Westmill Wind Farm Cooperative is the first fully community-owned onshore wind farm, with five wind turbines erected in a straight line across the old airfield, near Watchfield, South Oxfordshire in the south of England. The wind farm provides enough ‘green’ electricity to power more than 2,500 homes and avoiding the release of 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. The cooperative was established in 2004 and more than 2,000 members, concerned with the effects of climate change, have bought shares in the scheme. In 2007, Westmill Wind Farm Cooperative was the recipient of a Schumacher Award.[1][2]
