The clan takes its name from Rovca region in Montenegro. Nikša (Nikola) is the oldest known ancestor, he had a son, youngest Gojak, who founded the clan. Gojak in turn had a son, Bulat, whose descendants are known as Bulatovici.
In the early 17th century, Montenegro was under Turkish rule. The town had 50 houses of Montenegrin majority, 120 men in arms commanded by Ivan Radonjin.

Rovčani is a Serb Highland clan and town in Montenegro.
