchair, but suspicion mounts that the mother's partner may have contravened his restraining order to visit the family. Tony spends his last shift at Sun Hill comforting the woman, and is shocked when he has to arrest her for harming her own daughter. However, his day ends on a lighter note when Smithy gives him praise to take up a driving instructor post at Hendon.

Grace is summoned to a Soho brothel, where a woman is holding a man at knifepoint, claiming he knows the whereabouts of her sixteen-year-old sister, who has been missing for six months. When a body is found, she follows a lead to the missing girl's old teacher, who had acted as her support buddy when she turned to prostitution to pay for her heroin habit, and nearly loses control when she is overcome by anger in the interrogation room.

A convicted murderer reaching the end of his sentence learns his fifteen-year-old daughter has disappeared and the Sun Hill detectives suspect revenge is involved when investigations reveal she had been going out with the victim's son. Banksy and Mickey attempt to piece together the evidence, but when the bitter widow refuses to co-operate with the inquiry, fearing she may lose her son as well as her husband, they have no choice but to put the whole family in the frame for the kidnapping. Meanwhile, the relief prepare to say goodbye as Sally departs on a transfer to Manchester.

Mickey goes undercover as a homeless man to investigate the mystery of a young solictor's body found in the river, wearing a down-and-out's coat over his designer clothes. Having eliminated the dead man's ex-fiancee from the inquiries, despite Grace's doubts, he gains the trust of a girl living on the streets, and discovers the entire homeless community of Sun Hill lives in fear of a shady character known only as Greg. Back at the station, Millie prepares to sign off from her final shift.

After another night undercover on the streets, Mickey learns a second down-and-out has been murdered. The fears of the homeless community are underlined when Mickey's informant is badly beaten and suspicion falls on property developer Greg Simm, who has form for fraud and deception. It emerges the suspect had trouble with squatters holding up work on a development site, but evidence against him is hard to find. A bigger shock for Mickey is the news his new friend Nicola is in the frame for the murder.

On Will Fletcher's last day at Sun Hill, Mickey questions a man accused of assaulting a doctor, who he claims is having an affair with his wife. The suspect, Trevor Berwich, turns out to be severely depressed and unbalanced, but Callum's macho handling pushes him further toward disaster when he disappears with his baby son in his car. Realising his error, the sergeant tracks him down, only to see the distraught man deliberately smash into a parked vehicle, setting his own car alight.

A 16-year-old claims she has been gang raped by her boyfriend, Mark Watts, and three of his friends, and Jo goes out on a limb to fight her case, even when it becomes clear the victim is not completely the innocent she at first appeared. When the girl later asks to drop the charges after receiving threatening telephone calls, Jo begs Terry for more time to extract a confession from Greg Holbrook, the weakest of the trio, determined not to let the arrogant youths get away with their crime.

An intruder, Jeremy Preston, detained in young couple Amy and Josh Ryan's flat, turns out to have been there before, though the residents claim to have no idea who he is. Jo discovers the suspect works as a security guard in the same building as the woman, and investigates the theory he has been stalking her, but extracting a confession puts her in a tricky position. When Jeremy's fingerprints are found on Amy's kitchen knife, he makes an allegation that could rock Amy's world. At the end of an arduous shift, Jo discovers her hard work is to be rewarded with a promotion.

On her first shift as a sergeant, Jo is called to the scene of an aggravated robbery in which the homeowner, John Baker, died in a particularly violent and bloody way. Max discovers John's wife Tnisha has been on a missing persons list for twenty years. When it emerges the victim was an abusive drunk and had been involved with another woman, Grace warms to the man's Asian-born widow and clashes with Max over his apparent racial prejudice. However, Max uncovers a further secret when he digs into the man's personal affairs.

Stone is called to an incident in which a letter bomb has been sent to the manager of a successful company. He intervenes and manages to save a trapped PA, but the bomb later proves to be harmless - but, after talking to witnesses, Grace has a hunch that worse is to follow. The intended 'victim', company manager Alan Cooper, turns out to be cheating on his pregnant wife with his secretary, and a courier bears a grudge after being thrown out of the office, but the main suspect turns out to be the manager's own brother.

A desperate woman barricades herself and her son into her estranged husband's house, and alerts the police to the fact her children are being neglected and abused by their father. However, the father, an ex-police officer, alerts Jack that the boys are being held at gunpoint, and that their mother is addicted to cocaine. Jo asks CO19 to not go in all guns blazing, and instead establishes a computer link with the mother, building up a measure of trust - but her concern for the welfare of the boy increases when a shot is fired.

An off-duty Callum is badly beaten after intervening in an argument between a couple, Clarinda and Tim, but turns up for work as usual the next day after a night in hospital. New PC Kirsty Knight teams up with Jo and their inquiries lead to the arrest of the man responsible for the attack on their colleague - and discover that he is about to target his estranged wife with a series of petrol bombs. However, he is released due to lack of evidence - and Callum decides to take matters into his own hands.

The team attempt to stop a brawl in a local nightclub but they then discover the fight was a diversion for a robbery in the club. Stone arrests the man behind the fight but is left suspended when the thug accuses him of assault, and Jack is even more concerned for Sun Hill's reputation when Commander Kennedy is called in to investigate.

When Nate and Ben are shot at whilst on patrol, the teams investigation leads them to Malcom Cristie, a local businessman who's car was used as a getaway car. Smithy and Jo suspect Cristie was behind the shooting, however, new evidence links to Jasmine Harris, a local teenage tearaway who is also Malcom's ex-girlfriend.

A traffic accident on the local estate results in the death of teenager Paul Sorrel. Investigating further, Jo and her team discover Paul was shot and the teenager who was run over was black. Mickey turns to Jasmine Harris for help. Meanwhile, Max tries to outsmart Jo by takimg over the investigation into the shooting.

