List of Law & Order: UK episodes

Law & Order: UK is a British police procedural and legal television programme, adapted from the American series Law & Order. The programme is financed by the production companies Kudos Film and Television, Wolf Films, and Universal Media Studios. Head writer Chris Chibnall based the first two series of episodes on scripts and episodes of the parent series. Although Chibnall left the programme after the first thirteen episodes were complete, the practice of adapting episodes from the American series has continued through to the present day. Law & Order: UK is based in London and stars Bradley Walsh, Jamie Bamber, Harriet Walter, Dominic Rowan, Freema Agyeman, and Peter Davison. The series premiered worldwide on ITV1 on Thursday, February 23, 2009. As of August 14, 2011, a total of 32 episodes have been shown globally. Internationally, the programme is broadcast in thirteen-episode runs, however, in Britain, each thirteen-episode run is broadcast in two halves - one containing six episodes, and the other containing the remaining seven. This resulted in several episodes being broadcast in foreign countries months before their British broadcast. The series premiered in America on BBC America on October 3, 2010. The series originally starred Ben Daniels and Bill Patterson, however, after both left the show, they were been replaced by Dominic Rowan and Peter Davison, introducting new characters Jacob Thorne and Henry Sharpe.

An evacuation of a hospital after a bag is found leads to the call out of DS Ronnie Brooks and DS Matt Devlin to investigate the death of a dead nine-month old child who was found inside a sports bag in the parking lot of the hospital. The first obvious suspect is child's mother, Dionne Farrah (Venetia Campbell), but they learn that she had left the child at home by himself pending the arrival of the babysitter as she was concerned that she would be fired if she was late to work. The sitter was refused entry to the building and the boy was poisoned by carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty central heating system from the gas heater in his flat. A fellow tenant, Mike Turner (Tony Maudsley), had been bribed by the landlady, Maureen Walters (Lorraine Ashbourne), to harass the occupants into leaving so that she can renovate the building for more profitable developers as means for getting higher rent and he is charged with tampering with the heater as means of getting rid of tenants who refused to vacate their homes, and in the process killed the child. However, the case is declared a mistrial when it is claimed that the testimony of the building's French caretaker was wrongly translated. However, the trial gets back on track when the team finds that Mrs. Walters has also been bribing environmental health officers, and Steel persuades Turner to testify against her. Steel tries to prosecute Walters for gross neglegence and corruption of public officials.

Brooks and Devlin are emotionally affected by the case of an unidentifiable 13-year-old boy who was kicked to death at Euston Station. Their initial assumption is that he is a runaway but the autopsy reveals that he was well fed and in good health. DI Chandler holds a press conference which leads to identifying the victim as Danny Jackson who was in foster care as his mother, Mandy (Nicola Stephenson) is a former drug addict and currently in a rehab facility. She recently left her live-in boyfriend, Stevie Agnew (Neal Barry), who is already suspected of physical abuse towards the victim but he denies ever touching the child and claims not to have seen him since he left his mother. The trail leads to the arrest of another young boy, Jono Blake (Richard Wisker), who was also in care at the same house as Danny. Steel and Phillips face an "old flame" from Steel's past in defence barrister Beatrice McArdle (Dervla Kirwan), who attempts a bizarre and audacious line of defence of genetic predisposition towards violence: the suggestion that genes could be responsible for aggressive behaviour. This could upset the whole British legal system since other defendants could claim that genes means that they are not responsible for their actions.

The body of ex-vice squad officer, Frank McCallum, is found in the rear seat of his own car in Paddington. He was apparently killed after oral sex. They trace his movements to a young prostitute who has McCallum's wallet in her purse, but forensics eliminates her as a suspect. Though married to an adoring wife Frank had a roving eye and according to the victim's boss (Sean Pertwee), money from the paintballing firm for which he worked is unaccounted for. As they look into their ex-colleague's background, Brooks and Devlin trace McCallum's company credit card to a children's clothing store in Barnes run by two friends, Emma Sandbrook (Juliet Aubrey) and Kate Barton (Deborah Cornelius), only to discover that it is a front for a escort girl service and the two women are moonlighting as high-class prostitutes to pay for their sons' school fees. They charge the women with murder and determine a motive for one of them to have killed the man. Emma's unique and expensive lipstick is identified amongst the forensic evidence in the back of the car. Her "formidable defence barrister", Phyllis Gladstone (Lesley Manville), argues that McCallum was blackmailing Emma for free sex and attacked her when she tried to get out of the car. He subsequently tried to force her to have sex and she killed him in self-defense. Steel and Alesha are not convinced and prepare to do battle with Gladstone.

