List of Law & Order: UK episodes

Law & Order: UK is a British police procedural and legal television programme, adapted from the American series Law & Order. The programme is financed by the production companies Kudos Film and Television, Wolf Films, and Universal Media Studios. Head writer Chris Chibnall based the first two series of episodes on scripts and episodes of the parent series. Although Chibnall left the programme after the first thirteen episodes were complete, the practice of adapting episodes from the American series has continued through to series four. Law & Order: UK is based in London and stars Bradley Walsh, Jamie Bamber, Harriet Walter, Ben Daniels, Freema Agyeman, and Bill Paterson. The series was premiered worldwide on ITV1 on Thursday, February 23, 2009. As of November 27, 2010, a total of 26 episodes have been shown globally. The programme has been broadcast as two thirteen-episodes series worldwide, with the exception of the UK, which broadcasts each series in two parts: the first half comprising seven episodes and the second half comprising six episodes. This resulted in the second and fourth series being broadcast in foreign countries months before their British broadcast. The series was broadcast in America on October 3, 2010. On October 18, 2010, a third series of thirteen episodes was commissioned, which will be broadcast as series five and six in the UK. From the fifth series onwards, Ben Daniels and Bill Patterson have been replaced by Dominic Rowan and Peter Davison, introducting their characters of Jacob Thorne and Henry Sharpe.

An evacuation of a hospital after a bag is found leads to the call out of DS Ronnie Brooks and DS Matt Devlin to investigate the death of a dead nine-month old child who was found inside a sports bag in the parking lot of the hospital. The first obvious suspect is child's mother, Dionne Farrah (Venetia Campbell), but they learn that she had left the child at home by himself pending the arrival of the babysitter as she was concerned that she would be fired if she was late to work. The sitter was refused entry to the building and the boy was poisoned by carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty central heating system from the gas heater in his flat. A fellow tenant, Mike Turner (Tony Maudsley), had been bribed by the landlady, Maureen Walters (Lorraine Ashbourne), to harass the occupants into leaving so that she can renovate the building for more profitable developers as means for getting higher rent and he is charged with tampering with the heater as means of getting rid of tenants who refused to vacate their homes, and in the process killed the child. However, the case is declared a mistrial when it is claimed that the testimony of the building's French caretaker was wrongly translated. However, the trial gets back on track when the team finds that Mrs. Walters has also been bribing environmental health officers, and Steel persuades Turner to testify against her. Steel tries to prosecute Walters for gross neglegence and corruption of public officials.

Brooks and Devlin are emotionally affected by the case of an unidentifiable 13-year-old boy who was kicked to death at Euston Station. Their initial assumption is that he is a runaway but the autopsy reveals that he was well fed and in good health. DI Chandler holds a press conference which leads to identifying the victim as Danny Jackson who was in foster care as his mother, Mandy (Nicola Stephenson) is a former drug addict and currently in a rehab facility. She recently left her live-in boyfriend, Stevie Agnew (Neal Barry), who is already suspected of physical abuse towards the victim but he denies ever touching the child and claims not to have seen him since he left his mother. The trail leads to the arrest of another young boy, Jono Blake (Richard Wisker), who was also in care at the same house as Danny. Steel and Phillips face an "old flame" from Steel's past in defence barrister Beatrice McArdle (Dervla Kirwan), who attempts a bizarre and audacious line of defence of genetic predisposition towards violence: the suggestion that genes could be responsible for aggressive behaviour. This could upset the whole British legal system since other defendants could claim that genes means that they are not responsible for their actions.

The body of ex-vice squad officer, Frank McCallum, is found in the rear seat of his own car in Paddington. He was apparently killed after oral sex. They trace his movements to a young prostitute who has McCallum's wallet in her purse, but forensics eliminates her as a suspect. Though married to an adoring wife Frank had a roving eye and according to the victim's boss (Sean Pertwee), money from the paintballing firm for which he worked is unaccounted for. As they look into their ex-colleague's background, Brooks and Devlin trace McCallum's company credit card to a children's clothing store in Barnes run by two friends, Emma Sandbrook (Juliet Aubrey) and Kate Barton (Deborah Cornelius), only to discover that it is a front for a escort girl service and the two women are moonlighting as high-class prostitutes to pay for their sons' school fees. They charge the women with murder and determine a motive for one of them to have killed the man. Emma's unique and expensive lipstick is identified amongst the forensic evidence in the back of the car. Her "formidable defence barrister", Phyllis Gladstone (Lesley Manville), argues that McCallum was blackmailing Emma for free sex and attacked her when she tried to get out of the car. He subsequently tried to force her to have sex and she killed him in self-defense. Steel and Alesha are not convinced and prepare to do battle with Gladstone.