When Jack is assigned to oversee crowd control at a football match, Commander Kennedy becomes concerned when one of a group of fans is shepherded into a confined area. The situation on the ground soon escalates, and after a full-scale team on team riot, the team discover one football fan dead in the footwell of the stadium.

Commander Kennedy prepares to face a hostile press over charges that police handling of the football crowd contributed to the murder, and is shocked to see CCTV footage showing her own son running away from the crime scene. The victim turns out to have a complicated love life that may have led to the killing, and two other suspects are identified, but the commander's leadership and probity face their sternest test.

When the brother of a drug dealer is knocked off his motorbike and killed, the dealer believes it was no accident. Mickey and Max investigate, and soon discover that the man may not have been as clean cut as his brother thought - and when a package containing substance drugs is found, Mickey believes he was the intended target after all.

Jo and Ben are called to a disturbance at a hotel. They discover a badly-beaten man in a hotel room, but the married woman who booked the room has disappeared. Max and Terry investigate the stepfather of the murdered eleven-year-old, and uncover a hijacking operation. Max leads an investigation into a paedophile who is grooming young girls on the internet. As such, he is tasked with going undercover to catch the culprit. He snorts cocaine in order to keep his cover, but when Mickey and Terry catch him taking cocaine in the station toilets, they challenge him over his cocaine problem.

Ben and Nate track down the owner of an abandoned car and are advised that he has left the country on business. Max and Grace are suspicious, and soon find out that the man has been kidnapped. Kirsty and Leon are alerted to the discovery of a young woman's body on a rubbish tip. Suspicion falls on the woman's partner, and the officers race to find the woman's partner before he harms himself or their young son. They arrive at the partner's house, but find him dead, hung from a rope on the ceiling, and the boy dead, after being suffocated. Feeling traumatised following the day's events, the pair find solace in each other, and end up kissing.

When a pregnant woman is involved in a hit-and-run with her own car, Leon attempts to track down the culprit responsible. Not yet recovered from the trauma of seeing the young boy dead, when he finds the man suspected of the hit-and-run, he beats him to a bloody pulp. Still determined to get a result, he forces the man to claim that a group of kids assaulted him.

Callum and Kirsty attend a report of a domestic disturbance. An elderly widow claims to have been burgled, but Kirsty presses her and establishes that the woman has been raped by a local youth. Terry takes on the case, but the investigation is hampered by the woman's refusal to undergo a medical examination or provide a sample of DNA.

Max leads the investigation into the murder of a man whose body is found badly beaten on a footpath. Kirsty establishes that the man had been drinking at his local pub shortly before his death, but the bar staff prove unhelpful. Max's erratic behaviour forces Terry to once again challenge him over his cocaine use.

Investigations into his murder lead the team to Jasmine Harris, one of Mickey's previous informants. Investigations reveal that she lured Liam to where he was killed, and as such, she is arrested. In interview, Jasmine leads officers to Carlos Miller, who she claims pulled the trigger. He is arrested, and claims that he killed Liam in self defence. Jasmine is released on bail, against the advice of Mickey, who believes that she is in danger from other gang members. Upon her return to the estate, a gang of boys force Jasmine into a warehouse, where she is beaten and gang raped.

Following the gang-rape of Jasmine Harris for talking to the police, uniformed officers arrive at the flat of Gary Wilson, where they arrest him and his friend, Colin Simmons. As Meadows and Mason question the suspects, Smithy visits Jasmine in hospital, where she refuses to give a statement and prosecute. Due to a lack of evidence, the team are forced to release Simmons, Wilson and Carlos Miller. Jasmine is discharged from hospital, and still refuses to give a statement. However, as the team sees fit to give up, much to the anger of Mickey, Eddie discovers that the gunshot fired in the warehouse was fired upwards, and so possibly to alert passers-by, and to stop the gang-rape. Due to CCTV footage, the officers believe that gang member, Derek Bailey fired the shot, and set out to find him as a potential witness. They pull in courier, Ruby Collier. She initially refuses to help them, but sends Mickey a text message that leads uniform to Bailey's location. Stone ascends to the top storey, where he discovers Bailey dying from a gunshot wound, inflicted by Gary Wilson, who holds Stone at gunpoint, when he attempts to help Bailey. Armed police officers arrive, and prepare to fire at Stone, who tousels with Wilson. A gunshot is heard, but nobody is harmed. Bailey is taken to hospital, and Wilson is arrested. After talking to Smithy and Mickey, Jasmine finally agrees to a statement, which helps to convict Wilson and the others of gang-rape. A special crossover episode, involving the cast of SOKO Leipzig, set two years after the events of Respect. After thirty years of service, Jack Meadows has retired, and is now living a quiet life on the outskirts of south east London, with his son, Benjamin, and his wife, Laura. While Ben and Laura take a well deserved holiday in Barcelona, Jack decides to visit his old friend Hajo Trautzchke, chief of SOKO Leipzig, for a few days. He even arrives in his own Cessna - called "Jack's Sparrow". Meanwhile, Trautzchke's colleagues Zimmermann and Maybach investigate the death of Leo Karmann, a geologist who apparently threw himself out of his apartment window - but they soon clash with LKA detectives Stravinsky and Müller, who also have an interest in the case. As Jack is having a drink with Hajo in a Leipzing bar, he sees a face from the past - Karen Bishop, suspected of having murdered her husband in London. But in Germany, the woman is known as Irene Karmann, and she's the wife of the dead geologist. Is Jack really visiting an old friend, or is he in Leipzig for some unfinished business? Why is he carrying a gun? And will his friendship with Hajo Trautzchke be jeopardized by Irene?