When a treasure hunter with a metal detector uncovers a nine-year-old skeleton in shallow grave aside the Thames mudflats, it forces Brooks and Devlin to reopen a contentious murder case when they identify the remains as those of David Ackroyd who disappeared in 1999. His supposed killer and business partner, Luke Slade (Iain Glen), was eventually convicted of murder although no corpse was found and an unreliable witness claimed that Slade told him he had slit his victims throat but the medical examiner finds that he was shot in the head. As a result, it would appear that Slade is the victim of a miscarriage of justice. Steel, however, is far from convinced and, when Slade represents himself in court, it becomes less about the trial and more about the vendetta between the two men. Slade soon files a writ to have his conviction overturned and the Crown prosecutors learn that Slade will represent himself at the appeal. Whilst in jail Slade has become skilled in the law and wins himself a re-trial, putting James Steel's career on the line in the process as was the original trial prosecutor as this was his first case with the Crown Prosecution Service. Steel and the police have to build an entirely new case against him and Steel soon finds himself before his own hearing alleging misconduct in his pursuit of Slade but fortunately for Steel, a visit to Slade's old cell-mate yields results. Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the Billionaire Boys Club case.

The remains of a small boy are uncovered in a wall by a construction crew and later identified as Tommy Keegan, who disappeared in 1983 at the age of eight, 25 years after he was reported missing. The boy had his skull crushed with a blunt object and his body was bricked into a wall. Brooks and Devlin meet with the retired policeman in charge of the original investigation and he was convinced that he knew the culprit, Edward Connor (Anthony Higgins) a neighbour and a suspected paedophile, who was arrested but the police couldn't get - or beat - a confession out of him so he was released for lack of evidence. They also meet, Julia Mortimer (Holly Aird), a childhood friend of Tommy, who used to play with him when they were she was younger. She tells the police that she had seen Tommy the day before he died but they notice an anomaly in her statement and ask her to undergo EMDR therapy, also known as regression hypnosis, to see if they can retrieve any additional memories as they believe that is subconsciously suppressing her memories of the events of the time. Julia names her estranged father Vernon (Keith Barron) not only as the killer but as a paedophile himself who molested her too. This leads to a history of sexual abuse and abuse of trust and it's left up to Steel to get the man to admit it on the witness stand but the court trial leads to angry exchanges between Julia and her father. However, Steel soon finds that his whole case rests on a very upset and potentially unreliable witness. Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the George Franklin case.

When an arson attack on a Turkish club claims kills 17 people, all undocumented illegal immigrants, Brooks and Devlin are under pressure to discover just who was behind it. Using CCTV, they manage to trace a suspect to a nearby hospital and what was first thought of as a racist attack soon turns out to be a lot more complicated. The perpetrator, Nazim Kazaba (Nabil Elouahabi), is caught as part of the device he used went off in the blast and something embedded in his leg but is refusing treatment, the situation is not helped when a suspect's human rights gets in the way of obtaining the crucial evidence. Steel's attempt to to force the man to undergo treatment is unsuccessful so the police just wait for the wound to fester and, with evidence finally in hand, charge him with murder. The defendent decides to cut a deal and his information leads them to Ediz Kilic (Ken Bones), one of the most prominent members of London's Turkish community who is also a people smuggler who Kazaba claims forced him to silence the clubbers, who were ready to expose his activities. The prosecutors struggle to build a case as a conflict emerges between justice, community relations and racial harmony. Steel jeopardises his friendship with a Turkish school mate, who resents being under suspicion, from his student days to get information to bring Kilic down. Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the Happy Land fire caused by Julio Gonzalez.

