- Spanish legislative elections take place three days after a series of bombings in Madrid kills 200 people. The Socialist Workers' Party, led by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, wins a plurality of seats. Zapatero vows to pull Spanish troops from Iraq.
- South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun is impeached by the National Assembly for violating election laws. His powers are assumed by Prime Minister Goh Kun until the Constitutional Court rules on the issue. Tens of thousands of demonstrators hold candle-lit vigils in eight cities to protest the impeachment.
