level 1

Ribadier is the second husband of Angele, the widow of Mr. Robineau. In the wake of her first husband's deceits Angele has developped a jealousy that borders on paranoia and narrowly watches the activities of her second husband. Ribadier however possesses the gift of hypnotism and systematically profits from it by putting his wife to sleep at the time of his escapades - reawakening her on his return thanks to a trick he alone knows.

Until the day that is, that he tactlessly tells Aristide Thommereux, a friend of his and Robineaus, returned from several years away in Batavia. Ribadier doesn't know of the love Thommereux feels for Angele - the reason hes fled from it all, beyond the seas. While Ribadier is off on one of his escapades Thommereux wakes Angele to tell her again of his passion. It's at this moment that Ribadier returns, pursued by the husband of his mistress of the moment, Therese, the wife of a wine-merchant, Savinet....