When Phillips' gynaecologist, Dr. Alec Merrick (Derek Riddell), touches her inappropriately during a routine medical examination, she files a complaint with the police and accuses the respected Doctor of sexual assault. Brooks, Devlin and Chandler struggle to find any firm evidence to investigate and the team becomes divided, but can't seem to find any former patients who may have made similar claims. They do however find that he did sleep with some patients, even if they won't accuse him of misconduct, making the conflicting reports from previous clients impossible to make an arrest. After learning that they have insufficient evidence to proceed, Phillips then resorts to desperate means to obtain justice only to make things worse for herself. Returning for a follow-up exam, Merrick drugs and rapes her, which she records on a spy camera. Steel is pitted against formidable defence barrister Phyllis Gladstone (Lesley Manville), who at trial claims entrapment. When Merrick also claims that the sex was consensual and the apparent rape was in fact role-playing as agreed to by both of them, Steel comes under pressure to secure a conviction.

Young police constable Nick Bentley (Ashley Rolfe) is shot by drug dealers while on foot patrol, when he gets caught in a war between two dealers and is killed. His partner, PC Ray Griffin (Jamie Forman), says Nick shouldn't have been on his own but they got separated while on foot patrol. Brooks and Devlin think it's a tragic but pretty straightforward case and eventually locate a witness who identifies one of the parties to the drug transaction. They soon catch drug dealer Theo Carson (Ashley Chin). Carson shocks them and their boss, DI Natalie Chandler, when he tells them he saw another police constable standing in the shadows while the injured policeman was calling for help. Brooks and Devlin find an anomaly in Griffin's formal statement and they decide to investigate. Brooks and Devlin discover that Nick was gay and that Bentley's fellow constables had recently learned of his sexual orientation, also that Griffin is the head of a Christian group that doesn't accept homosexuals on the force. At the CPS, James Steel and Alesha Phillips think they can prove Griffin was duty-bound to help his dying partner. But their boss, George Castle, doesn't agree. He doesn't want to upset the working relationship they have with the police and thinks the force won't be with them. James and Alesha don't want to let Griffin off the hook, though and argue that Griffin had a duty of care and was obliged to help his dying partner.

When 10 year-old Jodie Gaines is found dead in a dis-used builder's skip, Brooks and Devlin find themselves investigating a cab driver, who regularly takes Jodie to music lesssons. He claims to have dropped Jodie directly outside her teacher's house, however, the teacher claims she never arrived. Brooks and Devlin realise one of them is lying - and upon reinterviewing each witness, discover that the taxi driver did not take her all the way to the teacher's house due to roadworks blocking the route. The pair then decide to look at the CCTV footage from the surrounding area - which happily corroborates the taxi driver's story - however, also throws a new light on the investigation when a white builder's van is seen to be following Jodie. Brooks and Devlin are soon lead to believe that Nick Carlton (Phillip Wright), an ex-con working for a seemly harmless construction company, was infact the man who kidnapped Jodie - and soon, forensic evidence ties him to her kidnap. When the case reaches court, the accused is surprising allowed bail - but no sooner is he free to walk the streets, he is attacked and murdered by Jodie's mother Kayleigh (Anna Madeley), a recovering drug addict who lost contact with the girl after she was caught up in a custody battle. Crown prosecutor James Steel seeks a murder conviction, even though he knows that Kayleigh will be likely to have the sympathy of the court. It appears that Kayleigh will be set free until Devlin and Brooks uncover a crucial piece of information. Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the Ellie Nesler case, with some aspects of British crimes including the faked kidnapping of Shannon Matthews and the murder of Sarah Payne.

