Series chronology

Series 21 of British television drama The Bill consisted of 106 episodes, broadcast between 5 January and 29 December 2005. This series included a special half-hour two-hander episode dedicated to the departure of DC Jim Carver, and also saw the second major cast change of recent years, after the second Sun Hill fire. A second live episode was also broadcast during this series. One of four The Bill: Uncovered documentaries, "On the Front Line", remains unaired to this day in the United Kingdom as its broadcast was cancelled due to events that occurred in London that day, which resulted in a breaking news bulletin being aired in its place.

Elsewhere, DS Nixon is appalled to learn Abi is carrying Hugh Wallis's baby, and DC Perkins begins to doubt whether his brother is guilty of the child abuse charges.

DS Nixon feels trapped in a never-ending nightmare when a confrontation with Abi leads to yet another revelation - she intends to marry her erstwhile kidnapper Hugh. Turning to DS Hunter for help, DS Nixon hatches a plan to snatch her pregnant, brainwashed daughter from the psychopath's clutches. Two community support officers, PCSOs Laura Bryant and Colin Fairfax, are assigned to Sun Hill, where they are greeted by a contemptuous outburst from Sgt. Smith.

Hugh turns the tables on DS Nixon by dropping in at Sun Hill and accusing her of abducting her own daughter. Elsewhere, Scott Burnett's wife is found murdered, and PC Harman is assigned as his family liason officer.

DS Nixon stuggles to prove that Hugh abducted, brainwashed and raped her daughter, and despite strong evidence, he arrogantly sticks to his story that Abi instigated the sexual relationship that has left her pregnant and emotionally wrecked. PC Harman tells PC Hunter about her unprofessional behaviour with Scott Burnett.

PCs Murphy and Kappor investigate a man accused of deliberately infecting women with HIV, but PC Kapoor reckons her colleague is prejudiced against the colour of the suspect's skin - and when she learns that PC Murphy was demoted to PC because of a racism allegation, it seems her worst fears are confirmed. DC Carver is appalled when PCs Powell and Valentine discover the decomposing body of a vagrant, later identified as his ex-wife, Marie. DI Manson is forced to accept that his father-in-law has been using the services of rent boys.

PCs Murphy and Kapoor investigate the suspicious death of a baby, but soon find themselves at odds when it seems accusations of abuse directed at the infant's asylum-seeker parents could be fuelled by racism. PCs Harman and Johannsen fight over PC Hunter's affections, leading to PC Harman accusing PC Johannsen of deliberately trying to ruin her relationship. However, she later displays breathtaking hypocrisy, by falling into bed with Scott Burnett, after he is accused of murdering his wife. DI Manson is upset after he catches PC Dunbar kissing Sgt. Smith, and confronts her about who she really wants.

A Friday night shift proves a hectic time for the Sun Hill coppers as a childhood friend of PC Johannsen's is raped, DS Hunter and DC Best go undercover to trap and collar a drug dealer, and a mugging victim is attacked for a second time after being ignored by Acting Sgt. Hemmingway. PC Harman decides to break off her relationship by PC Hunter. DI Manson promises to leave his wife for PC Dubar, DS Hunter is forced to attend sex addiction classes by his wife, and Acting Sgt. Hemmingway learns she's no longer Acting Sergeant.

Jaws drop at Sun Hill as June Ackland returns to take up the post of sergeant, a mere two months after her retirement. It's no secret she needs the money to clear DC Carver's gambling debts - but she makes it plain she's not prepared to be a figure of fun or pity. Meanwhile, DC Best finds himself implicated in a money-laundering operation after falling for a woman's charms, PC Dunbar acts as a decoy to trap unlicensed cab drivers, and rejects propositions from DI Manson and Sgt. Smith, and DS Hunter contines to prove to his wife that he is not addicted to sex.

Sgt. Ackland leaps to PC Valentine's defence after the leader of a gang of rowdy schoolgirls accuses him of indecent assault, and later plants a kiss on the startled copper - leaving an ominous question mark hanging over her already troubled relationship with Jim. DC Best swears revenge on the female con-artist who inveigled him into the money laundering racket, and in an attempt to bring her to justice, enlists the help of DC Masters. PC Dunbar is determined to remain undercover, and promises her editor a scoop on a blue-on-blue murder.

Realising that she is up to something, PC Kent threatens her with violence - and her perilous situation is not improved when DI Manson spots her deep in conversation with editor Bruce Malcolm. PCs Kapoor and Johannsen take the response level driving course at Hendon, and take a shine to new Spicer Screet recruit PC Dan Casper.

