Michael Caplan QC (born 1952) is an English solicitor advocate.

Biography

Caplan read law at King's College London, before undertaking study at The College of Law in London. Articled at Lickfolds Wiley & Powles, he qualified as a solicitor in 1977 and joined Kingsley Napley in 1978, where he is now a partner. Caplan specialises in international criminal law and regulatory work. Taking silks in 2002, he is one of eight solicitors to have been made a QC.[1]

One of the first Solicitor Advocates in the United Kingdom in 2002, and the first solicitor from a criminal law background to be made a QC. Caplan was one of those who debated with the Government to ensure equal footing in court, by getting it agreed that solicitor advocates should wear the same wig and gown in court as barrister.[2]

Caplan has been an a supporter of a number of issues, as well as commentating on the proposed changes to the UK's Corporate manslaughter laws.[3] Caplan is also a regular contributor to The Times Legal supplement.[4] Caplan sits as a part-time Judge in the Crown Court, is a chairman of the police disciplinary appeal tribunal; and formerly was chairman of the Solicitor Advocates Association.[4]
