It's a fair accolade for someone who, aged 11, worked as a butcher's boy in the day and delivered prescriptions in the evenings. "My father died of TB," he confides. "I lived with TB in the house. I'm not complaining about it, it was a great experience really, it made you stand on your own two feet. Life wasn't soft."

He had dreams of being a farmer but his father told him to stay at school.

Clarke set up the building firm Clarke St Modwen with his brother-in-law, which he developed into a major regional house builder. Sir Stanley Clarke CBE (7 June 1933 - 19 September 2004), was an English businessman, a self-made millionaire property developer, horse racing enthusiast, and philanthropist.

Early life

After giving up training, Clarke concentrated on breeding stock and racing. He stabled a number of horses with Somerset-based Martin Pipe, who trained Rolling Ball, the Royal and SunAlliance Chase winner at Cheltenham racecourse in 1991.[2]