When a treasure hunter with a metal detector uncovers a nine-year-old skeleton in shallow grave aside the Thames mudflats, it forces Brooks and Devlin to reopen a contentious murder case when they identify the remains as those of David Ackroyd who disappeared in 1999. His supposed killer and business partner, Luke Slade (Iain Glen), was eventually convicted of murder although no corpse was found and an unreliable witness claimed that Slade told him he had slit his victims throat but the medical examiner finds that he was shot in the head. As a result, it would appear that Slade is the victim of a miscarriage of justice. Steel, however, is far from convinced and, when Slade represents himself in court, it becomes less about the trial and more about the vendetta between the two men. Slade soon files a writ to have his conviction overturned and the Crown prosecutors learn that Slade will represent himself at the appeal. Whilst in jail Slade has become skilled in the law and wins himself a re-trial, putting James Steel's career on the line in the process as was the original trial prosecutor as this was his first case with the Crown Prosecution Service. Steel and the police have to build an entirely new case against him and Steel soon finds himself before his own hearing alleging misconduct in his pursuit of Slade but fortunately for Steel, a visit to Slade's old cell-mate yields results. Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the Billionaire Boys Club case.

The remains of a small boy are uncovered in a wall by a construction crew and later identified as Tommy Keegan, who disappeared in 1983 at the age of eight, 25 years after he was reported missing. The boy had his skull crushed with a blunt object and his body was bricked into a wall. Brooks and Devlin meet with the retired policeman in charge of the original investigation and he was convinced that he knew the culprit, Edward Connor (Anthony Higgins) a neighbour and a suspected paedophile, who was arrested but the police couldn't get - or beat - a confession out of him so he was released for lack of evidence. They also meet, Julia Mortimer (Holly Aird), a childhood friend of Tommy, who used to play with him when they were she was younger. She tells the police that she had seen Tommy the day before he died but they notice an anomaly in her statement and ask her to undergo EMDR therapy, also known as regression hypnosis, to see if they can retrieve any additional memories as they believe that is subconsciously suppressing her memories of the events of the time. Julia names her estranged father Vernon (Keith Barron) not only as the killer but as a paedophile himself who molested her too. This leads to a history of sexual abuse and abuse of trust and it's left up to Steel to get the man to admit it on the witness stand but the court trial leads to angry exchanges between Julia and her father. However, Steel soon finds that his whole case rests on a very upset and potentially unreliable witness. Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the George Franklin case.

When an arson attack on a Turkish club claims kills 17 people, all undocumented illegal immigrants, Brooks and Devlin are under pressure to discover just who was behind it. Using CCTV, they manage to trace a suspect to a nearby hospital and what was first thought of as a racist attack soon turns out to be a lot more complicated. The perpetrator, Nazim Kazaba (Nabil Elouahabi), is caught as part of the device he used went off in the blast and something embedded in his leg but is refusing treatment, the situation is not helped when a suspect's human rights gets in the way of obtaining the crucial evidence. Steel's attempt to to force the man to undergo treatment is unsuccessful so the police just wait for the wound to fester and, with evidence finally in hand, charge him with murder. The defendent decides to cut a deal and his information leads them to Ediz Kilic (Ken Bones), one of the most prominent members of London's Turkish community who is also a people smuggler who Kazaba claims forced him to silence the clubbers, who were ready to expose his activities. The prosecutors struggle to build a case as a conflict emerges between justice, community relations and racial harmony. Steel jeopardises his friendship with a Turkish school mate, who resents being under suspicion, from his student days to get information to bring Kilic down. Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the Happy Land fire caused by Julio Gonzalez.

When Phillips' gynaecologist, Dr. Alec Merrick (Derek Riddell), touches her inappropriately during a routine medical examination, she files a complaint with the police and accuses the respected Doctor of sexual assault. Brooks, Devlin and Chandler struggle to find any firm evidence to investigate and the team becomes divided, but can't seem to find any former patients who may have made similar claims. They do however find that he did sleep with some patients, even if they won't accuse him of misconduct, making the conflicting reports from previous clients impossible to make an arrest. After learning that they have insufficient evidence to proceed, Phillips then resorts to desperate means to obtain justice only to make things worse for herself. Returning for a follow-up exam, Merrick drugs and rapes her, which she records on a spy camera. Steel is pitted against formidable defence barrister Phyllis Gladstone (Lesley Manville), who at trial claims entrapment. Merrick also claims that the sex was consensual and the apparent rape was in fact role-playing as agreed to by both of them. With no corroborating witness, and a secret which Alesha had not shared with anyone, will Steel manage to secure a conviction?