A homeless man with bipolar disorder, Roland Kirk (Sean Harris), is found severly beaten in a well-cared for residential square of an East London estate. Kirk had unofficially moved into the community, and had been living out of a campervan in the square for sometime, mainly causing trouble with his homeless friends. The law becomes a minefield for detectives Brooks and Devlin as they discover their list of suspects is long. Kirk was not really welcome on the estate, his presence taunting the residents who made countless complaints to the police, only to see him return once the police move him away. suspicion falls onto Joe Butts (Will Thorp), a seemingly harmless party who's girlfriend the homeless man had been stalking. When Kirk regains consciousness, he claims that he has no recollection of who attacked him - except that remembered seeing a dragon before he fell unconscious. It is soon discovered that the 'dragon' is infact a pattern on the dressing gown of Butts - and he is brought in and charged. However, he reveals there was more than one man there that night. When the investigation reveals that the CCTV cameras had been turned away, indicating that the attack may have been planned, many in the neighborhood refuse to cooperate, and none are willing to give up the person who did what so many of them wanted to do. When a lead discovers hapless father Harry Morgan (Kevin McNally) to have been seen at the scene of the crime, he is soon charged with Kirk's assualt. Steel believes he has a secure case with several motives - including the Kirk assaulting and breaking Morgan's wife Irene's arm, and Kirk converting Morgan's son Nate (Jonathan Readwin) into his way of life. When the case reaches court, however, Morgan claims he acted in self-defence.

When Darren McKenzie, a well-known local drug dealer and pimp, is found lying on the ground in a park with what appears to be a missing kidney, Brooks and Devlin realise they must uncover exactly what happened to the man before the attacker strikes again. Their case soon leads to Joanna Woodleigh, a seemingly normal NHS patient who has recently undergone a successful idney transplant, after two failed previous attempts . When they discover the kidney placed into Joanna belonged to McKenzie, they discover that somebody illegally sneaked the kidney into the hospital, and used it in the otherwise legal operation. When Joanna's father, Phillip (Denis Lawson) revealed he paid Joanna's doctor, John Reberty, £2,000,000 to find Joanna a suitable kidney in any way possible, Brooks and Devlin believe that the doctor, with the help of nurse Martha Kemble (Victoria Carling), took the kidney from McKenzie as it was the only suitable match. Steel soon struggles as to which one he should put in the dock - but is surprised to discover that George will be defending the case.

When teenager Debbie Powell collapses and dies upon return from a holiday in Thailand, Brooks and Devlin suspect that foul play has occured when a ruptured condom, containing heroin, is found in her system. It is revealed she had more than seventy condoms in her stomach, worth a street value of £250,000. The trail of suspects soon leads to Gerry Craig (Doug Allen), a known drug-dealer who had regular contact with Debbie. He, however, leads Brooks & Devlin to believe that Debbie had a secret boyfriend - and that he was the one who had a contact in Thailand, and had arranged for Debbie to smuggle the drugs into the country. When her secret boyfriend is discovered to be family friend Jack Gilmore (Shaun Dooley), Brooks & Devlin discover Debbie was one in a long line of mules who Gilmore had sent on holiday to smuggle drugs for him. When the case comes to court, Steel faces a tough decision over securing a prosecution, after star witness Craig decides to change his story in the witness box.

When an operation involving a police informant and a consignment of drugs goes wrong, resulting in the shooting of an informant, Shahid Nafoor, DS Jimmy Valentine (Robert Glenister) comes under suspicion. He claims that Nafoor pulled the gun on him, and that in a struggle to disarm him, the gun fired. Brooks, who was part of the operation with Valentine, seems sure that his old friend is telling the truth, and has no questions regarding. However, Devlin, who was watching from the background, doesn't seem so sure that Nafoor made the first move. Valentine is investigated, and it soon becomes apparent that Nafoor was a drugs runner for Clyde Mason, whom Valentine had a secret deal with. Devlin discovers that Mason had ordered Valentine to shoot Nafoor, after he discovered that Nafoor had been giving the police information on him. He also discovers that Valentine's relationship with Mason began several years ago, after Mason offered Valentine a sum of money to get him off a drugs possession charge. Valentine did so by arranging someone to remove evidence from the evidence store, meaning Mason would walk free on a technicality. When the case gets to court, however, things become awry. Valentine twists his story, claiming that Brooks was only part of the operation for a specific reason - that he was the person who stole the drugs from the evidence store.

