Kalyana Parisu (English: Wedding Gift) is a 1959 Tamil romantic drama film directed by C. V. Sridhar in his debut. The film stars Gemini Ganesan, B. Saroja Devi and Vijaykumari (in her debut) in the lead roles, while K. A. Thangavelu, M. Saroja, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao and M. N. Nambiar play supporting roles. The film is about a young man who rents a house near his girlfriend, but the girl's elder sister is not aware of their romance. She subsequently falls for the man and wishes to marry him, so her younger sister decides to sacrifice her love, unknown to the former.

The film was a huge critical and commercial success, leading to a Telugu remake titled Pelli Kanuka (1960) which starred Nageshwara Rao in the lead, along with Saroja Devi and Vijaykumari reprising their roles.[2] It was also remade in Hindi as Nazrana (1961) which starred Raj Kapoor and Vyjayanthimala in the lead, along with Gemini Ganesan in a guest role.[3]

Plot

Baskar (Gemini Ganesan) and Vasanthi (Saroja Devi) are college mates. Both are very successful athletes in their college sports day, and Baskar falls for Vasanthi, even though she doesn't know it. One day during class, Baskar writes a love letter to Vasanthi, but the latter gets enraged and complains to the college dean, who immediately dismisses Baskar. Vasanthi later feels sorry for ruining his future. However, Baskar meets his old friend Sampath (Thangavelu) in a park, who helps the former get a new job that satisfies him. Vasanthi approaches Baskar and apologizes for her cruel act. Baskar forgives her, and they both fall for each other.

Vasanthi lives with her mother and her elder sister Geetha (Vijaykumari) who is unmarried. Geetha, supports the family by stitching clothes. Baskar rents the top floor of their house. The fact that he and Vasanthi are in love is not known to anyone except Sampath and his wife (M. Saroja). One day when Baskar falls ill, Geetha nurses him and in the process, falls in love with him. She confides her love to Vasanthi who is heartbroken, but decides to sacrifice her love for the sake of her sister. Since Geetha gave up almost everything to support the family, she is granted her wish, and Vasanthi convinces Baskar to marry Geetha, this sacrifice is unknown to Geetha. After Baskar and Geetha get married, they shift to Coimbatore where Baskar has been transferred. Meanwhile, Vasanthi drops out of college, and gets a job as a typist. Her office boss Raghu (Nageshwara Rao) falls for her, but she is still confused whether to marry or not, ever since she couldn't marry Baskar. Raghu gives her time to think, before resigning from his job.

Vasanthi writes to Baskar that their sacrifice, made for Geetha's happiness, would mean nothing unless he is a good husband to Geetha. Baskar relents to this. Vasanthi arrives in Coimbatore several months later, to take back home a pregnant Geetha. Some time after the baby is born and named Raja, Geetha and Vasanthi's mother dies of serious illness. Thus, everyone shifts to Coimbatore. Baskar is joyed to see Vasanthi and spends more time with her, soon Geetha suspects him of betrayal. Geetha reveals her anger that Basker is ignoring her, but Vasanthi arrives and explains the truth, leaving her elder sister heartbroken. The next day, Vasanthi leaves the house secretly because of her sister's anger.

Geetha, having realized that Baskar and Vasanthi loved each other, dies in guilt, leaving Baskar alone to bring up their child, making him promise that he will make Vasanthi the child's mother. He searches for Vasanthi all over the city, but with no success. Meanwhile, Vasanthi meets with an accident, but is cured by an elderly doctor (Nambiar) who allows her to stay in his house since he is alone. After receiving a letter that his son is returning home after a long time, he is overjoyed. When the doctor's son arrives, Vasanthi is surprised to see that it is her former boss Raghu. She finally accepts to marry him, but decides to keep her marriage a secret from Baskar.

She also invites Sampath and his wife to her marriage, and explain that it must remain a secret to Baskar. Sampath, not wanting to let down his close friend, writes a letter to Baskar regarding Vasanthi's marriage to Raghu. When Baskar reads about where the marriage is happening, he and Raja rush to the marriage hall, apparently to stop the marriage. However by the time they arrive, Vasanthi is already married. Baskar hands over his child to her as a wedding gift, and walks away. Vasanthi, having realized that her elder sister Geetha is dead, accepts Raja as her son.

Cast

Production

The film marked the debut for C. V. Sridhar, whose later films were "etched in the memories of many".[4] It was also the Tamil debut film for Telugu singer A. M. Rajah as music director.[5]

Soundtrack

Untitled

The film's soundtrack was composed by A. M. Rajah in his debut in Tamil cinema,[5] while the lyrics were penned by Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram.[6] All the songs were acclaimed, and contributed to the film's success. A. M. Rajah and Gemini Ganesan's voice matching was labelled as "impeccable", and was compared to "what Mukesh was for Raj Kapoor".[5] The success of Kalyana Parisu's songs made P. Susheela a leading female playback singer of Tamil cinema.[7]

Critical response

The songs received positive response. Tamil film historian S. Theodore Baskaran said, "Its songs were stupendous hits. It owed its phenomenal success in large part to its music composed by A.M. Raja, who was at his peak as a playback singer. the filmic convention of singing the same song twice, once in joy and once in sorrow, is followed. in fact, there are two such happy-sad songs."[8] V. Balasubramanian of The Hindu said, "A. M. Rajah's tryst with composing includes super duper hit songs from the films Kalyana Parisu, Aadi Perukku and Then Nilavu."[9]

Release

Reception

Theodore Baskaran said in his book The Eye of the Serpent, "The film is very much within the framework of traditional conduct, though the filmmaker has tried to accommodate romantic love into this scheme of things." He further mentioned, "The filmmaker treats romantic love in a relentlessly maudlin manner, with much weeping and wailing", while pointing out that "The separate sub-plot for comic relief neither fits into the story nor is it cinematic. However, these episodes were a major point of attraction and audio cassettes of this kind of humour are still sold."[8]

Box office

Kalyana Parisu turned out very profitable at the box office and "brought in a great deal of money", largely due to its music.[8] Having run for over 100 days in theatres,[10] it became one of Sridhar's biggest box-office successes,[11] and was labelled a "runaway hit".[12]

Accolades

Other info

Kalyana Parisu, which created a major impact on the Tamil film industry, was the breakthrough for B. Saroja Devi and music director A. M. Rajah.[7] It is also considered the "most important" film for actress M. Saroja, who played K. A. Thangavelu's wife in the film. On the film's 100th day celebrations, both were married at a temple in Madurai. The duo went on to act in over 200 films together.[15][16] With Kalyana Parisu's success, C. V. Sridhar launched his own production company, Chitralaya Pictures.[7]