Young police constable Nick Bentley (Ashley Rolfe) is shot by drug dealers while on foot patrol, when he gets caught in a war between two dealers and is killed. His partner, PC Ray Griffin (Jamie Forman), says Nick shouldn't have been on his own but they got separated while on foot patrol. Brooks and Devlin think it's a tragic but pretty straightforward case and eventually locate a witness who identifies one of the parties to the drug transaction. They soon catch drug dealer Theo Carson (Ashley Chin). Carson shocks them and their boss, DI Natalie Chandler, when he tells them he saw another police constable standing in the shadows while the injured policeman was calling for help. Brooks and Devlin find an anomaly in Griffin's formal statement and they decide to investigate. Brooks and Devlin discover that Nick was gay and that Bentley's fellow constables had recently learned of his sexual orientation, also that Griffin is the head of a Christian group that doesn't accept homosexuals on the force. At the CPS, James Steel and Alesha Phillips think they can prove Griffin was duty-bound to help his dying partner. But their boss, George Castle, doesn't agree. He doesn't want to upset the working relationship they have with the police and thinks the force won't be with them. James and Alesha don't want to let Griffin off the hook, though and argue that Griffin had a duty of care and was obliged to help his dying partner.

When a 10 year-old girl is found dead in a builder's skip, Brooks and Devlin find themselves investigating her guitar teacher, after she failed to turn up to his lesson a week ago. At first, Devlin believes that the girl did arrive, and that the teacher is guilty - however, it soon becomes apparent that the taxi that dropped her off to her lesson did not take her all the way to the teacher's house due to roadworks - and that after she left the cab, she was followed by a man in a white van. Brooks and Devlin analyse the CCTV footage and attempt to trace the driver of the van, whom they later find - and charge with murder. Things look to be cleared up, as when the man reaches the dock, Steel is confident he can get a conviction. However, before the trial concludes, the mother of the dead girl stabs the defendant - and finds herself in the dock. Did she stab an innocent man? Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the Ellie Nesler case, with some aspects of British crimes including the faked kidnapping of Shannon Matthews and the murder of Sarah Payne.

When a homeless tramp with bipolar disorder is found beaten to death in the gardens of an East London estate, suspicion falls onto a man who's girlfriend the tramp had been following. The tramp claims he has no recollection of who attacked him - except that remembered seeing a dragon before he fell unconscious. It is soon discovered that the 'dragon' is infact a pattern on the dressing gown of the accused - and he is brought in and charged. However, he reveals there was more than one man there that night. Local resident Harry Morgan is soon found to be guilty of the crime, after the tramp assaulted and broke his wife Irene's arm. When the case reaches court, Morgan claims he acted in self-defence. Can Steel prove that the premeditated attack was the result of a personal vendetta or is it nothing more than a case of self defence gone wrong?

When a man is found lying on the ground with a kidney surgically removed, Brooks and Devlin have a case that they believed falls more into the category of urban myth than real-life crime. They quickly focus on finding the intended recipient of the stolen organ. Transplantation is highly controlled and centralized to prevent queue jumping but they soon find a recent transplantation that was completed from outside the system. They soon uncover a tale of a sick woman, a concerned parent and a greedy, disgruntled surgeon. For James Steel, the question becomes one of which of these to prosecute. When he makes his choice, he finds that his boss, George Castle, will defend the case. Can Steel secure a conviction against Castle?

When a teenage girl, Debbie Marsh, returns from a holiday with a group of her friends, it becomes apparent that she is acting in a different manner than she did before she left. As the friends prepare to return home, Debbie collapses, begins to cough up blood and starts to have a fit. By the time an ambulance arrives, Debbie is dead. It is indentified that she died from a ruptured condom, containing heroin, one of seventy of which she had swallowed while on holiday, attempting to smuggle the drugs into the country. Devlin and Brooks attempt to find the person who told her to smuggle the drugs - however, it soon becomes apparent that there is more to the case than meets the eye. When the case comes to court, Steel faces the tough decision over securing a prosecution, after the star witness decides to change his story in the witness box.

