Dwight Yoakam and Patty Loveless both came same small town of Pikeville, Kentucky. This song is Loveless' first full-fledged recorded duet, but unfortuanately it did not get the kind of high praise that it should have for two of country music's 1992s hottest new acts. Both artists were still struggling to find their niche and to be able to sing the kind of songs that they both grew up on and enjoyed.

Yoakam and Loveless teamed to sing this duet in the summer of 1990, but the single wasn't released until 1992. The song is a true country classic with lots of fiddles and steel guitars and is reminiscent of songs from years past. It's release in August of 1992 came as a follow up to another one of Patty's singles, "Can't Stop Myself From Loving You", a song of similar style that was slipping off the charts after peaking at #20 a few weeks earlier. It charted from the low 60's, peaking at #47 before leaving the Billboard charts in mid-October.

"Send A Message To My Heart" - like "Can't Stop Myself From Loving You" - probably didn't receive the airplay it truly deserved because it was a bit too 'twangy' for the radio stations. During the summer, radio tends to cater to younger listeners who generally prefer uptempo songs over ballads. In addition, the record wasn't released by MCA or Sony, Patty's new record company at the timem, and it just didn't get much promotion from WEA/Warner, Yoakam 's label.

This was the last single released before Loveless had her throat surgery which altered her voice.

One trivia note is that the flip-side of the 45 record, is "Takes A Lot To Rock You" which was originally made for MTV. The video was too controversial for country outlets such as CMT or TNN.