PC Dunbar's cover has been well and truly blown, leaving her to face the wrath of Insp. Gold and fatally compromising her testimony at the trial of rapist Alan Kennedy. Desperate to redeem herself, she makes one last effort to gather incriminating evidence against PC Kent - only to end up being held hostage in a storeroom by the crazed copper. Meanwhile, PCSO Fairfax is driven over the edge after being exposed as a racist, and in a bid to assert his authority, kidnaps DC Drummond and handcuffs him into the back of a delivery van, before driving it into the front office, and causing an explosion to rip through Sun Hill.

An inferno sweeps through Sun Hill station in the aftermath of the explosion, giving PC Kent the chance to make good his escape, callously leaving PC Dunbar trapped under fallen debris as the flames creep closer. Sgt. Smith also faces a fiery demise in the burning building, while DC Carver struggles to accept the news that his friend DC Drummond was killed instantly when the van blew up. Supt. Okaro confirms the deaths of PC Dunbar and SRO Chambers, leaving PC Hollis and DI Manson to find comfort in each other as they reminisce about the time they spent with each of their loved ones. DC Carver suspects Sgt. Ackland is having an affair with PC Valentine, and Insp. Gold suspects that PC Kent's actions may not be as clear cut as they seem.

DC Carver is determined to save his marriage to Sgt. Ackland, and the pair meet at the local pub to discuss their relationship. However, when Sgt. Ackland arrives with PC Valentine in tow, DC Carver issues a harsh warning. The pair are subsequently sidelined when they are forced to deal with a squabbling couple, leading DC Carver into the realisation that he has served his time at Sun Hill, and making the decision to start a new life far away from London.

In the aftermath of the disaster, PC Hollis is overwhelmed with grief at the loss of his soul mate, DI Manson bottles up his feelings, and PC Kent is hailed as a hero for rescuing Sgt. Smith. With MIT and the anti-terrorism squad crawling over the burnt-out shell of the Sun Hill station, PC Stamp investigates a link between PCSO Fairfax and a local extremist group. PCs Valentine and Johannsen are called out to facilitate a social worker's access to a young child, leading DS De Costa and DC Perkins get involved when they discover that the father has a conviction for sex with a minor. Sgt. Ackland struggles to adjust to life without DC Carver.

The spectre of racial unrest looms over Sun Hill following a number of assaults on the Muslim community, allegedly committed by white youths. PC Kapoor persuades her father to tell the police he witnessed an Asian man carry out one of the attacks. As the three officers killed in the explosion are laid to rest, DI Manson arouses his wife's suspicions by attending PC Dunbar's funeral.

PC Kapoor urges her hospitalised father to make a statement about his attackers, and is warned her own life is in danger - which only increases her determination to pursue the case to the bitter end. DC Masters goes on the trail of a violent pimp and offers a local prostitute the chance to become a police informant, while PC Kent shows his compassionate side by protecting a little girl he suspects is being abused. PC Harman brushes aside PC Hemmingway's concerns about her engagement to Scott Burnett, putting it down to jealousy - unaware of PC Hemmingway's budding romance with A&E nurse Nick.

Elsewhere, PC Kent sets out to prove schoolgirl Gemma Bentley is being abused by her stepmother - and finds an ally in PC Murphy.

PC Casper arrives at Sun Hill on a transfer from Spicer Street, and immediately risks life and limb to rescue a girl attempting to kill herself on a dual carriageway. Smith she's suffering from cancer. DC Best makes himself unpopular by criticising the boys in uniform.

JT unwittingly puts a woman's life in jeopardy by sending her to the house of serial rapist Alan Kennedy, forcing DS Nixon and DC Perkins to abandon a covert surveillance operation and rush to her rescue. PCs Hollis and Stamp arrest two squabbling burglars, and Sgt. Smith urges Insp. Gold to give up smoking. DS De Costa is astounded to overhear Margaret Barnes and PC Valentine discussing her love life - or lack of one.

PCs Powell and Murphy's drugs investigation on the Cole Lane Estate takes an ugly turn when an elderly man is attacked and suspicion falls on two local dealers - one of whom is subsequently shot dead, and the other, Adi Mateen, teases PC Powell. Serial rapist Alan Kennedy is assaulted by a friend of his first victim and responds by making a chilling phone call to DS Nixon.

DS Nixon and DC Perkins find themselves in a room full of venomous snakes, while Insp. Gold faces an ordeal of a different kind as she prepares to start chemotherapy.