When an operation involving a police informant and a consignment of drugs goes wrong, resulting in the shooting of the informant, DS Jimmy Valentine (Robert Glenister) comes under suspicion. He claims that the informant pulled the gun on him, and that in a struggle to disarm him, the gun fired. Brooks, who was part of the operation with Valentine, seems sure that his old friend is telling the truth, and has no questions regarding. However, Devlin, who was watching from the background, doesn't seem so sure that the informant made the first move. Valentine is investigated, and it soon becomes apparent that the informant, Shahid Nafoor, was a drugs runner for Clyde Mason, whom Valentine had a secret deal with. Devlin discovers that Mason had ordered Valentine to shoot Nafoor, after he discovered that Nafoor had been giving the police information on him. He also discovers that Valentine's relationship with Mason began several years ago, after Mason offered Valentine a sum of money to get him off a drugs possession charge. Valentine did so by arranging someone to remove evidence from the evidence store, meaning Mason would walk free on a technicality. When the case gets to court, however, things become awry. Valentine twists his story, claiming that Brooks was only part of the operation for a specific reason - that he was the person who stole the drugs from the police evidence store. Can Steel get a conviction, and prove that Valentine is lying about Brooks?

Five-year-old Connor Reid is strangled and security cameras show the two little girls who baby-sit him, Paige and prostitute's daughter Rose, take him into the empty flat where his corpse was found. In interview Paige breaks down and names Rose as the killer though, in court, Rose's brief Kim Sharkey invites the court to accept Paige as the guilty party and forensics seem to implicate her as the murderess. Alesha finds evidence to nail Rose as the killer and the prosecution, pleading the girl's abusive upbringing as grounds for diminished responsibility, seek psychiatric care for her. However Sharkey, after professional glory, wants an all-or-nothing verdict. James puts Rose's vile mother in the witness box to prove the prosecution point and save Rose from a murder charge. Original episode and this adaptation both inspired by the Mary Bell case with some elements of the murder of James Bulger.

Convicted serial rapist Paul Darnell is released on parole and, three months later, young Ashanti Walker, who lives in the same area as Darnell, is killed after sex. He is the perfect parolee with a loyal girl-friend but he has no alibi and Steel is convinced he is the murderer. He is arrested but his barrister claims persecution and, at his trial, is credible and sympathetic whilst Steel does himself no favors with his bigotry and zeal, with obvious results. However, that is not the end of the matter. Original episode and this adaptation both inspired by the Megan Nicole Kanka case.

Devlin and Brooks investigate the murder of three people, two workers and a customer, in a vintage clothes shop, who were found by an employee on returning from lunch, apparently killed with a sword or long knife. The medical evidence later indicates that the wepon was a bayonet. There is a fourth, surviving, victim who helps the police in there investigation and the police soon focus there search on a street person who was seen nearby who is eventually identified as John "Zero" Smith (Rupert Graves) an educated but homeless ex-military man, who is arrested with the weapon on him. Smith who hasn't taken his medication for several months was previously charged with stalking a young woman but sloppy prosecution led to the case's collapse. It is also reavealed that Smith is a law graduate, who has several law degrees. Smith has a long history of mental illness and occasional violent behavior but as long as he remains on his medication, there's a high degree of normalcy about him and his medication decides he will defend himself at his trial. He proves to be a formidable opponent against Steel, and trying to avoid both hospitalization and jail, argues that he is not a danger to society so long as he is medicated and claims that he was not himself that day and therefore not the killer, while Steel attempts to prove that Smith is likely to stop taking his medications yet again. Steel brings in Smith's sister, Patricia (Amanda Root), and uses Smith's paranoia to get his conviction.

Matt Devlin takes it badly when childhood friend and fellow police officer, Pete Garvey, is found dead of a gunshot wound in the park, the apparent murder quickly turns out to be a suicide. Garvey's widow says that he had recently been plagued by nightmares and was seeing Jonathan Nugent (Matthew Marsh), a former priest and pillar of the community but in reality an undetected paedophile, who had molested Garvey and others when they were boys. It becomes apparent that Garvey was suffering from Posttraumatic stress disorder after being reminded of the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of Nugent. The now-married Nugent and Devlin face off as CPS engages in a risky gambit and charges Nugent with manslaughter for causing the PTSD on the fact that Nugent's abuse so unbalanced Garvey that he killed himself as a result. The case becomes increasingly difficult, and Nugent claims that Garvey was blackmailing him, which tips the jury on his side. Steel must do a deal with the Catholic church if he is to get a conviction on Nugent. Original episode and this adaptation inspired by the James Porter case.

