The first version of the song appeared in late 2008 in Porto Seguro, on the southern coast of Bahia state. It was written by Sharon Acioly of AxI Moi. She had already authored another song and author of the funk hit "Dança do Quadrado". The band Meninos was headed by Seu Zeh and directed by Dyggs who cow-wrote the song. The original lyrics also said 'sábado na kabana' rather than 'sábado na kabana'. The song was reportedly composed in reference to a nightclub "Feria de Santana"

Antonio Dyggs who co-wrote the song realized that this could become a national hit in Brazil offering it for a release by Michel Teló with the resulting hit in Brazil, Spain, throughout Europe and internationally.

Popularity in football (soccer)

The song is especially popular among soccer (Association football) players. It was first danced by Brazilian player Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior , but it became extremely popular after Real Madrid players Marcelo Vieira and Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated a goal dancing to the choreography of the song.[1]

After that the "Ai Se Eu Te Pego" goal celebration spread to other European leagues. Since then it has been performed by Marco Reus of Borussia Mönchengladbach[2] and Lewis Holtby of Schalke 04[3] in the Bundesliga, Panathinaikos players in Superleague Greece[4], Vagner Love of CSKA Moscow in the Russian Premier League[5], Alexandre Pato, Robinho, Thiago Silva and Kevin-Prince Boateng of AC Milan in Serie A[6], John Guidetti from Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, Adrian Mutu and Éder from Cesenain Serie A and André Santos of Arsenal F.C. in the English Premier League[7]
