Jonas Lie (1880 - 1940) was a Norwegian-born American painter. He often depicted the sea, channels, and ships with dramatic perspective and powerful use of color. He became known for colorful impressionistic scenes of harbors & coves, painted during the many summers he spent on the coasts of New England & Canada. Lie had studied with artist Christian Skredsvig in his native Norway. In 1893, came to America to live with mother’s family in New York. When asked how to say his name, he told The Literary Digest "The correct pronunciation of my name is yonas lee. Although I have adopted the anglicized pronunciation of Jonas in this country, Lie, however, is pronounced lee in Scandinavia, and I have insisted upon it in English also." (Charles Earle Funk, What's the Name, Please?, Funk & Wagnalls, 1936.)