DC Best investigates the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl and discovers she lied about her age. At his urging, the accused confess to sex, hoping to be treated leniently - only to end up facing a possible life sentence. Gold about events leading up to Margaret Barnes' fall - and suffers the added trauma of learning PC Valentine has accused her of deliberately causing the incident.

June Ackland's flat in 1995, which was the result of a stalker who had been following her over the outcome of a case, and his own first day at Sun Hill, where he saved a young girl from the clutches of her father who had been abusing her.

PCs Kent and Murphy put their kiss behind them and work as a team, while PC Harman's wedding day to Scott Burnett ends in a brawl, after murder suspect Greg bursts into the registry office and assaults Scott, forcing the registrar to abandon the ceremony. Sgt. Smith frets over Insp. Gold's refusal to take things easy, and Supt. Okaro suffers a personal tragedy, leaving him racked with guilt at putting his job before the demands and responsibilities of family life.

DCI Meadows officially opens the newly rebuilt station, while Supt. Okaro's grief at the loss of his entire family in a fatal car crash is compounded by suggestions that his wife Denise drove through a red light while talking on her mobile phone. DS Hunter tempts fate by flirting with DS Nixon, while DC Sim monitors a recently released child abuser, but makes the mistake of contacting his daughter - who is so distressed that she attempts suicide shortly afterwards.

DC Perkins races to DS De Costa's house, where an unbalanced Margaret Barnes is planning to commit suicide - only for him to be stabbed and critically injured while attempting to wrestle a knife from her. Sgt. Smith takes JT to task for spreading gossip around the station, while PCs Casper and Stamp try to track down an inventive graffiti artist who uses cleaning products to produce negative images on dirty walls around Sun Hill.

Margaret Barnes is taken to hospital, where a nurse realises that the blood on her clothes is not consistent with her wounds. DS De Costa realises DC Perkins has been stabbed and rushes home to find him bleeding to death. PC Powell and PCSO Bryant continue to help a delinquent's mother who has been beaten up by her son. They track Jordan Tomlin to a local pool hall, where they are taken aback to see Supt. Okaro apparently buying drugs from Adi Mateen. DS Nixon is impressed by DS Hunter's uncharacteristic chivalry while working on a case, and asks if he'd like to get together with her socially. Unfortunately, their date is ruined by the reappearance of a figure from his past.

Supt. Okaro attends the funeral of his wife, son and daughter, where he is comforted by Insp. Gold, who goes on to compound his distress by telling him that she has cancer. PC Powell and PCSO Bryant continue to try to help local delinquent Jordan Tomlin. PC Powell is concerned when he discovers Supt. Okaro hasn't handed in the drugs package he received from local drug dealer Adi Mateen. DSs Hunter and Nixon investigate the theft of a laptop containing sexually explicit material. DS Nixon seems to have cooled towards DS Hunter, who confides in his brother PC Hunter about Kate Maltby's pregnancy.

DS Nixon confronts DS Hunter about Kate Maltby's pregnancy. DS Hunter then attacks his younger brother PC Hunter, accusing him of betraying his confidence. Supt. Okaro and Insp. Gold have a heart-to-heart discussion, but she is sure he's hiding something. PCs Kent and Murphy work together on a harassment case involving PC Kent's fancy woman. Drug dealer Adi Mateen is forced to reveal his true identity in a desperate bid to save PC Powell from being shot by Jordan Tomlin.

Undercover DC Zain Nadir is certain that his cover has not been blown, and Supt. Okaro authorises him to meet drug dealer Joshua Armstrong. PC Harman returns from honeymoon and confides in PC Hemmingway about a storage unit hired by Scott Burnett. PC Hemmingway finds a bloody glove, fuelling suspicions that he killed his first wife. DS Hunter is furious with his brother PC Hunter for telling Kate Maltby about his daughter Madison.

The PCs are embarrassed by the old-fashioned attitudes of the former detective, who puts his back out while helping them with an arrest. Roger and Yvonne investigate a road traffic accident in which an eight-year-old boy has been killed by a joy-rider. Witnesses confirm that the boy had run in front of the car. Prosser tells the father, Jeff Clarke, that the driver will only be charged with minor offences, and he takes the news badly. Laura is surprised when a man calling himself Gabriel Kent calls in at the station and asks to see June. She mentions this to Gabriel, who dismisses the visitor as a local nutter. Gabriel goes to see his adopted brother, who quickly realises that David has stolen his identity. Meanwhile, Jeff Clarke turns up at the station and demands that his son's killer be prosecuted.