When five-year-old Connor Reid is found strangled to death in a dis-used council flat, suspicion falls onto a mystery man who ten year old Paige Ward (Annie Cull) and Rose Shaw (Romy Irving) claim to have seen. However, when CCTV footage shows Paige & Rose accompaying Connor into the flat, the pair open up and claim they had been babysitting Connor after his six-year-old brother, who was supposed to be babysitting, had gone to the shop for some sweets. When forensic evidence links them to Connor's death, Paige breaks down and names Rose as the killer. When the case gets to court, Rose's brief Kim Sharkey invites the court to accept Paige as the guilty party, as forensics seem to implicate her as the murderess. However, Alesha finds evidence to confirm Rose as the killer. Connor's mother, however, claims she doesn't want either girl to be punished - and instead plead that due to their abusive upbringings, the courts have grounds to charge diminished responsibility, and seek psychiatric care for the children. However Sharkey, after professional glory, wants an all-or-nothing verdict. James puts Rose's vile mother in the witness box to prove the prosecution point and save Rose from a murder charge. When sixteen-year-old virgin Ashanti Walker is found murdered in her bed following sex, the MO matches a series of cases committed by serial rapist Paul Darnell. Conviently, Darnell had been released from prison just three months earlier - and suspiscion soon falls upon his part in the crime. However, with no signs of forced entry at heer flat, Brooks & Devlin struggle to make the claim stick. Darnell's loyal girlfriend, Cassie Shaw (Neve McIntosh), claims his innocence - and says that he is a reformed character. However, with no formal alibi, and CCTV footage of Darnell in the area at the time, Brooks & Devlin are convinced he is the murderer. They soon discover that Darnell would not have needed to force his way into her flat, as living in a similar building when he was younger, knew that downstairs, a tunnel linking two neighbouring properties would also him entry without detection. And the fact that the lock on the neighbouring property's door was broken seems to suggest that the door was Darnell's point of entry. He is formally arrested, however, his barrister, Ray Cole (Josef Altin), attempts to get him off the charge by claiming persecution in interview. With little physical evidence and only physchiatric reports to rely on, Steel must convince the jury of Darnell's involvement. Devlin and Brooks investigate the murder of three people, two workers and a customer, in a vintage clothes shop, who were found by an employee on returning from lunch, apparently killed with a sword or long knife. The medical evidence later indicates that the wepon was a bayonet. A fourth surviving victim soon points the detectives in the right direction - a man who was seen nearby just before the attack. He is eventually identified as John "Zero" Smith (Rupert Graves), an educated but homeless ex-military man, who is arrested with the weapon on him. Smith, who hasn't taken his medication for several months was previously charged with stalking a young woman but sloppy prosecution led to the case's collapse. It is also reavealed that Smith is a law graduate, who has several law degrees. Smith has a long history of mental illness and occasional violent behavior but as long as he remains on his medication, there's a high degree of normality about him. He soon decides to defend himself at his trial. He proves to be a formidable opponent against Steel, and trying to avoid both hospitalization and jail, argues that he is not a danger to society so long as he is medicated and claims that he was not himself that day and therefore not the killer, while Steel attempts to prove that Smith is likely to stop taking his medications yet again. Steel brings in Smith's sister, Patricia (Amanda Root), and uses Smith's paranoia to get his conviction.

Matt Devlin takes it badly when childhood friend and fellow police officer, Pete Garvey, is found dead of a gunshot wound in the park, the apparent murder quickly turns out to be a suicide. Garvey's widow says that he had recently been plagued by nightmares and was seeing Jonathan Nugent (Matthew Marsh), a former priest and pillar of the community but in reality an undetected paedophile, who had molested Garvey and others when they were boys. It becomes apparent that Garvey was suffering from Posttraumatic stress disorder after being reminded of the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of Nugent. The now-married Nugent and Devlin face off as CPS engages in a risky gambit and charges Nugent with manslaughter, for causing the PTSD, on the fact that Nugent's abuse so unbalanced Garvey that he killed himself as a result. The case becomes increasingly difficult, and Nugent claims that Garvey was blackmailing him, which tips the jury on his side. Steel must do a deal with the Catholic church if he is to get a conviction on Nugent. Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the James Porter case.

