Maoricrypta costata is a species of medium-sized sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Calyptraeidae.
Distribution
This species is endemic to New Zealand.
Habitat
This snail lives intertidally, attached to the underside of rocks and on mussel shells, to depths of about 45 m.
Shell description
The shell is moderately large, variable in shape as this depends upon the shape of the object to which it is attached. Sculpture consists of strong longitudinal ribs which form crenulations at the shell margin. There is a shelf taking up half of the large aperture. This shelf protects the viscera.
The shell coloration is whitish or pale brown with reddish-brown within the ribs - these darker lines are usually visible internally through the shell.
The shell height is up to 24 mm, width 43 mm, and length 62 mm.
