Lily Elise (born February 20, 1991 in Berkeley, California) is an R&B/Pop singer and a current contestant on the first season of NBC's The Voice[1] Elise is a founding member and contributing songwriter with The Beat Advocate, an active alternative R&B Hip Hop band at University of Southern California. She has worked in the music industry as a studio reference vocalist and a backup vocalist for various up-and-coming acts.
Background
A San Francisco, California Bay Area native, Elise currently lives in Los Angeles, California. In 2005, Lily joined the teen Youth in Arts a cappella group, 'Til Dawn, performing contemporary music to young audiences in an educational environment.[2] During her four years in the group, Elise competed in international competitions, won multiple awards and performed all over the Bay Area opening for groups such as Boyz II Men and The House Jacks.[3]
A former cheerleading captain at Sir Francis Drake High School in Marin County, California, Lily was also involved in the drama program where she choreographed numbers as well as performed in the shows. During her senior year she worked with the local educational foundation YES Theater as the Assistant Choreographer and Vocal Coach for middle and elementary school musical productions.[4]
In the summer of 2008, Lily attended Berklee College of Music’s intensive 5-week summer program where she was recognized as one of the top vocalists, placed in the top level R&B ensemble and selected to receive a generous scholarship to attend the college. In 2009, Lily was accepted into the inaugural Pop Music program at the USC Thornton School of Music. While there, she had the opportunity to sing backups for Steve Miller, work closely with Patrice Rushen and play for such songwriting legends as Lamont Dozier (of Motown songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland) and Randy Newman. Faculty also includes bassist Alphonso Johnson, Drummer Ndugu Chancler, songwriter Melissa Manchester and more. She was a sister of the Alpha Phi sorority.