When prisoner officer Charlie Tyner is found shot dead on a council estate in Hackey, suspicion falls on Ellis Bevan (Ceyln Jones), who was hounded by Tyner is prison for being a child molestor. However, it is not long before Brooks & Devlin discover that Tyner was corrupt, and not only was dealing heroin to the prisoners in his care, he was taking advantage of their situation and raping them as well. Suspicion falls on prisoner Tamika Vincent (Wunmi Mosaku), who became pregnant at the hands of Tyner during one of his sordid sexual adventures. They soon discover that Tyner's drug dealer was Jackson Marshall (Robbie Gee), a career criminal who has evaded the justice system for too long, and that Marshall also has a conection with Tamika - she is serving a sentence for being a mule for Marshall and smuggling drugs into the country for him. With two motives to kill - the fact that Tyner owed him money, and that he raped his mule Tamika - James and Alesha find themselves at odds with George, who is keen to bring to justice the murdered of a prison officer. When it is discovered that Tamika ordered Marshall to kill Tyner after her months of abuse, the crown prosecution service believe they finally have the opportunity to bring Marshall to justice.

The police find a university student, Archie Rahman, stabbed to death in his flat, and a library book on Persian Pottery, taken out in the name of Becky Anderson (Charlene McKenna), is found in his flat, which becomes their only clue. Brooks and Devlin question Becky, who tells them her friend Sally Douglas (Kimberley Nixon) swapped library cards with her. The girls give each other alibis, claiming they were studying in the library at the time the young man was killed. Becky later admits she was lying for Sally, and the officers soon focus on several inconsistencies in Sally's story, until she finally admits that Archie, who she did not know, lured her to his flat where he drugged and raped her. The police and CPS are skeptical but when the media get hold of the story, the whole case takes on racial overtones with the press clearly taking Sally's view of the case. It's left to Steel and Phillips to sort just what is the truth, as they learn that Archie was once suspended from school for sexual misconduct, but evidence also points to Sally having known Archie for some time, rather than being the casual pick-up she claims. Under the heavy influence of her racist father (Andrew Dunn), personality throws doubt on Sally's innocence.

When medical nurse Stephanie Blake (Michelle Bonnard) is thrown down the stairs at her flat by a mystery assailant, evidence of a stalker named 'Giovanni' comes to light. It appears that for the past two years, the stalker has been sending Stephanie e-mails and telephone calls claiming to know every last detail about her. Lucas Dutton, a man whom she met a local bar, claims to know nothing about the stalking - but when he is revealed to be a bit of a dark horse, Brooks & Devlin suspect there is more to him than meets the eye. When Russell Lowry (Rocky Marshall), a concieted ladies man, is revealed to have contacted Stephanie through an animal charity that Stephanie worked for, suspicion falls on his involvement in the case. However, at the time the e-mails and phone calls started, Lowry was in prison for a GBH charge. When no physical evidence is found at the scene of Stephanie's fall, Brooks & Devlin suspect that Blake threw herself down the stars as a cry for help, as the police involved with her stalking claim failed to help her. In interview, Ronnie shows her a picture of Lowry and asks if he was the man who pushed her - and unable to remember, he believes she did throw herself down the stairs - but she claims that if she is not given help she will end up dead. Upon her release, she returns to her flat - but within hours is found dead, slashed across the neck. The only clue is a 999 phone call, made by Blake moments before her death, claiming 'it's him, it's him, the man from the photo', indicated that Lowry was her killer. Ronnie decides to review the evidence - and when the landlady of the building reveals she buzzed someone in around the time of Stephanie's fall, he believes that she was infact pushed by Lowry as well. When the case comes to court, James comes up against Evelyn Wyndham (Anna Chancellor). However, Ronnie's review of the evidence comes under scrutiny from Matt - and in order to secure a conviction against Lowry, James must discredit Matt's view.

