The Shire is an Australian reality series set to screen on Network Ten in 2012. The series follows the lives of residents of the Sutherland Shire, in the southern suburbs of Sydney.

The series has been described as dramality, a combination of drama and the reality television series genre. The Shire is made by the producers of UK program The Only Way is Essex. It has also had comparisons to other reality series such as Jersey Shore, Geordie Shore and The Hills. [1] The production company describe the series as a reality show version of soap opera Home and Away.

Controversy

Following a a leaked clip of the show appearing on the internet in March 2012, the Mayor of Sutherland Shire vowed to take "any means possible" to stop the production crews filming in the area. The local council reportedly put forward a motion at a council meeting on March 19 saying they did "not approve the filming of The Shire and [would] not co-operate in any way with the production". [2] The mayor urged locals not to cooperate with the makers of the program. [3]