Brooks and Devlin investigate the murder of Prison Officer Charlie Tyner who is found shot dead on a council estate in Hackney. It soon comes to light that, rather than being the good clean officer of Her Majesty’s Prison Service, Tyner is corrupt and taking advantage of his position in prison in a number of ways. There are plenty of prisoners inside with reason enough to want to kill Charlie but, being in prison, they have solid alibis so who killed Charlie and why? Crown Prosecutors James Steel and Alesha Phillips find themselves at odds with their boss, George Castle, who is keen to bring to justice the killer of a prison officer. James and Alesha can’t help but feel Tyner’s abuse should be brought into consideration when charging the accused. And they have their eye on a much greater prize - a career criminal connected to Tyner who has evaded the justice system for too long. Can James and Alesha convince the key witness to give evidence against a man she claims to love?

The police find a university student, Archie Rahman stabbed to death in his flat and a library book on Persian pottery, taken out in the name of Becky Anderson (Charlene McKenna), is found in his flat, which becomes their only clue. Brooks and Devlin question Becky, who tells them her friend Sally Douglas (Kimberley Nixon) swapped library cards and whilst the girls give each other alibis, saying they were studying in the library at the time the young man was killed. Then Becky later admits she was lying for Sally and the officers soon focus on several inconsistencies in Sally's story until she finally admits that Archie, who she did not know, lured her to his flat where he drugged and raped her. The police and CPS are skeptical but when the media get hold of the story, the whole case takes on racial overtones with the press clearly taking Sally's view of the case. It's left to Steel and Phillips to sort just what is the truth as they learn that Archie was once suspended from school for sexual misconduct but evidence also points to Sally having known Archie for some time, rather than being the casual pick-up she claims, whilst the heavy influence of her racist father (Andrew Dunn) is another factor which throws doubt on Sally's innocence.

Based on Joe's behaviour, Brooks believes him to be an ex-con who is hiding something. When Joe is arrested, he admits that his real name is Billy Wells and that his new identity was arranged by the Home Office because he is on a life licence for the murder of his teacher when he was eleven years old. When he recants the admission to being Billy Wells, attempts to verify his identity expose a conspiracy that involves high ranking government officials.

However, is she telling the truth, or his her lawyer, Dominic Peck (Oliver Dinsdale) bending the truth in an attempt to fool the jury? James and Alesha must deal with Peck, who is determined to win at all costs.

Things begin to get compilicated, however, when it is discovered that other people were in the house that day. Can Brooks and Devlin prove which one of the house-guests was to blame or is it case of no evidence, no crime?

However, an alibi provided by his girlfriend seems to leave him in the clear, despite the fact there is no evidence to back it up either way. When it comes to court, however, Steel leaves out the defendants alibi and is accused of perverting the course of justice. Finding himself on the wrong side of the law, Steel battles for his career and his freedom.

They discover that the hospital department she was treated on has had three such untimely deaths within six months, and that her death may have been caused by a confliction between the drugs she was given and the medication she was taking at the time. Brooks and Devlin suspect Dr Grant, who was known to have treated her that evening. Things become complicated, however, when it is discovered that half of her medical notes have vanished, the report on the night in question has been doctored, and the suspect has bought a one-way ticket to Belgium. Brooks and Devlin catch up with their suspect, only to unravel a web of lies, involving a choropodist who has been posing a doctor, a treage nurse who has been paid to keep silent, and a well respected Doctor with a history of alcohol abuse has been secretly addicted to a drug called Codine for three years. Senior Crown Prosecutor Jake Thorne must decide which one to prosecute in order to get justice for Suzanne's death.

However, upon examination of the CCTV footage, the pair discover that the child was never on the merry-go-round, and that the buggy Michaela was pushing at the time was empty. Suspicion then turns to Michaela's current partner, and when the boy is found dead in the airing cupboard at his flat, Brooks and Devlin believe they have their man. However, the mother reveals that infact she was the one who killed the boy - as he was suffering serious abuse at the hands of her partner. Thorne and Phillips must decide which guilty part to prosecute.

When a fourth body is found - the owner of the nightclub - suspicions arise to the innocence of mental patient Eddie Wilson - and when the team finally catch up with Eddie, things take a terrible turn when he is shot to death at point blank range by his girlfriend. When the case comes to court, Thorne and Phillips must justify the fact that although Eddie is not here to serve time for the deaths, his girlfriend must take the rap for allowing him to kill four people.

Soon, the case related to the evidence collapses, and the suspected dealer, Brian Langton, is released on bail, but is clear to point out that he will exact revenge on the police for falsely incriminating him. When Ronnie is later found badly beaten, Devlin vows to kill the man who did it.