However, the man is about to get married, and forced to interrupt his nuptials, they interrogate him for details, which unveil a disturbing link to a gangster with connections in the police force and judiciary. Senior Crown prosecutor Steel must convince a man whose wedding was ruined by the investigation to give evidence in public against a renowned thug, whilst holding his own against the obsessive compulsive genius defence barrister Jason Peters (Eddie Marsan).

Brooks and Devlin investigate the shooting of Rachel Callaghan (Juliet Stevenson), a well-known High Court judge, who is shot in the underground car park of her apartment building, in what looks like a carjacking gone wrong. They retrieve the car from a dupe who purchased it, and arrest the middleman in the sale. The middleman blames the crime on a man named Eddie. It becomes apparent that Eddie was hired to kill Callaghan, but his attempt went awry. The detectives believe that Callaghan's husband, Dan (John McArdle), was involved in the murder plot. However, Callaghan takes steps to defend her husband from prosecution, even when she is presented with evidence proving his guilt. Callaghan eventually has her medication withdrawn, prompting Steel to seek the court's permission to question her before she dies. When Callaghan tries to commit suicide, Steel seeks to have her declared mentally incompetent but Judge Mary Hall (Diana Quick) overules Steel's motion. George is torn between friendship and respecting a person’s right to die as he tries to get Rachel to accept the truth of what has happened.

Based on Joe's behaviour, Brooks believes him to be an ex-con who is hiding something. When Joe is arrested, he admits that his real name is Billy Wells and that his new identity was arranged by the Home Office because he is on a life licence for the murder of his teacher when he was eleven years old. When he recants the admission to being Billy Wells, attempts to verify his identity expose a conspiracy that involves high ranking government officials.

When a fire starts in a flat above a corner shop, a young mother is forced to leave her disabled 13-year-old son to die. However, it later becomes clear that the fire was caused by the young boy's mother, who, after believing he had died from an epeleptic seizure, decided to start the fire to kill herself. However, when her lawyer Dominic Peck (Oliver Dinsdale) appears to be bending the truth in an attempt to fool the jury, James and Alesha must deal with Peck, who is determined to win at all costs.

When an infant is found dead in his cot, it is suspected that the baby died of a cot death. However, when it is revealed that the baby died as a result of being shaken, Brooks and Devlin initially suspect the live-in nanny, especially after she admits to being the only person around the baby in the 24 hours preceding his death. Things begin to get compilicated, however, when it is discovered that other people were in the house that day. The live-in nanny's boyfriend soon falls under suspicion, as his rough attitude with his four-year-old nephew has come under suspicion from social services. However, it soon becomes clear that the nanny may have been having an off-day, and a quick reaction to a minor incident may have cause the fatal move.

When a series of murders are committed across London with the same motive, it is suspected that a serial killer from six years previous has returned to commit further crimes. Brooks and Devlin manage to track the man down, and it seems that he feels ready to confess to his wrongdoings. However, an alibi provided by his girlfriend seems to leave him in the clear, despite the fact there is no evidence to back it up either way. When it comes to court, however, Steel leaves out the defendants alibi and is accused of perverting the course of justice. Finding himself on the wrong side of the law, Steel battles for his career and his freedom.

They discover that the hospital department she was treated on has had three such untimely deaths within six months, and that her death may have been caused by a confliction between the drugs she was given and the medication she was taking at the time. Brooks and Devlin suspect Dr Grant, who was known to have treated her that evening. Things become complicated, however, when it is discovered that half of her medical notes have vanished, the report on the night in question has been doctored, and the suspect has bought a one-way ticket to Belgium. Brooks and Devlin catch up with their suspect, only to unravel a web of lies, involving a choropodist who has been posing a doctor, a treage nurse who has been paid to keep silent, and a well respected Doctor with a history of alcohol abuse has been secretly addicted to a drug called Codine for three years. Senior Crown Prosecutor Jake Thorne must decide which one to prosecute in order to get justice for Suzanne's death.

