Hedwig (d.1249) was Duchess consort of Greater Poland by her marriage to Władysław Odonic, Piast duke of Greater Poland.

Life and descendants

Hedwig was married to Władysław Odonic between 1218-1220, when he escaped to Pomerania after trouble back in Poland. After he married Jadwiga and with the support of Jadwiga's brother, Swantopolk II, Duke of Pomerania, Władysław began the conquest of Greater Poland, which he completed in 1229. He was behind the murder of Leszek I the White and the wounding of Henry the Bearded at an assembly of Piast dukes at Gąsawa.

The couple had at least four children:

  1. Przemysł I of Greater Poland (5 June 1220-4 June 1257), successor of his father, married Elisabeth of Poland, daughter of Henry II the Pious and had issue
  2. Boleslaw the Pious (c.1212-14 April 1279) married Jolenta of Poland, had issue
  3. Salome of Greater Poland (1225-1271) married Konrad I, Duke of Silesia-Glogau, had issue
  4. Euphemia of Greater Poland (d. 15 February aft. 1281), married Władysław Opolski, had issue

Władysław died in 1239. Hedwig lived for another ten years before she died herself. Jadwgia is buried at Gniezno Cathedral in Poland.

Hedwig's granddaughter was Jadwiga of Greater Poland. She married Władysław I the Elbow-high and became Queen of Poland by her marriage. Her children included Kunigunde, Duchess of Swidnica, Casimir III of Poland and Elisabeth, Queen of Hungary. Jadwiga of Pomerania's elder son, Przemysł was father of Przemysł II, King of Poland

Ancestry

Different family backgrounds have been proposed for Jadwiga. Possible origins include:

If Pomerelian origin is assumed, she was of a daughter of Mestwin I, Duke of Pomerania[6] and Swinisław of Poland. In this case, her paternal grandparents would be Sobieslaw I, Duke of Pomerania and an unknown wife, and her maternal grandparents would be Mieszko III the Old and her Evdokia of Kiev. Evdokia was a daughter of Iziaslav II of Kiev and his wife Catherine of Kiev, Iziaslav was the son of Mstislav I of Kiev and his wife Christina Ingesdotter of Sweden, and Christina was a daughter of Inge I of Sweden and his wife Helena, Queen of Sweden.