When Michaela Stark reports that her two year old son, Ryan, has been taken from a high-street merry go round, Brooks and Devlin suspect that her ex-boyfriend, who is also the child's father, may be responsible. However, upon examination of the CCTV footage, the pair discover that the child was never on the merry-go-round, and that the buggy Michaela was pushing at the time was empty. Suspicion then turns to Michaela's current partner, and when the boy is found dead in the airing cupboard at his flat, Brooks and Devlin believe they have their man. However, the mother reveals that infact she was the one who killed the boy - as he was suffering serious abuse at the hands of her partner. Thorne and Phillips must decide which guilty party to prosecute.

When escort Katya Cilka is found stabbed to death in her hotel room, Brooks and Devlin immediately suspect a case of blackmail, when £4,000 and a log of payments are found in the woman's bedside table. Suspicion falls on the hotel porter, who was conviniently out of the building at the time - but a secret relationship between a respected male practioner and the escort comes to light, and soon leads Thorne and Phillips to believe that the jealous wife of the practioner is prepared to frame her husband, as his meetings with the escort have lead to her son being born with cerebal palsy, caused by a case of Herpes which the husband contracted from the escort, and in turn gave to his wife.

The shooting of two innocent bystanders in a local nightclub proves to be the start of a terrible night for Brooks & Devlin. While dealing with the two deaths, a third man is shot - a local off-licence attendant - and the detectives realise that time is short if they are to catch the shooters before they strike again. When a fourth body is found - the owner of the nightclub - suspicions arise to the innocence of mental patient Eddie Wilson - and when the team finally catch up with Eddie, things take a terrible turn when he is shot to death at point blank range by his girlfriend. When the case comes to court, Thorne and Phillips must justify the fact that although Eddie is not here to serve time for the deaths, his girlfriend must take the rap for allowing him to kill four people.

When a housekeeper arrives to find her employees dead, Brooks and Devlin begin an investigation into the murder of David and Elaine Lerner, who had only moved into the house six months ago, and had been doing it up as their dream home for when they retired. When they struggle to find a motive for the killing, their line of investigation soon turns to the previous owners of the house, ex-husband and wife Camilla Mallon and Lucas Boyd. When CCTV footage puts Boyd in the area at the time of the killing, they discover that while drinking at a bar that night, Boyd discovered that his best friend, Josh, had been having an affair with Camilla during their marriage, which lead to their break up and sale of the house. Boyd, drunkely at the wheel of his car, crashed the vehicle while turning a corner, banging his head, and thus believing he still lived at his old house - and drunkingly returning home, believed he had found Camilla and Josh in bed together, thus stabbing them to death, not realising it was infact David & Elaine Lerner. Thorne and Phillips press for a murder charge, while faced with Jake’s old mentor Margaret Rumsfield (Jill Baker), who argues that the accused should face only manslaughter charges.

When mother-of-one Lia Brown is found shot in her bed, suspicion immediately falls on to her husband, who struggles with MS and has to take medicinal cannibis to help his condition. However, when it is discovered that the bullet was fired from over 100 metres away, Kaden Blake, the twelve-year old son of a known addict, comes into the firing line. He claims that he was told to kill his friend Chase Wade, and that when he first fired the gun, he missed Chase and the bullet flew through the air and into the flat of Lia, killing her. When it is discovered he was under the instructions of Mark Ellis, a long time criminal and well-known drug dealer, who the police have previously failed to bring to justice, Thorne and Phillips offer Blake a reduced sentence in order to bring Ellis to justice. It soon transpires that Blake's mother, who is addicted to crack, gave her son to Ellis in exchange for free drugs, and that Ellis had been torturing the boy and making him run illegal errands. When Ellis is brought to justice, Blake is escorted outside by Devlin, however, things take a sinister turn when Devlin spots one of Ellis' accompalices pointing a gun at Blake. Devlin shouts at Blake to move, and in turn, ends up being shot by Ellis' accompalice.
